Passage No.

(14)
Smallpox was one of the most dangerous diseases in human history. It was caused by a
virus called the Variola virus, and it spread easily from person to person. The disease
caused high fever, body aches, and a rash that turned into painful blisters.

Smallpox was deadly. About 3 out of 10 people who got it died, and those who survived
were often left with scars. The disease spread quickly in crowded areas, especially before
people understood how viruses worked.

The turning point came in 1796, when a doctor named Edward Jenner developed the first
vaccine. He noticed that milkmaids who had a mild disease called cowpox did not get
smallpox. Jenner used this to create a new kind of protection — vaccination.

Over time, vaccination programs spread around the world. In 1980, the World Health
Organization (WHO) declared that smallpox had been completely eradicated — meaning
the disease no longer existed anywhere on Earth.

Today, smallpox is the only human disease to be fully wiped out thanks to science and
global cooperation. It stands as one of the greatest success stories in medical history.

Even though smallpox is gone, its story reminds us why vaccines are important. They can
save lives and prevent future outbreaks.
