Topic : Introduction
In the above example, we observe a pattern. We find that the succeeding terms are
obtained by adding a fixed number.
We have come across various number patterns in our earlier classes, the following
are few of them:
Sequence and Series
Sequence: A sequence is set of numbers or algebraic terms that follow a particular
pattern or rule to get from one term to the next.
Topic : Introduction
#Q. Find the 4 terms of the sequence defined by tn = n(n + 1)
Topic : Arithmetic
Progression
An arithmetic progression or arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers such
that the difference between the consecutive terms is constant. This constant
difference is known as common difference.
Let us denote the first term of an A.P. by a1 second terms by a2,….., nth term by an and
the common difference by d,
then the AP becomes a1, a2, a3, ……, an.
Here a2 – a1 = a3 – a2 = …... = an – an – 1 = d.
General form of an AP: a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d,...
It represents an arithmetic progression where 'a' is the first term and 'd' is the
common difference. This is known as the general form of an AP.
Note: Topic : Arithmetic
(1) Number Progression
of terms (n) in an A.P always belongs to set of natural numbers.
(2) Common difference (d) between terms can be zero, positive or negative.
☞ d = 0 ⇒ all terms of AP are same.
Eg. 3, 3, 3, 3, d = 0
☞ d = +ve ⇒ increasing AP
Eg. 6, 9, 12, 15, d = +3
☞ d = –ve ⇒ decreasing A.P.
Eg. 100, 70, 40, 10, d = -30
Finite andTopic : Arithmetic
Infinite A.P.:
Progression
(1) Finite A. P.
An arithmetic progression (A.P) in which number of terms are finite, is a finite A.P.
Eg: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14.
(2) Infinite A.P.
An arithmetic progression (A.P) in which number of terms are infinite is an
infinite A.P.
Eg: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,

Topic : nth Term of an Arithmetic Progression
Let a1, a2, a3, be the terms of an A.P whose first term is a1 or just a and the common
difference is d, then the second term, a2 = a + d
the third term, a3 = a2 + d
the fourth term, a4 = a3 + d
The nth term, an = a + (n - 1)d
Therefore, the nth term an of the A.P with first term 'a' and common difference 'd' is
given by an = a + (n - 1)d.
Note:
(1) an is known as the general term of an A.P.
(2) l represents the last term, it is denoted by l = a + (n - 1)d.

mth Term of an A.P from the End
We can find the mth term of an A.P from the end by taking the last term (if given) as
first term and negative of the common difference to construct the reverse A.P of the
given A.P.
Hence, mth term from end = last term + (m - 1) (-d) = l - (m - 1)d.
OR
If there is an A.P with n terms having 'a' as first term and 'd' as the common
difference, then mth term from the end is (n – m + 1)th term from beginning or (n -
(m -1))th term from beginning.

Let us suppose, A.P be a, a + d, a + 2d,.... a + (n - 1)d
Now, let S denote the sum of the first n terms of the A.P, therefore we have
S = a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) +.....+ [a + (n - 1) d]
Now, rewriting the above terms in reverse order, we get
S = [ a+(n - 1)d]+[a+(n - 2)d] + …. + (a + d) + a
