I picked this article because I have been embarking on a hair journey after shaving all my

hair off. We recently talked about this in class and it poked my curiosity. We talked about hard
keratin and these were things I did not think of when talking about my hair. The article basically
talks about hair loss and how it comes to be. Although it does reassure people that hair loss
happens, it happens to everyone just at different times. Unfortunately, hair loss can come
prematurely an is devastating to young people because appearance is an important factor in our
lives. The human body grows hair follicles pretty much everywhere. The only places we do not
grow hair is on our palms, bottom of our feet and our eyes. Hair follicles are made up of a
protein called keratin. Our hair is linked by to our scalps by follicles that are rooted in these
things called bulb. The follicles supply the hair with nutrients to grow and coats it with a oily
substance called sebum. Although the is hair all over our bodies, most of it doesn’t grow too
long. For instance, the hairs that are on your arm. For some, it makes it hard to where long
sleeves but for the rest its barely noticeable. Hair and the ones on our head in particular take
three years to grow to grow to its full length. The hair goes through a cycle of growth; rest and
shedding. The hair grows to its full length, stays stagnant then sheds. With male’s hair growth
slows down faster. Their hair follicles tend to stay in the resting phase longer and the hair
follicles tend to grow shorter. Since we lose about 200 hair follicles a day, it makes it harder for
men’s hair growth to keep up with the hair loss. The hair on a male head staying in that resting
phase and losing hair at a fast rate leads to male pattern baldness. Also called androgenetic
alopecia it starts at the crown of the head and on the sides. Most people including me usually
thinks there is things we can do to prevent it but, hair loss is definitely going to happen.
However, each case is different some might experience great hair loss while others keep a full
head of hair. Hair loss occur due to hormones and genetics. Other factors include medication and
medical treatment like radiation for cancer. Hair manipulation also contributes for hair loss. As
an African American woman, we tend to do protective hair styles like braid and weaves because
of this. If we have our hair out, we tend to keep the same hair style of at least three days, so we
do not have to manipulate our hair too much. There is no permanent way to stop hair loss but
there are ways to slow the process down. Taking vitamins and using hair creams are popular in
helping block the androgen hormone to stop hair loss. Doctor like to recommend hair creams like
minoxidil to help even though they do come with side effects. For the people who ae in a
permanent state of hair loss hair plugs or a complete hair transplant is their best bet.
