C. READING
1. Read the passage and choose the best answer(A, B, C or D) to each of the following
questions. Teenage relationships
Romantic relationships are a major developmental milestone. They come with all the other
changes going on during adolescence - physical, social and emotional. And they're linked to a teenager's
growing interest in body image and looks, independence and privacy.
Romantic relationships can bring lots of emotional ups and downs for a teenager- and sometimes
for the whole family. The idea that the teenager might have these kinds of feelings can sometimes be a bit
confronting for his or her parents. But these feelings are leading your child towards a deeper capacity to
care, share and develop intimate relationships.
There isn't a ‘right age’ to start having relationships - every child is different. But here are some
averages of when teenage relationships start. From 9-11 years, your child might start to show more
independence from the family and more interest in friends. From 10-14 years, your child might want to
spend more time in mixed gender groups, which might eventually end up in a romantic relationship.
From 15-19 years, romantic relationships can become central to social life. Friendships might become
deeper and more stable.
Many teenagers spend a lot of time thinking and talking about being in a relationship. In these
years, teenage relationships might last only a few weeks or months. It's also normal for children to have
no interest in romantic relationships until their late teens. Some choose to focus on schoolwork, sport, or
other interests.
Before starting having relationships, a teenager might have one or more first crushes. An identity
crush is when a teenager finds someone he or she admires and wants to be like. A romantic crush is the
beginning of romantic feelings. It is about a teenager imagining another person as perfect or ideal, which
can tell a lot about what he or she finds attractive in people. Romantic crushes tend not to last very long
because ideas of perfection often break down when he or she gets to know the other person better. These
intense feelings are real, so it's best to take crushes seriously and not make fun of them.

finding a romantic partner. That is, online dating sites use the conceptual framework of a "marketplace
metaphor" to help people find potential matches. (8) ………………. that make it easy to quickly browse
and select profiles in a manner similar to how one might browse an online store. Under this metaphor,

Dear Amy,
I want to share my problem with you. I've been in the same music band for almost 9 years now. My
friends there are like my family and I love the director and her style of teaching. However, my
family are probably going to move to another city soon. Then, I will most likely have to leave the
band and my friends, which will break my heart. I have been looking up bands in the new city, but
I'm scared that I won't be satisfied with the music and that I won't have as many close friends as I
did in my old band. I feel like I'm going to lose a part of myself if/when I leave. Please advise me
on how I can cope with this.

I am a 17 year old male and I have three older brothers. I love my brothers but I don't like any of
them. I'd like to let them know how I feel but I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. My mom would
like us to spend more time together but tensions might not be eased. I know that it is important for
families to be close but I am not sure if I can bring myself to develop a brotherly relationship with
them. Do you have any suggestions?

Sample letter to Mya (1)
Dear Mya,
Your parents sound unfair if they are basing their view of your boyfriend only on the way he
dresses. On the other hand, perhaps there may be another reason for their dislike of him. If his appearance
is really why they don’t like him, you have a couple of possible actions to take. Since you’ve already tried
changing their minds, you might ask another relative, perhaps an aunt or grandparent, to help. Another
possibility would be to have an honest conversation with this guy, explaining that your parents dislike
him because of the way he dresses. So you’d like him to dress more to your parents’ liking to show them
his positive qualities. Along with those two actions, continue to persuade your parents to change their
minds. Ask them how they would feel being rejected because of the way they look. All the best,
Amy
Sample letter to Worried Band Person (2)
Hello Worried Band Person,
I can absolutely understand how upset it is to leave behind the band that has been a central part of
your life for nine years. Here are some suggestions to keep your memory with the special band while
trying to develop a new relationship.
One thing you can do before you leave is to record some sessions of the band practicing, and also
record a performance. It will be a treasure to have those, and you can listen to them and recapture the
feelings when you sang as part of that group.
It is good for you to have looked up possible bands you might join in the new city you are moving
to. You should definitely try out a few options to find the band that best matches your taste of music and
personality. A year from now, once you have selected a new band and become an involved participant,
you will probably feel the start of new friendships developing and will be experiencing new musical
adventures.
Keep in mind that with Face Time and Skype, you can see and talk with your old band members,
and you might be able to visit them in-person periodically.
Best regards,
Amy
Sample advice to Blake
Dear Blake,
It sounds like you do have a relationship with your siblings, but it’s not a close one. You say it’s
important to have a close family relationship. Do you want one? And do they? Competition is very
common among brothers, and sometimes that's hard to deal with. Keep in mind that all relationships take
effort and relationships with brothers develop depending on where everyone is in their lives. Do the four
of you have any common interests? That would be a starting point for an activity or simply a discussion.
Another idea is a family hike, which can be a way to have fun and family connection. All of you could
also go have dinner in a restaurant or an exciting place. It is true that even when siblings don’t particularly
like each other, they typically will support each other when they’re needed. Since you love your brothers,
it’s worth making extra efforts to find ways to connect, at least occasionally.
Cheers,
Amy

