The First Day Of September 1939
On the first day of September 1939, the whole globe was about to witness the deadliest war ever
recorded in history. This devastating war lasted for six years. The Allies victories in World War
II came from the sacrifices made by the US Marines in order to win many battles. However, in
order to make these sacrifices for the prosperity of the Allied forces and their struggle against
Adolf Hitler s National Socialist Party and his own allies, Japan, Italy, and the USSR, one must
go through intense preparation and learn what it means to be a US Marine. In order to become a
Marine, one requires a certain number of weeks of training. Over the course of the war, these
numbers fluctuated, as low as four weeks and as high as eight weeks, but in the end the required
amount was finalized as seven weeks. During these weeks the newly recruited boots marched for
miles under the drill instructors vigorous and watchful eyes on a regular basis. They also learned
over a thousand subjects, including hand to hand combat, interacting with weaponry and other
equipments, gallantry, and many others. Using the rifle was one of the most important and special
subjects. Over the course of time, all the boots learned to grow a close relationship with their guns.
As an unknown individual once said, ...We did not know how comforting it would be among
enemies, or that we would feel alone and naked without it.... Then there was Record Day, which was
a whole day dedicated to shooting targets. All the
Repetition Of Lucille Clifton s White Lady
Repetition in Lucille Clifton s white lady I like persimmons. I like persimmons. I like persimmons.
There. I ve repeated the phrase thrice. Now, if I asked you to identify whether I like persimmons or
not, you would, almost certainly, say yes. Having the same statement reiterated three times makes
one more confident that it s not only important, but that it s a fact in this context! In Lucille Clifton s
white lady, a tone of desperation is conveyed through repetition of words, phrases, and sentence
structures. Moreover, repetition highlights that desperation is unique not only to the loved ones of
the cocaineaddicts, but to White Lady as well. As an aside before we begin, I will note that tone is a
complex element within poetry. Hence, it is often conveyed through a mish mash of literature
devices, such as repetition, line breaks, diction, etc. Therefore, I will not claim that this
discussion is a comprehensive one that describes all the myriad ways tone has been emphasized
in the poem; I will merely discuss one contributing factor to tone. On the surface, repetition is
used for conveying White Lady s greediness. Repetition first appears in the first to third lines of
the poem, where the word wants is at the start of each. If Clifton wanted to illustrate how
desperately White Lady wished to take away people s loved ones, why didn t she utilize any other
synonyms? For example, she could ve used wants in the first line, desires in the second, and pines

Interior Design At The Present Time
Introduction:

This essay aims to look at ethics within interior design at the present time. I will research the most
common ethics related to interior design and gather information from different research methods

Methodology:

The three main research methods used to gather information on Ethics within interior design at the
present time was a literature review, looking into the main ethics within interior design currently, The
second research method was a survey that looked at the consumers thoughts on these ethics, asking
them about there knowledge of Environmentally friendly alternatives and there own choices for
there homes The third research method used was a case study of a construction project in Seattle,
where architecture firm Case Design, designed and built two ECO friendly homes. It looks at the
environmentally friendly features used and also the benefits that these ECO homes had to the local
area.

Literature review:

One of the research methods used was a literature review looking into ethics within interior design. It
will look at the main ethics at the present time. When researching into the main ethics in current
design the main topic found was sustainable and environmentally friendly design. There were many
articles talking about the need for sustainable design but also the need for a fare trade of these
sustainable materials.

When looking into the ecological side of ethics in design the first article, named Ethical House, was
written by Reid
How Did Stephen Hawking Contribute To The World
If you have ever watched an episode of the Big Bang Theory, you know the character Sheldon s
favorite Physicist is Stephen Hawking. Most commonly known today as the computer talking
wheelchair bound scientist, many do not know much more about his contributions to the science
world.
Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8, 1942 to a father who wanted him to
pursue a career in medicine, like himself, a medical researcher. His mother, Isobel Hawking, being
one of the first women to attend Oxford University, understood his love for the sciences and
physical world. This helped to foster and shape his love of the sky, which directly influenced his
career as a scientist. At the age of 11, he started his studies at St. Albans School before moving on to
University College where he majored in Physics. After leaving University College he attended
Cambridge, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Cosmology. At the early age of 21, Stephen Hawking
was diagnosed with a debilitating disease ALS; however, as the disease slowed and stopped the use
of his body, it did not stop his love of science. He was given two years to ... Show more content on

