Effect of Surface Area to Volume Ratio on Rate of Osmosis
[Type text] [Type text] [Type text]

_An experiment on the effect of surface area to volume ratio on the rate of osmosis of Solanum
tuberosum L._

BACKGROUND

A cell needs to perform diffusion in order to survive. Substances, including water, ions, and
molecules that are required for cellular activities, can enter and leave cells by a passive process
such as diffusion. Diffusion is random movement of molecules in a net direction from a region of
higher concentration to a region of lower concentration order to reach equilibrium. Diffusion does
not require any energy input. Diffusion is needed for basic cell functions for example, in humans,
cells obtain oxygen via diffusion from the alveoli of the lungs into the blood and in plants water ...

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the potato cube with the highest surface area to volume ratio (the 1x1x1 cube) had
the fastest rate of diffusion as it had the largest percentage increase in mass. While all the other
cubes of potato had larger increases in mass at face value compared to the smallest cube, the
smallest cube had the largest overall gain in percentage. The results support my hypothesis that the
smallest cube will have a higher rate of osmosis because it has a proportionally larger amount of
surface area compared to its volume.

As seen from the graph above, despite my hypothesis being correct, the trend in the percentage
increase of mass was not a steady

Week 3 Assignment Bootstrapping Chapter 10 Problem 31
Complete problem 31 of Chapter 10 (shown below), and submit to your instructor. Show your
calculations and the algebraic manipulation of the price equation for the bond. In addition to solving
the problem, write a 100 to 200 word essay on the term structure of fixed income securities.
One method used to obtain an estimate of the term structure of interest rates is called
bootstrapping. Suppose you have a one year zero coupon bond with a rate of r1 and a two year
bond with an annual coupon payment of C. To bootstrap the two year rate, you can set up the
following equation for the price (P) of the coupon bond: /(1+r_1 )+(C_2+Par value)/(1+r_2 )^2
Because you can observe all of the variables except r2, the spot rate for two years, you can solve
for this interest rate. Suppose there is a zero coupon bond with one year to maturity that sells for
$949 and a two year bond with a 7.5 percent coupon paid annually that sells for $1,020. What is the
interest rate for two years? Suppose a bond with three years until maturity and an 8.5 percent annual
coupon sells for $1,029. What is the interest rate for three
Reflection On Group Work
Teamwork can be complex and challenging given task and interpersonal issues, level of group
motivation and expected performance standards. The concrete experience spoken about in this
reflection piece is in reference to the effectiveness of myself as a group member and the group,
working to write a report outlining the organisation and structure of Volkswagen. Dennison (2009)
applies Kolb s learning cycle (1981, 1984) which suggests that learning moves through a
continuous cycle, between having an experience, and then reflecting on that action. This cycle has
been developed from Lewin s (1951) model for experiential learning. Reflection termed by Boud,
Keogh and Walker (1985) is a forum of response to the learner to experience (p. 18). On reflection,
the early set group dynamicswas a defining factor in the experience, and how the team conducted
themselves throughout the task. Meyerson, Wick and Kramer (1996) note that such rapidly
converging groups require methods for developing swift trust (p. 8), which can explain why initial
group dynamics are so important. I took on multiple team roles, including group leader, which could
be translated into the team not performing collectively on a high level, however, I could view this
as a personal ineffectiveness of my leadershipstyle.

The effectiveness of working in a team varied between members. My personal experience, academic
theorists, and further critical analysis can be used to discuss this. According to Ket De Vries
Examples Of Manipulation In The Crucible
Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to
you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.
Abigail Williams has said this quote during Act I of The Crucible to the other girls caught dancing
in the woods. Abigail is a seventeen year old who has taken charge of the Salem Witch Trials.
Abigail and I portray common traits such as manipulating others, self centered personalities, and
leading many girls. The first trait that Abigail and I associate with is manipulating others. During
The Crucible Abigail manipulates the girls caught dancing in the woods and the people of Salem.
While she bullied the girls into not telling the truth, Abby also kept the people of Salem invested in
the idea of witchcraft in the town. Although no one has died by my form of manipulation, Abigail
and I share this trait. My parents sometimes fall into my manipulating ways and my latest action
has dealt with crying in order to get concert tickets. Another time I can be seen manipulating others
is when I ask my friends for gum or food. Normally I will bring up a time when I gave them
something, even... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Crucible shows Abigail being self centered by killing many people only to save herself and
running away with all of her uncle s money. While I have not been as self centered as Abby, I may
be found to act in a selfish way. Considering I am an only child, I only think about how I feel in
some cases like making plans with friends and doing what I want to do. Although my parents
never fail to put a stop to my bad behavior, I sometimes find the habit as a part of my traits. This
trait also kicks in for me when I make my own plans without taking my parents into consideration.
Since I do not have my license yet it becomes a problem when they have to put their night on hold to
drive me
Male vs. Female Offenders
The prison world is predominately male dominated. As the years go by, female incarceration levels
have been rapidly increasing. The prisons in early days didn t have to worry about dealing with two
different types of inmates as there were not that many females incarcerated. While male and female
inmates do have some similarities, they also have some distinct differences. The way they conduct
themselves in prisonare different; as are they way they interact with other inmates. Males typically
are in prison for more violent crimes than women, making the maximum security prisons mainly
male. Throughout this paper, these differences and a few similarities are discussed.

