CHAPTER THREE
3.0 DATA COLLECTION
3.1 Methods of data collection

Observation
This was the main source on how I learned to perform activities within the organization from my
supervisor

Consultation

I frequently consulted with my supervisor on how to do assignments within the organization

Participation

I fully engaged myself in all the activities carried out by my supervisor and inquired for any
information where necessary

Research

I was able to research on different ways to help tackle any problem encountered by the
organization in different departments I was assigned to

Questionnaires

I used questionnaires to collect frequent routine data, and any other data for specialized studies.
While the information in this section applied to questionnaires for all these uses and some data
obtained concerned like demographic characteristics, fishing practices, opinion of stakeholders
on fisheries issues.

Interviews

Interviews were conducted face to face, they ranged from semi structured to unstructured
depending on the information being sought.

Surveys

Surveys were a good way of gathering large amount of data since the provided a broad
prospective.

Surveys can be administered electronically through mobile phones, emails. Mails and
electronically administered surveys have a wide reach and are relatively cheap to administer
information in a standardized and private manner. Hence the surveys used were tested and
designed for validity and reliability with the target groups who were to complete the surveys

6
As surveys were self reported by participants. There was possibility that response could have
been biased particularly if the issues involved were sensitive or required some measure of
disclosure on trust by the participant.

Documentation

The use of documentation provided an on going record of activities, which included information
feedbacks and reflection through journals, diaries and progress reports. The challenge of
documentation was that it required an ongoing commitment to regularly document thoughts and
activities throughout the evaluation process.

7
CHAPTER FOUR

transportation being difficult.
 Daily expenditure since I had to travel to the work station and back home daily.
 Too much work load and long working hours

moving up and down

4.2 Strength
i) It helps to boost ones public speaking skills.
ii) It helps to make new friends
iii) It teaches one to be creative in good report making from farmers and other office.
iv) It teaches one to be self reliant
v) It helps one to relate what learned in class and applied it practical’s in real life.
vi) It helps one to be familiar with the office duties.

4.3 Weaknesses
i) Poor log book system that makes achieving cleanliness a big challenge
ii) One can get a chance in a far place becomes a limiting factor thus making the attachment
period very difficult.
iii) The student should be given adequate time for writing report
iv) Not every student is personally notified of the assessment date which hinders preparation
and confidence.

8

comparison.
