⇒ an = 2 (5 - 1)8
⇒ an = 2 + (4)8
⇒ an = 2 + 32
⇒ an = 34

8. In an AP: a = 8, an = 62, Sn = 210, find n and d.

Ans. : Here, a = 8
an = 62
Sn = 210
We know that
an = a + (n - 1)d

⇒ 62 - 8 = (n - 1)d
⇒ 54 = (n - 1)d
⇒ (n - 1)d = 54 ........ (1)
Again we know that

Page 5
⇒ 192 = 4[6 + 7d]

192
⇒ = 6 + 7d

⇒ d=6
10. How many terms of the AP : 9, 17, 25, …. must be taken to give a sum of 636?
Ans. :
The given AP is 9, 17, 25,...
Here, a = 9
d = 17 - 9 = 8
Let n terms of the AP must be taken
Then, Sn = 636
n

2

n
⇒ [2(9) + (n − 1)8] = 636
2

⇒ n[9 + (n - 1)4] = 636

⇒ n[9 + 4n - 4] = 636
⇒ n[(4n + 5)] = 636
⇒ 4n2 + 5n - 636 = 0
⇒ 4n2 + 53n - 48n - 636 = 0
⇒ n(4n + 53) - 12(4n + 53) = 0
⇒ (4n + 53) (n - 12) = 0
⇒ 4n + 53 = 0 or n - 12 = 0
⇒ n = −
53

4
or n = 12
n = −
53

4
is in admissible as n, being the number of terms, is a natural number
∴ n = 12
Hence, 12 terms of the AP must be taken.
11. The first term of an AP is 5, the last term is 45 and the sum is 400. Find the
number of terms and the common difference.
Ans. :
Here, a = 5
l = 45
S = 400
We know that
n
S = (a + l)
2

n
⇒ 400 = (5 + 45)
2

n
⇒ 400 = (50)
2

Page 6
⇒ 400 − 25n

400
⇒ n =
25

⇒ n = 16

Hence, the number of terms is 16.

Again, we know that
l = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ 45 = 5 + (16 - 1)d

⇒ 45 = 5 + 15d
⇒ 40 = 15 d
40 8
⇒ d = =
15 3

Hence, the common difference is 8

3
.
12. Find the sum of first 22 terms of an AP in which d = 7 and 22nd term is 149.
Ans. :
Here, d = 7
a22 = 149
Let the first term of the AP be a.
We know that
an = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ a22 = a + (22 - 1)d
⇒ a22 = a + 21d
⇒ 149 = a + (21) (7)
⇒ 149 = a + 147

⇒ a = 2

Again, we know that

n
Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2

22
⇒ S22 = [2(2) + (22 − 1)7]
2

⇒ S22 = (11) [4 + 147]

⇒ S22 = (11) (151)
⇒ S22 = 1661
Hence, the sum of the first 22 terms of the AP is 1661.
13. If the sum of the first 7 terms of an A.P. is 49 and that of the first 17 terms is
289, find the sum of its first n terms.
Ans. :
Sn= [2a + (n - 1)d]
n

S7 = 7

2
(2a + 6d) = 49
or, a + 3d = 7 ...........(i)
S17 = 17

2
(2a + 16d) = 289
or, a + 8d = 17 ..........(ii)

Page 7
On subtracting (i) from (ii), we get
or, 5d = 10 or, d = 2
Put d = 2 in (i)
a + 3d = 7
a + 2(3) = 7
a+6=7
and a = 1
n
Sn = [2 × 1 + (n − 1)2]
2

n
= [2 + 2n − 2]
2

n
= [2n]
2

2
= n

Hence, sum of n terms = n2

14. A contract on construction job specifies a penalty for delay of completion
beyond a certain date as follows:
₹ 200 for the first day, ₹ 250 for the second day, ₹ 300 for the third day, etc; the
penalty for each succeeding day being ₹ 50 more than for the preceding day.
How much does a delay of 30 days cost the contractor?
Ans. :
Since the penalty for each succeeding day is ₹ 50 more than for the preceding day.
Therefore, amount of penalty for different days forms an A.P. with first term a =
200 and common difference d = 250 - 200= 50.
We have to find how much does a delay of 30 days cost the contractor.
In other words, we have to find the sum of 30 terms of the A.P.
n = 30, a = 200 and d= 50
∴ Required sum =
30

2
{2 × 200 + (30 − 1) × 50} [∵ Sn =
n

2
[2a + (n − 1)d]]

⇒ Required sum = 15 (400 + 29 × 50)

⇒ Required sum = 15 (400 + 1450)
⇒ Required sum = 15 × 1850 = 27750
Thus, a delay of 30 days will cost the contractor of ₹ 27750.
15. In a potato race, a bucket is placed at the starting point, which is 5 m from the
first potato, and other potatoes are placed 3 m apart in a straight line. There are
n potatoes in the line (See Fig.).

