Objectives
Identify why people settle in certain areas of Europe.
Understand the effects of industrialization on the environment.
Explore Europe’s cultural and religious diversity.
Learn about the role of the EU and public transportation in Europe.
REVELATION 7:9
"After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could
count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and
before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in
their hands."
This verse highlights the incredible diversity of people who, despite their different
backgrounds, cultures, and languages, are united in worship before God. It celebrates
the beauty of diversity within the unity of God's creation.
Introduction
In this short presentation we are
going to be talking about where
most of the population lives in
Western Europe, their lifestyles and
what an urban continent is like.
Key Terms:
Pollution
European union
What Is The European Union (EU)?
The European Union (EU) is a group of countries in
Europe that joined together to work on things like the
economy, laws, and peace. They share rules, a
common currency in some countries (the euro), and
allow easy travel and trade between them. It has 27
member nations and 23 official languages.
European cultural diversity
Europe is a region of many different
cultures, but for over 2,000 years
Christianity has been the dominant
religion. Since World War Il, people
from around the world moved to Europe
for jobs and education. They brought
different religions, languages, and
customs.
Where people live and work
People usually settle in low, sunny, and warm areas
near water.
Places with natural resources like water, minerals,
and fertile land attract more people.
Western Europe is highly industrialized, which has
led to air and water pollution.
Pollution causes problems like acid rain, which has
damaged historic buildings, forests, and lakes.
The Rhine River and Settlements in Europe
The Rhine River suffered severe industrial
pollution between 1950 and 1970.
In 1986, a chemical spill worsened the situation,
but today the river is cleaner and fish have
returned.
Coasts and rivers have facilitated transportation,
trade, and urban growth in Europe.
The Urban continent
Europe is known as the “urban
continent” because of its high
concentration of people in cities.
In the United Kingdom, almost 9 out
of 10 people live in urban areas.
To protect agricultural land and
forests, urban expansion is limited.
Therefore, cities are compact, and
most people live in apartments, not in
houses with gardens.
Transport in Europe
Europeans commonly use public
transportation for their daily activities.
Trains, subways, trolleys, and buses
efficiently connect neighborhoods and
cities.
European governments promote
public transportation by imposing
high taxes on gasoline.
As a result, gasoline in Europe costs
about twice as much as in the United
States.
Conclusions
1. People live in areas with good climate
and natural resources.
2. Industrialization has led to pollution
and acid rain.
3. Europe is culturally diverse due to
migration.
4. The EU promotes unity, trade, and easy
travel.
Section Assessment
Use each of the following terms in a
sentence: peninsula, loess, tundra, pollution.
Italy is a peninsula with fertile loess soil, but in the
cold tundra regions, pollution can still affect the
environment.
What is Eurasia?
Are the continents of Europe and Asia
considered as a whole.
How does geography affect settlement patterns?
Geography influences where people settle by
providing access to resources and livable conditions.
Why do some countries restrict urban growth?
Some countries limit urban growth to protect the
environment and maintain quality of life.
Why is there more farming in France than in Scandinavia?
France has more farming than Scandinavia due to
its milder climate, fertile soil, and flatter land.