290 291). As with males, many female offenders are abusers of alcohol and drugs and were under
the influence of either at the time of their offense. According to demographic data from 2002, more
than 46% of females were using drugs or alcohol at the time of their offense, and more than 55%
admitted to drinking regularly.
Many females in prisons find surrogate families while they are being incarcerated. It is a personality
trait of many females to band together with others to pull through a rough and emotional time, such
as being in prison. Female inmates tend to have problems that males don t that bond them together
stronger. One such bond is the inmates that are pregnant at the time of their incarceration.
Homosexuality is prevalent in female institutions, largely because a high percentage of women
have been abused and misused by men for most of their lives, and they already have turned to
other females for their emotional needs. 1 in 4 women in prison has been sexually assaulted, most
likely by male staff. Sexual Assault in a women s prison isn t primarily about dominance as it is in
a male prison.

MALE VS. FEMALE INMATES

While there are many similarities between male and female inmates, there are also many differences.
The American prisons have been predominately male and continue to do so.
Inventions Of Canada In The 1930 s
After the gruesome war Canada had fought in, it has left the economy in pieces, many returning
soldiers are unable to find a job or get resettled in the old ones they had left. Many women that had
contributed greatly during the war are left in the dust as soon as the war had ended. Canada s
economy will slowly repair itself, though it will take a long time. This is also the time that new
innovations have arisen. There are many inventions that are being created such as the telephone or
the airplane, but the ones that take the spotlight are the radio and the automobile. The radio is the
most interesting because it has changed the way entertainment works. The inventor of the radio is
still unknown however there are many great people that contributed to the creation of the radio.
Heinrich Hertz, a German scientist has proven that radio waves occur in nature. In 1896
Guglielmo Marconi had sent a Morse code radio signal and had also received it. This was the spark
of the radio. He had applied for a patent in wireless telegraphy and was granted.... Show more

The radio went from being a novelty to the most demanded thing in stored between 1923 and
1930. The stores just can t keep up with the amounts of demand from Canadians. Every day after
dinner we all gather around the fire place and listen to what s on the radio, states a father of two. It
is the best thing I own in the house. Since the number of families with radios increases so does the
number of radio station. Foster Hewitt is the most famous sportscaster and Canadians just love to
hear him on the radio. About 6 percent of income Canadians get are being spent on
Isolation In Louis Perez s The History Of Japan
Japanese technology and culture is everywhere today; in my room alone I own a Nintendo 3ds, a
Nintendo GameCube, PS3, a Toshiba laptop and nine box sets of Japanese anime, with a further
three series downloaded on my iPod. That isn t even including the book and manga series I own
(some in the original Japanese, some translated into English.) Popular TV shows like Avatar: The
Last Airbender now mimic Japanese style of cartoons, while we have outright adopted other
shows as our own, such as Yu Gi Oh and Dragon Ball Z. In short, Japanese culture is everywhere,
especially if you know where to look for it. It s everywhere; foreign culture is all around us. It is
almost insane to believe that just a little less than two hundred years ago, the Japanese... Show more

In fact, not only did they survive, but became a major power in the world, as proven by the Russo
Japanese war, in which the Japanese trounced the Russians; and even today, they remain an major
power, with a major hand in trade. Personally, I am amazed at how quickly Japan managed
modernization; what took Europeans hundreds of years to achieve, they managed to do so in
decades. Yes, the Europeans might have forced, the Japanese to modernize much sooner they
otherwise might have, but in truth, I am glad. People own a lot of technology from Japan, a country
that wouldn t have been able to compete with the West two hundred fifty years ago. Now, we
regularly buy items from them like smartphones, and gaming consoles, cars; some of the most
cutting edge technology is from Japan. It s easy to image that if Americans were to cut off ties to
Japan today, that they might outstrip us technologically in a few
My Family Tradition At The Slopes Of Rural Switzerland
Every family has different traditions stemming from their background. My parents come from two
significantly different backgrounds. My mother hailed from the slopes of rural Switzerland while
my father was a military child growing up in a multitude of places, but mainly, from the East coast.
My parents tried to pass on elements of their childhood traditions on to my sister and I. This created
a very unique new familytradition which mainly emphasized the values of punctuality, the
appreciation of nature, and the importance of democracy. One of the major three ideas of my
family s tradition is punctuality, it is the difference between showing you respect someone else or
that you don t. I remember many times where we were early to someone s house, so we waited
around the corner so as not to arrive early and startle the people we were coming to visit. I used to
always laugh at my mothersince what good can two minutes do, but I have started to notice that
now, I too will wait close to my destination so I can easily get to it at the agreed upon time has
arrived. This has changed me majorly as I too know wait around corners unordered to not be
early or late. This has led me to quickly draw while waiting in order to pass the time. It has
probably been one of the main sources for my love of both maps and flags as I could quickly start
drawing them and pick up at a later point with relative ease. I have changed this tradition by
convincing my parents that we don t have
An Definition Of Moral Theory
Another moral theory, also born of Deontological Perspectives, comes from WD Ross. In contrast to
Kant, who stated that moral positions can be deduced by reason and are absolutely binding, Ross
believes that we determine moral positions through intuition of the rightness or wrongness on the
action. This intuition allows us to determine what our duties are while these duties are not dependent
on the outcomes or circumstances, but how we rank these duties is dependent on a situation. In turn,
this creates what Ross refers to as Prima Facieduties. Prima Facie duties are duties that are
obligatory duties that can be trumped by other duties depending on our situation. Ross gives an
example of seven of these prima facie duties in his writings: beneficence, non maleficence, justice,
self improvement, fidelity, reparation, and gratitude. These duties arise because we intuit them to
be true and binding duties. In Ross s view, all of these duties are binding, but he does not exclude,
as Kant does that these duties may overlap and run contrary to one another in any given situation.
We can only act in accordance with what our perception is of the situation and try to do our best,
but we may often fail as a result. While this theory is superior to Kant in that it does allow for more
universal applicability and wiggle room to fit various cultures, the main issue with Ross s theory is
that it relies on the intuition of flawed humans to determine self evident duties and does not
