Q4 VTU Exam Solution 10 Marks Each

The document provides solutions to a VTU exam question, detailing recursive definitions for sequences and combinatorial problems. It outlines base and recursive cases for various sequences and calculates combinations for different scenarios involving attendance and distribution of fruits. The final result for the distribution problem shows a total of 90 ways to distribute the fruits among children.

VTU Exam Question Q.

4 Solution (Each 10 Marks)

Q.4 (a) Recursive definitions (10 Marks)

(i) a_n = 5n

Base case: a_1 = 5

Recursive case: a_n = a_{n-1} + 5

(ii) a_n = 3n + 7

Base case: a_1 = 10

Recursive case: a_n = a_{n-1} + 3

(iii) a_n = n^2

Base case: a_1 = 1

Recursive case: a_n = a_{n-1} + 2n - 1

(iv) a_n = 2 - (-1)^n

Base cases: a_1 = 3, a_2 = 1

Recursive case: a_n = 4 - a_{n-1}

Q.4 (b) Combinatorics (10 Marks)

(i) No restriction:

Ways = C(11, 5) = 462

(ii) 2 people must attend together:

Case 1 (Both attend): C(9, 3) = 84

Case 2 (None attend): C(9, 5) = 126

Total = 84 + 126 = 210

(iii) 2 people must not attend together:

Total = C(11, 5) = 462

Subtract both attend: C(9, 3) = 84

Total = 462 - 84 = 378

Q.4 (c) Distribution Problem (10 Marks)

Distribute 1 apple and 1 orange to each child:

Remaining apples = 4, oranges = 2

Ways to distribute 4 apples among 3: C(6,2) = 15

Ways to distribute 2 oranges among 3: C(4,2) = 6

Total ways = 15 × 6 = 90
