Construction Methodology: Plastering

Works
1. Scope of Work
This methodology covers the surface preparation, material application, and finishing
procedure for ½” thick cement plaster on perimeter exterior concrete or masonry walls,
and tool joint finish on retail shop partitions using cement plaster. Works include
scaffolding, surface conditioning, mixing, plastering, finishing, and curing.

2. Reference Standards
- ASTM C926 – Specification for Application of Portland Cement-Based Plaster
- ASTM C897 – Specification for Aggregate for Job-Mixed Portland Cement-Based Plaster
- NSCP – National Structural Code of the Philippines
- Approved Project Specifications and Architectural Finishes

3. Materials and Equipment

Materials:
- Portland cement (Type I or approved equivalent)
- Washed sand (fine aggregate, free of silt/clay)
- Clean potable water
- Bonding agent (for smooth concrete substrates)
- Premixed plaster (if specified)
- Waterproofing admixture (for exterior plaster)
- Tools for joint tooling (for shop partitions)

Tools and Equipment:

- Plastering trowels, floats, hawks
- Mortar mixer or mixing pan
- Measuring boxes or buckets
- Straightedges, darbies, screeds, spirit levels
- Tooling equipment (jointing tools, jointers, corner trowels)
- Scaffolds or movable platforms
- Brushes, sponges, and PPE

4. Work Sequence / Methodology

A. Surface Preparation
1. Clean the surface of dust, loose materials, oil, or grease.
2. Hack or roughen smooth concrete to ensure plaster adhesion.
3. Wet the surface thoroughly before plastering.
4. Apply bonding agent if required.
5. Check level and install guide screeds.

B. Mixing of Plaster
1. Cement:Sand ratio = 1:3 or 1:4 by volume.
2. Mix uniformly with clean water to achieve workable consistency.
3. Add waterproofing admixture for exterior walls.
4. Use within 1 hour of mixing.

C. Application Process
1. For Exterior Walls – ½” Cement Plaster:
- Apply in a single coat or two passes.
- Use straightedge for leveling.
- Float finish using wood or sponge float.
- Maintain architectural grooves and edges.
2. For Retail Shop Partitions – Tool Joint Finish:
- Apply plaster as above.
- Use jointing tools to form consistent tool joints.
- Clean joints for crisp edges.

D. Curing
1. Begin curing 24 hours after application.
2. Wet plaster 2–3 times daily for 5–7 days.
3. Protect from sun and wind.
4. Use burlap or poly sheet if needed.

5. Safety and Environmental Control

- Use PPE: gloves, eye protection, masks, and safety shoes.
- Provide stable scaffolding and platforms.
- Maintain clean and slip-free working areas.
- Dispose of excess mortar responsibly.

6. Quality Control
- Verify plaster thickness using gauges.
- Check verticality and flatness.
- Inspect for cracks or hollow areas.
- Ensure clean and aligned tool joints.
- Perform adhesion tests if required.
7. Manpower Requirements
- Site Engineer / Foreman
- Skilled Plasterers / Finishers
- Helpers / Laborers
- Safety Officer
- QA/QC Inspector

8. Duration and Productivity Estimates

- ½” Exterior Cement Plaster: 12–20 sqm per plasterer/day
- Tool Joint Finish (Retail Partitions): 10–15 sqm/day
- Varies depending on wall condition and weather