A competitor starts from the bucket, picks up the nearest potato, runs back with
it, drops it in the bucket, runs back to pick up the next potato, runs to the
bucket to drop it in, and she continues in the same way until all the potatoes are
in the bucket. What is the total distance the competitor has to run?

Page 8
[Hint:To pick up the first potato and the second potato, the total distance (in
metres) run by a competitor is 2 × 5 + 2× (5 + 3)]
Ans. : The distances of potatoes are as follows.
5, 8, 11, 14 …

It can be observed that these distances are in A.P.

a = 5

d = 8−5

d = 3
n
Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2

10
S10 = [2(5) + (10 − 1)3]
2

= 5[10 + 9 × 3]

= 5(10 + 27)

= 5(37)

= 185

Every time she has to run back to the bucket, therefore, the total distance that the
competitor has to run will be twice as much.
Therefore, total distance that the competitor will run = 2 × 185 = 370m
Alternatively,
The distances of potatoes from the bucket are 5, 8, 11, 14, … distance run by the
competitor for collecting these potatoes is two times of the distance at which the
potatoes have been kept. Therefore, distances to be run are

10, 16, 22, 28, 34, …

a = 10

d = 16 − 10

d = 6

S10 =?

10
S10 = [2 × 10 + (10 − 1)6]
2

= 5[20 + 54]

= 5(74)

= 370

Therefore, the competitor will run a total distance of 370 m .

16. Which term of the AP: 121, 117, 113, .....is its first negative term?
[Hint: Find n for an < 0]

Ans. :
Given: 121, 117, 113, .......
Here a = 121, d = 117 - 121 = 4
Now, an = a + (n - 1)d

Page 9
= 121 + (n - 1) (-4) = 121 - 4n + 4 = 125 - 4n
For the first negative term, an < 0
125
⇒ 125 − 4n < 0 ⇒ 125 < 4n ⇒ < n
4

1
⇒ 31 < n
4

n is an integer and n > 31

.
Hence, the first negative term is 32nd term
17. The houses of a row are numbered consecutively from 1 to 49. Show that there
is a value of x such that the sum of the numbers of the houses preceding the
house numbered x is equal to the sum of the numbers of the houses following
it. Find this value of x.
[Hint: Sx-1 = S49 - Sx]

Ans. :
According to the question,we have to find the value of x.
We are given an AP, namely 1,2,3,..., (x -1), x, (x +1),..., 49
such that 1 + 2 + 3 +... + (x -1) = (x +1) + (x + 2) +... + 49.
Thus, we have Sx-1= S49- Sx ... (i)
Using the formula, Sn = n

2
(a + l) in (i), we have,
(x−1) 49 x
⋅ {1 + (x − 1)} = ⋅ (1 + 49) − ⋅ (1 + x)
2 2 2

x(x−1) x(x+1)
⇒ + = 1225
2 2

2x2=2450 ⇒ x2 =1225 x=√1225 =35

−−−−
⇒ ⇒

Hence, x = 35.

Section D

* Given section consists of questions of 5 marks each. [45]

18. Fill in the blanks in the following table, given that a is the first term, d is
thecommon difference and an is the nth term of the AP:

a d n an
i 7 3 8 ...
ii -18 ... 10 0
iii ... -3 18 -5
iv -18.9 2.5 ... 3.6
v 3.5 0 105 ...
Ans. :
i. Given: a = 7, d = 3 and n = 8,
an = ?
We know that an = a + (n – 1)d
Thus, a8 = 7 + (8 – 1)3 = 7 + 21 = 28
ii. Given: a = - 18, n = 10, an = 0, d = ?
We know that an = a + (n – 1)d
Thus, 0 = - 18 + (10 – 1)d
0 = -18 + 9d
or, 9d = 18
d = 18/9 = 2
iii. Given: d = - 3, n = 18, an = - 5, a = ?
We know that an = a + (n – 1)d
-5 = a + (18 - 1) (-3)
-5 = a - 51
or a = -5 + 51 = 46
iv. Given: a = -18.9, d = 2.5, an = 3.6, n = ?
We know that an = a + (n – 1)d
3.6 = – 18.9 + (n – 1)2.5
or, 2.5(n – 1) = 3.6 + 18.9 = 22.5
n – 1 = 22.5/2.5 = 9
n = 9 + 1 = 10
v. Given: a = 3.5, d = 0, n = 105, an= ?
We know an = a + (n - 1)d
a105 = 3.5 + (105 - 1)0
a105 = 3.5 + 0
a105 = 3.5

