CHAPTER I.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the study, conceptual

framework, research paradigm, statement of the problem, assumptions,

significance of the study, scope and delimitation, and definition of

terms. Focusing in determining the experiences of the selected

Humanities and Social Sciences Students of the Naguilian National High

School.

Background of the Study

This study examines the benefits of being exposed in book rather

than technologies to the HUMSS students of the Naguilian National High

School. There has been a gradual shift from paper-based reading to

reading on digital devices, such as computers, tablets, and cell-phones.

Although there are clear advantages of digital-based assessment and

learning, including reduced costs and increased individualization. In

addition to this statement, there is a big advantage in preferring to be

exposed in technologies. Such as having a low comprehension in reading

because they chose to be expose din technologies rather than books that

can help them to develop more of their skills and knowledge.

Today's modern world has a wide range of advanced technologies,

including as telephone communication systems, social media,

transportation, and so on. The internet becomes a global community with

kids. The increased term is considered home to hundreds upon thousands

of programs utilized to gather diverse information as well as for

students. To read learning materials.

According to Farida Rahim, reading is one of activities in the

process of acquiring knowledge. Through the student's literature,

information that is presented in a book can be gleaned which they can

apply in their daily life. Students can thus improve their quality by

becoming interested in reading. A desire to read is a strong desire

along with efforts-the one's striving to read. Interest in reading is

embodied in the elements of mindfulness, willingness, encouragement and

pleasure to read. All of this is an activity of perseverance and a

sedentary nature.

One of the advantages in being exposed in books is that they can

develop their language skills that students must master is reading.

Through reading in books, students will become better acquainted with

the world, and more and more students can develop other language skills.

Generally, people can agree that in books there are more knowledge that

we can gather rather than in technologies because in technologies there

are possibilities that we can get false information. It is in line with

the Hodgson's opinion (in Tarigan, 2013:7) stating that "reading is a

process for gaining messages."

Conceptual Framework

While technology is the most use thing in today's generation o

gather some of the information, there are still huge difference between

books and technologies. According to Umi Fathimah, on the "corporate

frame" blog the beginning of technology was created in the middle of

human life to make it easier for any human activity. Today, however,

technology has proliferated more and more as the age progresses. And so

it adds technologies that increasingly coddled human life.

Ackerman and Lauterman (2012) studied how different media affect

learning outcomes by looking at how learners monitor their comprehension and

manage their study time. In this subject, the researchers discover that

there are various reasons why some of the students still chooses books

over technology. Various of the problems that the researchers can

provide are that they still believe that there are still information in

books that we cannot find in technologies or in online search engine

that can enhance our intellectual or what we call knowledge.

Wherein the researchers discovered that there are still books that

are unpublished that we can get some more detailed information to help

us understand the things that we cannot still understand. Other than

enhancing or developing your knowledge, books also helps the students to

increase their understanding in every literature that they can read,

where they also enhances their reading comprehension.

The quick development of technology in recent decades has changed

how people communicate, learn, and obtain information. Children and

teenagers frequently utilize digital gadgets like computers, tablets,

and smartphones, which have become commonplace. Although there are many

advantages to modern technologies, such as quick access to information

and interactive learning resources, questions have been raised about how

they may affect intellectual and cognitive development. Books have long

been the main resource for education and intellectual development.

Reading is known to develop critical thinking abilities, increase

vocabulary, and improve understanding. Deeper cognitive processing and

improved information retention have been linked to the tactile

experience of reading a real book and the use of the imagination.

On the other hand, concerns have been voiced regarding the possible

disadvantages of using digital technologies for entertainment and

education. Overuse of screens has been connected to disturbed sleep

habits, shorter attention spans, and less physical exercise.

Furthermore, the rapid pace of digital media consumption may hinder the

growth of long-term focus and critical thinking. The purpose of this

study is to investigate how exposure to books and technology differ in

their effects on intellectual growth. In order to offer insights that

might guide educational practices and parental counsel, the research

looks at how these various media impact cognitive capacities like

critical thinking, focus, and academic performance. Developing ways to

maximize intellectual progress in an increasingly digital society

requires an understanding of the effects of these exposures.

Statement of the Problem

Regarding about this issue, This research examines how exposure to

traditional books compared to modern technologies impacts intellectual

development, focusing on cognitive skills, comprehension, and critical

thinking abilities.

