THE GREAT
Making Disciples of All Nations Series
COMMISSION SERIES
Matthew 28:19-20
OBEY TO MAKE DISCIPLES
“It’s easier for us to make disciples
when we know how to obey.”
“Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you
always, to the very end of the age .”
- Matthew 28:19-20
“Obedience is the climax of
discipleship.”
DISCIPLESHIP IS NOTHING BUT
ABOUT OBEDIENCE
•Discipleship is an exciting journey for the
obedient.
•Discipleship isn’t just about multiplication;
it’s about duplication. It is about
duplicating the attitude and character of
Christ Jesus.
“Not everything that multiplies have true
discipleship, but everything that has true
discipleship multiplies.”
“A disciple who doesn’t have a humble heart to
follow can never be an effective discipler.”
The Great Commission can be summarized in one
word— OBEDIENCE.
The Lord will triumph with His faithful followers.
They will wage war against the Lamb, but the
Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord
of lords and King of kings —and with him will be
his called, chosen and faithful followers.”
Revelation 17:14
HOW TO OBEY GOD?
KNOW GOD AND HIS COMMANDS
• It’s difficult to obey a person whom we do not know.
The more we know the person, the easier for us to
follow. In the same way, it’s difficult to obey a
command that we do not know. The more we know a
command, the easier for us to know if we violate or
we follow them.
“Love the Lord your God with all your “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
heart and with all your soul and with - Matt. 22:39
all your mind.” - Matt. 22:37
TO KNOW GOD IS TO KNOW JESUS
The only way for us to obey God is to know
Jesus Christ. That is why Apostle Paul tells in
his epistle to the believers in Colossae that all
the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are
hidden in Christ.(Colossians 2:2-3 NIV)
The Son is the image of the invisible God
•JESUS is the firstborn over all creation. For in him
all things were created: things in heaven and on
earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
powers or rulers or authorities; all things have
been created through him and for him.-
Colossians 1:15-16 NIV
HOW TO OBEY GOD?
TRUST GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART
•Only those who know God can trust in Him.
This clearly tells us that anyone who doesn’t
trust in Him doesn’t know Him yet.
“Trust is built on knowledge, while
obedience is built on trust.”
HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN WE TRUST GOD?
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean
not on your own understanding; in all your ways
submit to him, and he will make your paths
straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear
the Lord and shun evil.
- Proverbs 3:5-7NIV
We trust God when we lean not on
our own understanding
When Abraham obeyed God, he didn’t trust in his
own understanding. “By faith Abraham, when
God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He
who had embraced the promises was about to
sacrifice his one and only son.”
- Hebrews 11:17
We trust God when we don’t become wise
in our own eyes.
By faith Noah, when warned about things
not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save
his family. By his faith he condemned the
world and became heir of the righteousness
that is in keeping with faith.- Hebrews 11:7
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so
are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts.”
- Isaiah 55:9 NIV
We trust God when we shun evil.
When Joseph was enticed by his master’s
wife to come to bed with her, Joseph refused
and declared how could he do such a wicked
thing and sin not just against Potiphar but
against God. (Genesis 39:6-9 NIV)
The motto of a real disciple with an
obedient heart:
Ready to go. Ready to preach. And
Ready to die.
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus
had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality
with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave
up his divine privileges; he took the humble position
of a slave and was born as a human being. When he
appeared in human form, he humbled himself in
obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a
cross. - Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
