Essay on Impact of World War One on American Literature
The Impact of World War One on American Literature
As people mature, their beliefs evolve; as a child it is easy to be guided by adults, to believe in
adults. As adults, people have their own beliefs. It is the period in the middle that is the hardest. As
children begin to grow, they begin to push limits and question authority. The modernist period in
American literature is comparable to those teenage years. In the early stages of American literature,
America looked to her mother England for guidance. The very traditional literature that resulted had
a strong emphasis on religion, family, and country. In early literature it was scandalous to question
God; the family was only to be portrayed as a supportive, loving community; and ... Show more

The young man, George Gearson, is unsure about enlisting, for he is more of an intellectual type
than he is a soldier looking for a fight. George s fiancée is Editha, who in her innocent ignorance
cannot see why George even has to question enlisting. Editha sees war as a chance for George to be
a hero and thereby become worthy of her and her love. She threatens to break their engagement
because of George s reluctance to serve his country. She writes George a letter telling him, There is
no greater honor above America with me. In this great hour there is no other honor (365). These
sentiments sound ridiculous, but it is actually an accurate depiction of the state of mind of many
young Americans in this era. Going to war for America was believed to be their duty, and it was an
honor to do their duty.
When America called on her young men once again to go to Europe and fight in the trenches of
World War I, they went. America s decision to join a war on foreign soil that was already in
progress was highly questionable. Many people attributed America s involvement in the war with
the sinking of the passenger liner Lusitania, but even more attributed the decision to economic
reasons, like Senator George Norris, who said, We are going to war upon the command of Gold
(931). American soldiers and sailors did not know why
Double Media In Social Media
Social media is the 21st century s way of connecting to others, especially in the technologically
dominated society that 2017 is. Social media platforms, such as Instagram and Snapchat, although
different ways of interacting allows for those that use it to connect with celebrities such as Serena
Williams. Serena Williams, although an active and dominating tennis player still maintains contact
and connections to her audience through multiple social media platforms. However, when analyzing
her social media platforms, her activity is shown to differ depending on the platform. Williams often
uses her Instagram for marketing, her ideals, and promotion while her Snapchat is centered on her
daily routine and life. Therefore, in my essay a holistic analyzation of Williams Snapchat versus her
Instagram is presented in that celebrity social media is shown to represent more than just pictures
but concepts of self representation and double consciousness.
Serena Williams Instagram upon first glance is shown to reflect a typical user, in that it has her
friends, dogs, self ideals, and selfies throughout the page. However, once analyzed further reflects
something that Williams Snapchat does better at concealing, double consciousness. Double
consciousness is defined as individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into
several parts.... (Kristen) Du Bois said this of double consciousness in Of Our Spiritual Striving a
peculiar sensation, this double consciousness,

Female Equality In The Canterbury Tales
Struggle For Female Equality in The Wife of Bath s Prologue and Tale
When Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales, the social structure of his world was changing rapidly.
Chaucer himself was a prime example of new social mobility being granted to members of the
emerging middle class. He had opportunities to come into contact not only with earthy characters
from varied ports of call, but with the wealthy nobility. He was also married to a knight s daughter,
someone of higher birth than himself, a clear demonstration of a more lenient class structure (pp. 76
77*). As a member of this changing society, Chaucer had a keen perception of the attitudes and
philosophies which were emerging and shaping the roles specific to people s lives. ... Show more

(p. 118, ll. 61 64)
In this manner, the wife addresses and dispels the justification for looking down on women who
have been married more than once. She shows that they are comparable in morals to men who have
also had more than one spouse.
Women are also subject to what would now be termed Catch 22s in their relationships with men.
These inescapable paradoxes from which men are exempt are also part of what the wife believes
is keeping women subservient. As part of her invective against one of her husbands, the wife
explains how women are often put in no win situations. She says, And if that she be fair, thou
verray knave, / Thou saist that every holour wol hire have (p. 122, ll. 259 60). She then shows how
women are stigmatized even if they are ugly, because then they become the ones with voracious
sexual appetites:
And if that she be foul, thou saist that se Coviteth every man she may see; For as a spaniel she wol
on him lepe, Til that she finde som man hire to chepe. (p. 173, ll. 271 74)
No matter what the woman s characteristics, men employ a double standard that prevents her from
realizing virtue.
