Key Verse: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” – John 1:49 ESV

• The Son of God Revealed

- The first chapter contains a variety of expressions concerning Jesus’ identity;

And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” – John 1:34 ESV

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as
he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” – John 1:35-36 ESV

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah”
(which means Christ). – John 1:41 ESV

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the
Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” – John 1:45
ESV

Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
– John 1:49 ESV

o John has recorded a wide range of descriptions for Jesus:

§ The Messiah – 41
§ Home of whom Moses and the prophets wrote – vs 41
§ The King of Israel – vs 49

- Chapter 1 is all about establishing Jesus’ identity

o Through the eye-witness account of John
o Through the testimony of John the Baptist
o Through the statements of the disciples
o But there is a sense of confusion to it all
§ Is Jesus a prophet?
§ Is He a King?
§ Is He the Messiah?
§ Or is He simply the Rabbi from Nazareth?
- Chapter 2 begins John’s proof of Jesus’ identity

• The Revelation of God

No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s
heart. He has revealed God to us. – John 1:18 NLT

- The Wedding in Cana – 2:1-12

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And
Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet
come.” – John 2:3-4 ESV

o “My time has not yet come!”

o “This is neither the time nor the place!”
o Jesus referred to “the hour” repeatedly

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to
depart out of this world to the Father. – John 13:1 ESV

o Jesus never lost sight of His assignment

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said,
“Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you. – John
17:1 ESV

o The shadow of the cross

§ The cross looms large in Jesus’ life
§ It is the focal point of John’s gospel
§ It is the sole reason for the incarnation
§ Every other event is subordinate to the cross

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his
disciples believed in him. – John 2:11 ESV

o The glory of God

glory – doxa – magnificence, excellence, majesty

§ Jesus did the impossible

§ He turned ordinary water into extraordinary wine
§ But this was nothing for the Creator-God

…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory
as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14 ESV

The miracle in Cana would be the first of many He would perform in order to
display His glory – the glory of the Son of God – the Word of God made flesh,
who came to bring light and life to those mired in darkness and marked by
death. Something new was happening. The Messiah had come. And the next
three years were going to be filled with further evidence of His glory. – Ken
Miller, Devotionary™

o His disciples believed

§ A fairly generic term in John’s gospel
§ The faith of the disciples is a work in process
§ Reading the Gospel of John this side of the cross is like having a secret decoder
ring
§ We get things that the disciples do not

- The Temple of God – 2:13-22

o This will be one of many trips Jesus makes to Jerusalem
o It will set up a continuing contrast between Jesus and the Temple

…Jesus went up to Jerusalem…In the temple he found… – John 2:14 ESV

And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple… – John 2:14 ESV

o Jesus finds God’s house in a sorry state of affairs

o And He “cleans house“

So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
– John 2:18 ESV

§ Who gives you the authority to do these things?

§ What right do you have to do the things you do?
§ Who do you think you are?

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
– John 2:19 ESV

§ Jesus compare His body to the temple of God

§ He was placing equal, if not greater significance on His body

For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. – Colossians 2:9 NLT

o Many believed in His name

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the
Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” – John 1:45
ESV

§ They believed Him to be Jesus Christ (the Messiah)

§ Jesus = “Jehovah is salvation”
§ They were hoping He was the savior for whom they had been waiting

o But Jesus knew the truth

But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. No one needed to tell
him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart. – John 2:24-
25 NLT

§ They had an incomplete concept of the Messiah

They were expecting a warrior-king
He would wage ware against the Romans
He would bring peace and prosperity to Israel
He would restore God’s people to prominence
But Jesus was out to reveal His real mission

• FOR FURTHER THOUGHT

What are some ways in which modern-day Christians exhibit an incomplete understanding
of who Jesus is? What are some false expectations we have of Him?

John is going to regularly place Jesus in the vicinity of the temple. What similarities and
differences do you see between the role of the temple and that of Jesus? In what ways does
He replace the temple?

Since Jesus is no longer on earth, how does He choose to reveal His glory today? (See 2
Thess. 1:11-12)