C. READING
1. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the following
questions.
Raising Independent Children
Independence is not something that children can gain on their own. They have neither the
perspective, experience, nor skills to develop independence separately from their parents. Rather, it is a
gift that parents give their children that they will adore and benefit from their entire lives. Teach
Responsibility
One of the parents' important tasks is to teach their children about responsibility. The best way to
ensure that parents and children know what responsibilities are appropriate for the children. Make a list
with your children of what the responsibilities should be. Next, identify other individuals who will also
have responsibilities (and what they are) in the children's achievement activities, such as teachers,
instructors, or coaches. There should also be consequences for not fulfilling responsibilities.
Demand Accountability
The ability of children to hold themselves accountable for their actions is a critical part of becoming
independent. However, many parts of Asian culture send a message to children that nothing is their fault.
Whether rationalizing bad behaviour, blaming for misfortune, or faulting others for their failures, children
are constantly told that they do not need to be responsible for their actions. The reluctance of children to
take responsibility for their actions is based on their desire to protect themselves from failure. Children
can't take responsibility for their achievements and successes unless they are willing to take responsibility
for their mistakes and failures.
Encourage Exploration
Early in children's lives, parents need to teach their children that they have a safe place to return to
if they venture too far and that their parents are there to protect them when needed. There is, however, a
fine line between security and dependence. When children have established their sense of security,
parents must then encourage them to explore the world beyond the safety net that parents provide. This
"push out of the nest" allows their children to test their own capabilities in the "real world" and to find a
sense of competence, security, and independence within themselves.

‘Tiger moms’ vs.Western-style mothers?
In four separate studies involving 342 students from a Northern California high school, two
Stanford researchers examined "underlying models of self and sources of parental motivation and
pressure. The students were asked for open-ended descriptions of their mothers- (l) ________. They also
answered questions about how connected they felt with their moms as well as how much pressure they

For example, they asked students to directly rate how much pressure they experience from their
mothers. Then, the researchers asked participants to rate how much they feel supported by their mothers
(2) ________ . And they examined the correlation between students' perception of maternal pressure and

mothers positively (5) ________ .In the Asian American family model, children learn the value of being

Teenagers are confronted with a variety of tough issues, and learning how to deal with them can test
their confidence. Tough issues range from dealing with changes to their physical appearance to being
accepted in friendship groups. This is then reflected in how they behave in public, how well they perform
in school and other areas of their life, and family expectations.
Self-confidence is the belief that they'll be successful in a particular situation or at a specific task.
Self-confidence can vary throughout life, particularly during major life changes such as adolescence. It's
estimated that up to half of adolescents will struggle with low confidence levels during the early teenage
years. Self-confidence helps teenagers make safe, informed decisions. Confident teenagers can avoid
people and situations that aren't necessarily right for them, and to find those that are.
There are signs to tell if a teenager is self-confident. These include good posture, a relaxed walk,
alert eyes, an ease at both giving and receiving praise, openness to criticism and feedback, a curiosity
about new ideas and a refusal to get upset when things go differently than planned.
The signs to indicate that a teenager is lacking confidence include an awkwardness accepting praise,
and unconfident body language, such as walking with his head down and reluctance to make eye contact.
A less confident teenager is also likely to have negativity about others and avoidance of social situations,
to refuse joining on activities, to be shy or timid, or to expect that they will fail at things they try, or to not
try as hard when things get tricky.
Parents can play an important role in building their child's self-confidence. They can give him or
her opportunities to fail and succeed in a safe environment. Often, poor self-confidence comes from
running up against hardship and not understanding how to recover from it.

