Respected members of the admissions committee,
I am writing to express my interest in being the PhD student for the project to create Mid-Infrared
Micro-Combs in CMOS-based platforms at École Centrale de Lyon. Using my current experience, I
plan to do research to develop chip-scale frequency combs or Micro-combs.
While earning my master’s in photonics at the Cochin University of Science and Technology, I became
interested in lasers, focusing on technologies and applications. As a research assistant with the ultrafast
nonlinear optics lab at Raman Research Institute, I aided in conducting experiments that used
spectroscopic methods to analyse laser-produced plasma, among other characterisation methods.
Working with the group has taught me how nonlinear optics is one of the pillars of the photonics
research community.
It was through a conversation with a colleague who works with optical clocks that I understood the
impact frequency combs have in various emerging research fields. I have seen a frequency comb
generated by a mode-locked laser. But I understand it’s limits because it is difficult to extend the
generated frequencies beyond 3 micro-meter. Also they are costly as only government labs can afford
them. I had read research on micro resonator frequency combs in materials exhibiting third order Kerr
nonlinearity. The possible advantages these have over femtosecond frequency comb so that it can
overcome the current limits made me very intrigued to pursue a career in this direction.

This position allows me to create low-noise micro-combs using SiGe and Ge platform nonlinear
resonators. It also allows me to understand the design perspectives of a chip scale device, which will
shape the future of modern research. I can take up the objectives of the position to completion as my
goals align with the research objectives of the PhD program. My background in photonics drives me
in the vision for a photonic chip-based frequency comb.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you need further information from me or wish to
plan an interview, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to joining the programme and
participating in the vision.
Respectfully,
Sebin Sebastian Xavier
