📝 Class 9 Science Test Paper (Chapters 1, 2 & 3) – CBSE Board

Maximum Marks: 70

Time: 3 Hours

General Instructions:

All questions are compulsory.

Marks are indicated against each question.

Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary.

Use logics and conceptual thinking for HOTS and value-based questions

Section A: Very Short Answer Questions (1×5 = 5 marks)

(Answer in one word or one sentence)

1. Name the state of matter that has no definite shape but definite
volume.
2. Which physical property is used in the process of separating cream
from milk by centrifugation?
3. Define Avogadro’s number.
4. What is the SI unit of temperature?
5. Give the chemical formula of calcium oxide.

Section B: Short Answer Questions – I (2×7 = 14 marks)

6. State two reasons why gases are compressible but solids are not.
7. Explain how a mixture of salt and ammonium chloride can be
separated.
8. Write any two differences between compound and mixture.
9. What are sol, suspension, and solution? Give one example of each.
10. A student adds 5.3 g of sodium carbonate to a solution of
ethanoic acid. How much carbon dioxide will be produced? (Use atomic
masses: Na = 23, C = 12, O = 16, H = 1)
11. Why does water at 100°C boil without any rise in temperature?
Explain in terms of energy.
12. Why do naphthalene balls disappear with time without leaving
any residue?

Section C: Short Answer Questions – II (3×7 = 21 marks)

13. (Logical Thinking): A perfume bottle is opened at one corner of

the room. Soon, the smell spreads throughout. Explain the
phenomenon.
14. (HOTS): Ice is kept at 0°C and water at 0°C. Which one has more
energy and why?
15. What is the mass of 5 moles of water? (H = 1, O = 16)
16. What is meant by the term ‘mole’? Calculate the number of
molecules in 36 g of water.
17. State the law of constant proportion. Explain with one example.
18. (HOTS): Suggest a method to separate a mixture of acetone and
water and justify your choice.
19. A sample of pure water when tested showed no conductivity.
Why?

Section D: Long Answer Questions (5×6 = 30 marks)

20. (HOTS + Logical Reasoning)

A student takes 2 substances: A is soluble in water, can be separated by

evaporation, and does not pass through filter paper.

B is volatile, passes through filter paper, and can be separated by

sublimation.

Identify A and B with justification. Explain the separation technique in detail.

21. Describe the characteristics of particles of matter. Support your

answer with activities or experiments.
22. Give five differences between a true solution, colloid, and
suspension with one example each. Draw a comparison table.
23. (a) Define atomicity.

(b) Write the molecular formula and atomicity of:

Phosphorus

Sulphur

Ozone

© Why do some elements exist in atomic form and others in molecular form?

24. (a) Define diffusion. How is it affected by temperature?

(b) Explain why the smell of hot food reaches us faster than cold food.

© How can this phenomenon be used in room fresheners?
