Question 1

1.1 A new section of interurban freeway (Class A road) must be designed for a 25-
year period. The freeway will be located in Gauteng. The design traffic is as per the
table below:

(a) Determine the design traffic class of the freeway. Perform sensitivity analysis
with growth rates from opening of 4%, 6% and 8%. Discuss your reason for
selecting the final traffic class. (12)

(b) Select, where possible, suitable flexible pavement structures (both granular
and cemented base structures) for this road section from the applicable TRH4
catalogue. (4)

(c) Select a possible suitable block paving option for this road (if any) and briefly
discuss whether you would consider construction of a block paving structure
for this road. (4)