He currently has an office where he works in the Department for applied Maths and Theoretical
Physics. With twelve honorary degrees, several dozen published books, and numerous awards
Stephen Hawking made an even greater name for himself in 1974 when he proved that black holes
are not just a vacuum vortex like so many had believed prior. Hawking proved that with black holes,
matter in the form of radiation is not always effected by gravitational forces and can escape
gravitational pull. This became known as Hawking Radiation. Building on the idea and principles of
Hawking Radiation, along with Cosmologist, Roger Penrose, they showed that together you need to
match General Relativity with Quantum Theory this would demonstrate that black holes will

Daphne And Diameter
Daphne was an old woman with soft brown hair. She wasn t too small or too tall. Daphne was
really graceful when she worked and was as sweet as could be. She always was smiling and wore
colorful clothes. Daphne had no husband, because she liked doing her own thing. Everyday
Daphne would walk to a field full of dead flowers and plants. She loved flowers and plants, so she
would water them while humming. Daphne would pull all of the weeds out of the ground to
protect the plants. After she took care of them she would watch them and sing songs. At the end of
the day, Daphne would walk back home and return in the morning. Daphne was so eager to save the
field, and would do anything to get them growing beautiful again. One day she got very ill and...

All though, it will either save or kill you. Even though, she thought it would save her , she didn t
know it for a fact since she is mortal. Daphne said, I will take the risk and drink the medicine.
Diameter then gave Daphne the nectar from the gods. Diameter left the house with delight and a
smile on her face because Daphne didn t die from the medicine. The next day, Daphne felt much
better. She went to the field and did her normal routine. Up at Mt. Olympus, Diameter felt good,
but not good enough. Diameter always watched Daphne and knows she always hums, sings,
wants to be fast, and be little, so she made a big decision. Diameter made the decision of, when
Daphne dies she turns into a unique bird called a humming bird. Humming birds are fast, little,
and drink nectar kind of like what Daphne wants to do or what she already did. Diameter told all
the gods and they thought it was a good idea. Diameter had no clue about the plan, she just
wanted to save the field, which she did. Once Daphne died, Diameter went to her and told her why
she got rewarded. Daphne was so thankful, because now she gets to watch over the field longer.
Once Daphne got turned into a hummingbird, she watched over the field everyday and sipped from
the flowers. She also flew to Mt. Olympus everyday with Pegasus. Pegasus and Daphne ended up

Prejudice In Toni Morrison s Claudia
In this passage, despite narrating from a third person view, Morrison provides insight into Claudia
s thoughts. Morrison reveals that Claudia patiently waited for her blue eyes, knowing that to have
something as wonderful as that happen would take a long, long time . Through this brief peek into
Claudia s mind, Morrison reveals both Claudia s innocence and the deep self hatred that has been
instilled in her. Claudia s hope that she will eventually get blue eyes speaks to her lack of maturity.
She thinks that she can have anything if she wants it badly enough, when in truth, she is hoping for
the impossible. Much like how very young children cannot quite grasp the idea of death, Claudia
cannot imagine a world in which her dreams do not come true.... Show more content on

Claudia prays for blue eyes, symbols of typical white beauty, because she feels her own
characteristics are not beautiful. Indeed, the word fervent reflects both Claudia s burning desire to
change and her unbearable disdain for her own racial features. With this in mind, the interplay
between Claudia s innocence and the damage she has sustained creates a sense of sympathy in the
reader. By providing Claudia s innermost desires and insecurities, Morrison paints the girl as a lost
child in an unwelcoming
Into Thin Air John Krakauer
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer shares Jon s first hand experience of one of the most dangerous
seasons of climbing on Mount Everest. Krakauer himself experienced the tragedies of 1996 on
Everest because he was writing an article for Outdoor Magazine about the commercialization of
Everest. Multiple guides during this season suffered from having an over abundance of pride which
often led them to making questionable decisions that ultimately led to the deaths of not only
climbers but also guides. Hubris found among Rob Hall, Scott Fischer, and Anatoli Boukreevhelped
cause the tragic events to transpire on the 1996 Everest expedition. First, Rob Hall, the leader of
Adventure Consultants, suffered from pomposity which helped lead to the deaths... Show more