19. Find the 20th term from the last term of the AP : 3, 8, 13, …., 253.
Ans. :
The given AP is 3, 8, 13, ..., 253
Here, a = 3
d=8-3=5
l = 253
Let the number of terms of the AP be n.
Term, nth term = l
⇒ 3 + (n - 1)5 = 253 ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

⇒ (n - 1)5 = 253 - 3
⇒ (n - 1)5 = 250
250
⇒ n −1 =
5

⇒ n - 1 = 50
⇒ n = 50 + 1
⇒ n = 51
So, there are 51 terms in the given AP.
Now, 20th term from the last term
= (51 - 20 + 1)th term from the beginning
= 32th term from the beginning
= 3 + (32 - 1)5 ∵ a = a + (n − 1)d
n

= 3 + 155
= 158
Hence, the 20th term from the last term of the given AP is 158.
Aliter. Let us write the given AP in the reverse order.
Then the AP becomes 253, 248, 243, ...., 3
Here, a = 253
d = 248 - 253 = -5
Therefore, required term
= 20th term of the AP
= 253 + (20 - 1) (-5) ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

= 253 - 95
= 158
Hence, the 20th term from the last term of the given AP is 158.
20. The sum of the 4th and 8th terms of an AP is 24 and the sum of the 6th and
10th term is 44. Find the first three terms of the AP.
Ans. :
Let the first term and the common difference of the AP be a and d respectively.
Then,
4th term = a + (4 - 1)d = a + 3d ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

8th term = a + (8 - 1)d = a + 7d ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

6th term = a + (6 - 1)d = a + 5d ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

and 10th term = a + (10 - 1)d = a + 9d ∵ an = a + (n − 1)d

According to the question,

4th term + 8th term = 24
⇒ (a + 3d) + (a + 7d) = 24

⇒ 2a + 10d = 24

⇒ a + 5d = 12 .......... (1) (Dividing throughout by 2)

6th term + 10th term = 24

⇒ (a + 5d) + (a + 9d) = 44

⇒ 2a + 14d = 44

⇒ a + 7d = 22 .......... (2) (Dividing throughout by 2)

Solving (1) and (2), we get

a = -13
d = 15
So, First term = -13
Second term = -13 + 5 = -8
Third term = -8 + 5 = -3
Hence, the first three terms of the given AP are -13, -8 and -3.
21. In an AP: a3 = 15, S10 = 125, find d and a10.

Ans. :
Here, a3 = 15
S10 = 125
We know that
an = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ a3 = a + (3 - 1)d
⇒ a3 = a + 2d
⇒ 15 = a + 2d
⇒ a + 2d = 15 ...... (1)

Again, we know that

n
Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2

10
⇒ S10 = [2a + (10 − 1)d]
2

⇒ S10 = 5(2a + 9d)

⇒ 125 = 5(2a + 9d)
⇒ 25 = 2a + 9d
⇒ 2a + 9d = 25 ....... (2)
Solving equation (1) and equation (2), we get
a = 17
d = -1
Now an = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ a10 = a + (10 - 1)d

⇒ a10 = a + 9d
⇒ a10 = 17 + 9(-1)

22. In an AP: an = 4, d = 2, Sn = -14, find n and a.

Ans. :
Here, an = 4
d=2
Sn = -14
We know that
an = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ 4 = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ 4 = a + 2n - 2

⇒ 4 + 2 = a + 2n

⇒ 6 = a + 2n

⇒ a + 2n = 6 ...... (1)

Again, we know that

n
Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2

n
⇒ −14 = [2a + (n − 1)2]
2

⇒ -14 = n[a + (n - 1)]

⇒ -14 = n (a + n - 1)
⇒ -14 = n (6 - n - 1) .......From (1), (a + 2n = 6 ⇒ a + n = 6 - n)
⇒ -14 = n(-n + 5)
⇒ -14 = -n2 + 5n
⇒ n2 - 7n + 2n - 14 = 0
⇒ n(n - 7) + 2(n - 7) = 0
⇒ (n - 7) (n + 2) = 0
⇒ n - 7 = 0 or n + 2 = 0

⇒ n = 7 or n = -2

⇒ n = - 2 is in admissible as n, being the number of terms, is a natural number.

