LEARNING PLAN 1: SCIENTIFIC NOTATION AND MEASUREMENTS
INTRODUCTION
The concept of measurement had been with us since we were born. Some of us do not
appreciate how measurement benefit us in our lives. Have you ever wondered why you easily recover
from your sickness after taking a medicine? Can you imagine making a delicious coffee in just 1
teaspoon of hot water? What do you think is the reason why you look good in your clothes? When
can you say that you need to wear a sweater because the weather is cold? How can you determine that
you need to eat more fruits and vegetables and should lessen the intake of carbohydrates and sweets?
That is because of the help of measurement. With measurement, we are able to control our food
intake, proper amount of medicine and know our body measurements and the like.
In this learning plan, you will learn about the concept of measurement, how to convert one
unit to another and how measurement is important to you in your daily lives. There are drills and
exercises to be done to check your understanding and comprehension about the topic. Accomplishing
all formative and summative assessments is an expectation from you.
OBJECTIVES:
This learning plan is designed for you to:
1. express a number from scientific notation to standard form and vice versa;
2. know the brief history of measurement during ancient times;
3. convert measures of quantities by using units of lengths, capacity, weight,
perimeter/circumference and area of two-dimensional figures, surface area and volume of
three-dimensional figures and temperature;
4. solve problems by applying the concept of converting one unit to another; and
5. manifest patience and determination in finding for the answers of the problems.
LESSON PROPER/DISCUSSION
MIND-BOGGLING NUMBERS
The sun has a mass of about 2 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 kilograms. Can
you imagine how heavy that is? Suppose the average weight of an adult is 60 kilograms, would
all the total weight of people in the world approximately equal to the weight of the Sun?
The smallest calculator in the world was created in Switzerland. Its diameter is 0.0000012
meter. Can you imagine how small that is? It is to small for your naked eye to see.
We all know that measurements of physical quantities can vary from very small to very large. Such
numbers are very uninteresting to write, difficult to read and hard to compute. Thus, the concept of
multiplication will help you appreciate very small and very large numbers.
-It is a concise way of expressing
Scientific very large or very small numbers.
Notation
-It is also a number expressed in the
form 𝑐 𝑥 10𝑛 , where 𝑎 is a decimal
number between 1 and 10 and 𝑛 is an
integer.
There are different rules on how to convert a certain number into scientific notation and vice versa.
From Standard Form to Scientific Notation From Scientific Notation to Standard Form
Now, try this!
A. Write each number in scientific notation.
1. 1 375 000 = ___________________
2. 0.0023 = ___________________
3. 678 000 000 = ___________________
4. 0.00000314 = ___________________
5. 12 500 = ___________________
B. Write each number in standard form.
6. 4.26 𝑥 104 = ___________________
−7
7. 5.1 𝑥 10 = ___________________
8. 3.5 𝑥 1011 = ___________________
−5
9. 1.72 𝑥 10 = ___________________
5
10. 4.9 𝑥 10 = ___________________

Now that you have mastered scientific notation, let us dig deeper about measurement. Always
remember that we can use scientific notation in measuring physical quantities and vice versa.
Life without Measurement
Question: How far is your house to St. Paul University Philippines?
Can you answer this question without using a ruler, tape measure, meter stick or other standard
measuring device? How?
In ancient times, measurement is
chosen for convenience rather than
accuracy. Historical records indicate
that the first units of length were based
on people’s hand, feet and arms,
The hand, span, foot and cubit appear
in the early records of Babylonians and
Egyptians.
Our Filipino ancestors, on the other
hand, used dangkal, dipa, hakbang,
talampakan and dakot. Many of these
non-standardized units of measure have
become standardized.
In this module, we will discuss about the units used in measuring length, mass and volume,
circumference/perimeter, and area the different basic polygons and the surface area and volume of
some three-dimensional figures. Take note of the customary units and formula in each category
because you will be needing it in converting one unit to another and in solving real life problems.
METER is the metric unit in determining length.

VALUES INTEGRATION
You were able to learn about measurement and convert one unit to another. It is not difficult if
we follow the right value for each unit. There is a certain equivalent of a unit to fit to the other unit.
There are formulas to be applied to get the correct answer and as we solve the different problems, we
should never forget the do’s and don’ts in the steps. Just like as humans, our value is very precious.
There are people who will use us as an instrument to help others fit in to the world they wanted to be.
We can be of help to someone to convert him/her into a better individual. There are challenges along
the process but that should not be a hindrance to achieve success if you use the right formula to
success and to a happy life.
What was the best formula/conversion that you have done to have a life that you have right
now?