Scott Fisher was an incredibly experienced climber and had a reputation for surviving even the most
harrowing incidents. Due to this, Scott seemed to think of himself as an invincible being. Mountain
Madness, the climbing company of Scott had many inexperienced climbers during the 1996 season.
This did not seem dangerous to Scott, however and he even remarked that it s not the altitude that s
important, it s your attitude (70). Scott Fisher believed that he had paved a yellow brick road (86)
up to the summit, when in actuality, the path was treacherous and not for the inexperienced climber.
Scott was also unwell on the day he was meant to summit; a gastrointestinal parasite he had picked
up years ago was out of its regular dormancy and causing complications for him. On the Hillary Step,
still hundreds of feet from the summit, Scott was having an arduous time but due to his past history
of challenging physical climbs, no climbers bothered to help him. Scott, despite his physical
condition still believed that he was invincible and summited hours later than the turn around time.
Scout Fischer s pomposity pushed him past his limits and ultimately led to his
Who Is Livy On Promoting A Common Good
2) As Machiavelli says, Such dominions thus acquired are either accustomed to live under a
prince, or to live in freedom, (1). A prince ruling over a country doesn t allow them to be free and
thus doesn t promote a common good. The Prince opposes Discourses on Livy on promoting a
common good because the princeruins the countries he steals. The Prince is in direct relation to
Discourses of Livy s theory by contradiction. In The Prince, Machiavelli first says, for men change
their rulers willingly, hoping to better themselves,... They are deceived, because they afterwards
find by experience they have gone from bad to worse, (4). This proves that the new Prince that rules
over them is not for the interests of them at all, since they went to from bad to worse. Furthermore,

makes the other half poor by kicking them out of their homes. This is not promoting a common
good. It s promoting a singular good for the Prince. Later it discusses how the Prince should permit
the country to remain free, but the free country will in the end rebel against him, this being the only
part in the story that promotes a common good at all, but knowing the country will rebel on him,
the prince likely will not let them be free (20 21). Even farther on The Prince says, ...neither can he

Reality Bytes Henry Jenkins Analysis
Some people consider videogames a waste of time. They say they are bad for kids, not

educational, or socially isolating. Henry Jenkins, the director of the Comparative Media Studies

Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has a broad experience and has done a lot of

research in the video game industry. In his article, Reality Bytes , Henry Jenkins argues in

favor of video games by using the rhetorical strategies of appeal to the authority, appealing to

societal values and creating a credible ethos and appeal to the opposition.

Jenkins counters stereotypes or common assumptions of the public using one strategy,

appeal to authority. People believe that one of the causes youth aggression are because of video

games. Henry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

But young people in general are more likely to be

gamers (Henry Jenkins, 449). Then he adds, The overwhelming majority of kids who play

[video games] do NOT commit [such] antisocial acts (Henry Jenkins, 449). Using the strategy

appealing to the opposition he agrees with it to a certain point, but then he states it is just a

minority of kids who commit such acts. This means that rate of youth aggression rate is very low

making it a logical reason to support this strategy. Another myth that Jenkins debunks is the

public s opinion on almost no girls play computer games , he agrees that it is true until the past

decade. He says, efforts were made in the mid 90s to build games that appealed to girls (Henry

Jenkins, 450). As an example, he mentions the game The Sims a web based game, that has

captured many women s interests who had never played a game before.

All in all, using some of the rhetorical strategies to write this article, Henry Jenkins tries

to change the people s perspective about video games. Even though he acknowledges some of

the public s opinion, he supports his explanations with appeal to the authority, appeal to the

opposition and appealing to societal values and creating a credible

Terry s Ideas About Raising Children
In comment #26, Terry feels as though Christopher s father Ed does not

understand his son since Christopher is slightly different from other children.

Unfortunately, I do not agree with Terry s comment for many different reasons. I

must say raising children is not an easy task. Then there are children like

Christopher where I can only imagine how difficult it is to put myself in his dad s

shoes with everything that he is going through from being a single parent to

having a child that possibly needs more attention than the usual. I think Ed is

doing an outstanding job with teaching his son the best he could and having

confidence in his son when it comes to what Christopher likes and the things he

is capable of doing. An example