∴ n = 7

Putting n = 7 in equation (1), we get

a + 2(7) = 6
⇒ a + 14 = 6
⇒ a = 6 - 14
⇒ a = -8
23. Find the sum of the odd numbers between 0 and 50.
Ans. :
The odd numbers between 0 and 50 are 1, 3, 5, 7, ....., 49.
Here, a2 - a4 = 3 - 1 = 2
a3 - a2 = 5 - 3 = 2
a4 - a3 = 7 - 5 = 2
i.e. ak+1 - ak is the same everytime.
So, the above list of numbers forms an AP.
Here, a = 1
d=2
l = 49
Let the number of terms of the AP be n.
Then, l = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ 49 = 1 + (n - 1)d

⇒ (n - 1)2 = 48
48
⇒ n −1 =
2

⇒ n - 1 = 24
⇒ n = 24 + 1
⇒ n = 25
Hence, the number of terms of the AP be 25.
∴ Sum of the odd numbers between 0 and 50 = S25

24. A sum of ₹ 700 is to be used to give seven cash prizes to students of a school
for their overall academic performance. If, each prize is ₹ 20 less than its
preceding term, find the value of each of the prizes.
Ans. :
It is given that the sum of seven cash prizes is equal to ₹ 700.
And, each prize is ₹ 20 less than its preceding term.
Let the value of first prize = ₹ a
Let the value of second prize =₹ (a−20)
Let the value of third prize = ₹ (a−40)
So, we have a sequence of the form:
a, a−20, a−40, ...................
It is an arithmetic progression because the difference between consecutive terms
is constant.
First term = a, Common difference = d = (a − 20) − a= −20
n = 7 (Because there are total of seven prizes)
S7 = ₹ 700 {given}
Applying formula, S n =
n

2
[2a + (n − 1)d] to find sum of n terms of AP, we get
7
S7 = [2a + (7 − 1)(−20)]
2

7
⇒ 700 = [2a − 120]
2

⇒ 200 = 2a− 120

⇒ 320 = 2a
⇒ a =160
Therefore, value of first prize = ₹ 160
Value of second prize = 160 - 20= ₹ 140
Value of third prize = 140 - 20= ₹ 120
Value of fourth prize = 120 - 20 = ₹ 100
Value of fifth prize = 100 - 20 = ₹ 80
Value of sixth prize = 80 - 20 = ₹ 60
Value of seventh prize = 60 - 20 = ₹ 40
25. 200 logs are stacked in the following manner: 20 logs in the bottom row, 19 in
the next row, 18 in the row next to it and so on (see Fig.). In how many rows are
the 200 logs placed and how many logs are in the top row?

Ans. : It can be observed that the numbers of logs in rows are in an A.P.
20, 19, 18 …

For this A.P.,

a = 20

d = a2 − a1

= 19 − 20

= −1

Let a total of 200 logs be placed in n rows.

Sn = 200
n
Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2

n
200 = [2(20) + (n − 1)(−1)]
2

400 = n(40 − n + 1)

400 = n(41 − n)

2
400 = 41n − n

2
n − 41n + 400 = 0

2
n − 16n − 25n + 400 = 0

n(n − 16) − 25(n − 16) = 0

(n − 16)(n − 25) = 0

Either (n − 16) = 0 or n − 25 = 0

n = 16 or n = 25

an = a + (n − 1)d

a16 = 20 + (16 − 1)(−1)

a16 = 20 − 15

a16 = 5

Similarly,
a25 = 20 + (25 − 1)(−1)

a25 = 20 − 24

a25 = −4

Clearly, the number of logs in 16 row is 5 . However, the number of logs in

th
25
th

row is negative, which is not possible.

Therefore, 200 logs can be placed in 16 rows and the number of logs in the th
16

row is 5 .
26. The sum of the third and the seventh terms of an AP is 6 and their product is 8.
Find the sum of the first sixteen terms of the AP.
Ans. :
Let the first term and the common difference of the AP be a and d respectively.
According to the question,
Third term + seventh term = 6
⇒ [a + (3 - 1)d] + [a + (7 - 1)d] = 6 = a + (n - 1)d
⇒ (a + 2d) + (a + 6d) = 6 ⇒ 2a + 8d = 6

⇒ a + 4d = 3 ..... (1)

Dividing throughout by 2 &

(third term) (seventh term) = 8
⇒ (a + 2d) (a + 6d) = 8

⇒ (a + 4d - 2d) (a + 4d + 2d) = 8

⇒ (3 - 2d) (3 + 2d) = 8

⇒ 9 - 4d2 = 8

Case I, when d =
1

Then from (1), a + 4 ( ) = 3 1

⇒ a + 2 = 3 ⇒ a = 3 - 2 ⇒ a = 1

∴ Sum of first sixteen terms of the AP = S16

Case II. When d = − 1

Then from (1),