Wherein, In today's digital age, children and young adults are

increasingly exposed to technology, which has become an integral part of

their daily lives. However, this shift towards technology raises

questions about the impact on intellectual development compared to

traditional book reading. This study aims to investigate whether

exposure to books rather than technologies has a more significant

influence on developing cognitive and intellectual abilities in

individuals. Specifically, the research seeks to understand how reading

books versus engaging with digital media affects skills such as critical

thinking, concentration, comprehension, and overall academic

performance. By exploring these differences, the study intends to

provide insights that could inform educational strategies and parental

guidance in fostering intellectual growth.

This study sought to determine the impacts of being exposed in books

rather than technologies of Grade 11 students at Naguilian National

High School.

This sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the perceptions of selected grade 11 students on the

influence of being exposed in books rather than technologies in

developing their intellect.

2. What are the things that they can develop through reading books?

3. What are the difference between reading in books and reading through

technologies?

4. How does the selected grade 11 students of the HUMSS strand can see

the benefits of the study?

Assumptions

When discussing the impact of smart shaming on the academic

performance of students, there may be several underlying assumptions.

These assumptions can influence how we understand and address the issue:

1. The researchers assume that in this study, the respondents will

determine the good values of reading in books.

2. The researchers may assume that this study will help the students of

to develop their intellect by reading books that can enhance their

vocabulary, critical-thinking, decision making, and etc.

3. The researchers assumes that the respondents will realize the

influence of the books n terms of enhancing their cognitive.

4. The respondents in the study would be shifting in reading books

rather than technologies.

Significance of the Study

The significance of study in The Influence of being Exposed in

Books rather than Technologies in Developing their Intellectual In the

current digital era, the argument over the relative benefits of

literature and technology for intellectual growth is becoming more and

more pertinent. Teachers, parents, and legislators must comprehend how

these various media affect children's and adolescents' cognitive and

emotional development as they navigate a world full of screens.

Reading books exposes people to a wide variety of vocabulary and

rich language, which improves language learning. Analytical thinking,

problem-solving, and critical information interpretation are all

enhanced when one is exposed to complex tales. Diverse viewpoints and

experiences are frequently explored in literature, which promotes

emotional intelligence and empathy. Books let readers think creatively

and imagine situations by stimulating their imagination.Reading demands

prolonged focus, which facilitates information retention and deep

cognitive processing.

Digital media frequently encourages skimming rather than in-depth

reading, which can result in superficial comprehension. Technology's

ability to multitask can shorten attention spans and lower the quality

of learning experiences. While technology can increase connectivity, it

may also decrease in-person interactions, which are essential for social

skill development. The abundance of information available online can

overwhelm students, making it challenging to identify reliable sources.

Creating a balanced approach to learning requires an understanding of

how literature and technology affect intellectual development.

The fundamental abilities acquired by reading books are invaluable,

even while technology has special benefits in terms of accessibility and

engagement. Making reading a priority in the classroom may foster

critical thinkers who are capable of navigating the complexity of

today's environment. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to

these distinctions and promote a more deliberate incorporation of both

media into teaching methods.

Future Researchers: For the future researchers, this study will benefit

them because it can serve as a reference point for determining some

related issues, such as knowing the consequences of the said study.

Researchers: The researchers will benefit from this study as it will

showcase the advantages of being exposed in books rather than

technologies in developing their intellect. It could also identify gaps

in the existing research, leading to further studies related topics.

Students: Students can benefit in this study because this can serve them

as a advice and a prior knowledge about what can be the benefits of this

research to every students.

Teachers: In this study, the teachers can also get or gather some

knowledge about the benefits of being exposed in books rather than

technologies in developing the intellect of the students. Wherein it

shows the advancement and also the fast development of the students

intellectual.

Scope and Delimitation

This study looks at how exposure to books affects peoples social,

emotional, and cognitive development in comparison to modern

technologies. It examines, in particular, how extended exposure to

printed book whether they be novels, academic texts, or other printed

literature affects critical thinking, creativity, and social skills in

contrast to the effects of digital technology exposure, such as social

media, computers, and smartphones.

The goal of the study is to determine how these two media affect

social interaction, creativity, and reading comprehension. It highlights

the distinctions between these two engagement styles in terms of