- Imagine that you are a parent of a teenage child and registered as a member of a forum for parents
of teenagers, named Reach Out. Every week, you read posts from other parents of teenagers sharing their
children's problems. The following is the post from one parent, named Sarah, sharing the problems of her
teenage son and asking for advice to improve his confidence level.
“My son is 17 years old and is struggling with confidence. He has always been quiet and shy. I had
expected that he would get more confident when he gets older, but not the case. At home, he is very funny
and never shy around anyone he knows, but when outside the home and family he switches and seems to
be unable to communicate and make friends. He has never suffered from bullying of any kind at school,
but it seems that he's not heading out with friends. I've seen him on his own at break time and he told me
that his friends had just gone. He's a full time student at college and I've asked his tutor if he had any
problems in studying. The tutor said there weren't any problems to himself despite that he was quiet and
shy in tutorial classes. My son has tried to apply for a part-time job, but he fails to get one just because he
was too quiet in his interviews”- Sarah

A. where B. that C. which D. why Read the passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each
of the questions. As the parent of three boys (high school, middle school and pre-school), I can say
without reservation that I love them equally. Each can be a pain in his own special way, and each is very
different from the other. So my relationships with each of them are different, but they all receive love,
support and direction.
Our two oldest will occasionally complain that we are treating them differently, and we always say
that we are: different time, different place and different child. And then we ask if they feel we are treating
them unfairly.
If the answer to that is yes, then we talk about it.
We make no claims to perfection and are willing to admit mistakes to our kids. This is more
important as they get older, but it's important when they're young, too. It is also true that each parent has a
different relationship with each child, and it takes communication to make sure that there's no resentment
between parents as well. Families thrive on communication, even when it's loud.

Read the passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the questions. Dating and
experience with romance are relatively common - but far from universal - among teens aged 13 to 17.
Some 35% of teens have some type of experience in a romantic relationship, a figure that includes current
and former daters, as well as those in serious and less-serious relationships. The survey asked about three
different categories of romantic relationships and found:
▪ 4% of teens are currently in a relationship they consider to be serious with a boyfriend, girlfriend,
or significant other.
▪ 5% of teens are in a current romantic relationship, but do not consider it to be serious. ▪ 16% of
teens are not currently dating, but have had some sort of romantic relationship (whether serious or
otherwise) in the past.
Some 64% of teens indicate that they have never been in a romantic relationship of any kind (and
1% declined to provide their relationship status). The 35% of teens who say they are either currently
involved with a romantic partner or have ever dated, hooked up with or had a romantic relationship with
someone will serve as the focus of the remainder of this report. When we refer to “teen daters,” “teens
with relationship experience” or “teens with dating experience”, we are referring to this roughly one-third
of teenagers who are currently in some type of relationship or have been at some point in the past.
Age is the primary demographic dividing line when it comes to dating and romance. Teens aged 15
to 17 are around twice as likely as those aged 13 to 14 to have ever had some type of romantic
relationship experience (44% vs. 20%). These older teens also are significantly more likely to say they are
currently in an active relationship, serious or otherwise (18% vs. 6% of younger teens). (Text adapted

questions. Four great reasons for high school students to volunteer
Volunteer work presents a great opportunity for teenagers to prepare for the future, as well as to
improve their communities. In addition to boosting socializing skills and awareness of local organizations
and social issues, high school students who volunteer often may have an advantage over their peers when
headed off to college.
Gaining New Skills
With each new volunteer activity, students gain new skills. The skills seem to be basic or trivial at
the time of training, but may provide fundamental grounds for future success. For example, by managing
the receipt, sorting and distributing the donations from community, school students might learn how to
use spread-sheets to keep track of inventory. These skills are a great foundation for a job in management,
accounting, or running a small business.
Giving Time
One of the most charitable acts anyone can do is donate their time and talents. Students who are
busy with after-school sports or work to help support their families and still make time to volunteer on
evenings or weekends show their outstanding character and resolve to make a difference. High school
students may help to mentor younger ones or to assist with one-time special events held on weekends.
Showing Responsibility
Just like going to a job, committing to a volunteer position shows a student's responsibility. High
school students should get involved in volunteer programs relating to their hobbies in order to naturally
build responsibility. For example, those who love to read can find volunteer opportunities with a local
library and those who enjoy sports can coach athletics at an after-school program for children.
Adding to the Resume
If a high school student's pre-college resume is limited to summer employment at a local restaurant
or a cafe, it might be time to add a few lines. Commitment to community volunteer work over a long
time shows that a student is willing to work for something without monetary compensation, including a
college internship or apprenticeship, which may be a requirement of college programs. (Text adapted from

MBE, 47, Essex I do feel ashamed when people marvel at me, saying I must

1. Read the passage and choose the correct answer(A, B, C or D) to each of the following questions.
Free trade initiatives in ASEAN are led by the implementation of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement
(ATIGA) and the Agreement on Customs. These agreements are supported by work done by several
sector bodies to plan and to execute free trade measures, guided by the provisions and the requirements of
ATIGA and the Agreement on Customs. The progress being made by these sector bodies forms the
backbone for achieving the targets of the AEC Blueprint and establishing the ASEAN Economic
Community by the end of 2015.
The year 2007 was the 40th anniversary of ASEAN’s formation. It also marked 30 years of
diplomatic relations with the USA. On 26 August 2007, ASEAN stated that it aims to complete all of its
free trade agreements with China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and New Zealand by 2013. This is
in line with the start of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. In November, 2007, ASEAN
members signed the ASEAN Charter, a constitution governing relations among ASEAN members and
establishing ASEAN itself as an international legal entity. During the same year, the Cebu Declaration on
East Asian Energy Security was signed (15 January, 2007) by ASEAN and the other members of the EAS
(Australia, The People's Republic of China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea), which pursues
energy security by finding energy alternatives to conventional fuels.
On 27 February, 2009, a free trade agreement (FTA) with the ASEAN regional bloc of ten countries
and Australia, and its close partner New Zealand was signed. It is believed that this FTA would boost
combined GDP across the twelve countries by more than US$48 billion over the period between 2000 and
2020. ASEAN members, together with the group's six major trading partners (Australia, China, India,
Japan, New Zealand, South Korea), began the first round of negotiations on 26-28 February, 2013, in
Bali, Indonesia, on the establishment of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

country of northeast-central mainland Southeast Asia. It extends about 650 miles (1,050 km) from
northwest to southeast. The capital is Vientiane (Lao: Viangchan), located on the Mekong River in the
northern portion of the country.
The geologically diverse landscape of Laos, with its forested mountains, upland plateaus and
lowland plains, supports an equally diverse population that is united largely through agriculture,
particularly the cultivation of rice. Interactions - sometimes hostile, sometimes hospitable - with the
neighbouring Khmer (Cambodian), Siamese (Thai), and Myanmar (Burmese) kingdoms between the 5th
and the mid-19th century - indirectly imbued Laos with elements of Indian culture, including Buddhism,
the religion now practiced by most of the population. Both Buddhist and Hindu lores have shaped the
visual, performing, and literary arts of the country. Many of the indigenous and minority peoples of the
remote highland slopes and mountainous regions, however, have maintained their own idiosyncratic ritual
and artistic traditions.
