EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The CLT 1:1 class was attached to Mityana General Hospital from Monday 19th May 2025 up to 27th
June 2025 in order for the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills regarding their course
and profession.

The hospital laboratory department is headed by Dr.Katende Andrew who welcomed and oriented
the students about the placement.

The hospital laboratory department is divided into 3 different laboratories which all perform
different tests. These include;

1. Main Laboratory
2. ART Laboratory
3. Private Wing Laboratory

All doctors in the following laboratories were hospitable and gave students a chance to learn and a
hands on experience.

Dr.katende drafted a timetable which favoured every student to rotate and acquire knowledge
around each laboratory.

2
MAIN LABORATORY
This is the major laboratory where all the major and minor tests are performed from.

Doctors under this laboratory include;

1.Dr.Katende Andrew

2.Dr.Bwambwale wisely

3.Dr.Kakaire Jimmy

4. Dr. Tebuseeke Mustapha

5.Dr.kyeyune Yusuf

6. Dr. Muzingu victor

The main laboratory is divided into four departments which include;

1. PHLEBOTOMY;
this is where specimens are taken off from, and also received from.

Specimens include; blood,stool,sputum.

And also some quick tests are done at phlebotomy like ;

 Random blood sugar(RBS); a test done to measure blood glucose levels at any time of day,
regardless of when the person last ate. It can be used to screen for or diagnose diabetes.
 Malaria RDT((MRDT); It is a quick and easy-to-use test that detects malaria parasite antigens in
a person's blood, helping to diagnose malaria

2. MICRO-BIOLOGY;
This is where micro biology tests are carried out. Major Tests done in this department
include;

 RPR; a screening test used to detect antibodies that may indicate a syphilis
infection
 HIV test; detects the presence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus that causes
HIV/AIDS.
 BAT;test done to rule out brucellosis in blood
 HepB sAg; a test done to detect the presence of hepatitis virus in blood.
 H.pylori test;used to detect an infection by the Helicobacter pylori
bacteria,which causes peptic ulcer disease.
 Serum crag; a blood test used to detect the presence of cryptococcal antigen,
which is indicative of a cryptococcal infection.

 Urinalysis test; used to detect a range of disorders such as urinary tract

infections,kidney disease and diabetes using urine.
 Widal test; a blood test used to diagnose typhoid and paratyphoid fevers,
which are caused by Salmonella bacteria.
 HCG; a test that detects the presence of the hormone hCG in the body, which is
primarily associated with pregnancy.

3
3.HAEMATOLOGY ;

This is where haematological tests are done. Major tests done in this department include;

 Blood grouping; determines a person's blood type by identifying specific

antigens on the surface of red blood cells
 Cross-matching ;a test performed before a blood transfusion as part of blood
compatibility testing.
4.BIO-CHEMISTRY ;

This is where body chemistry tests are done. Major tests perfomed from this department include;

 Renal Function Tests (RFTs):a group of tests that assess how well the kidneys are
working. These tests measure levels of various substances in the blood and urine, helping to
detect and monitor kidney problems.
 Liver Function Tests (LFTs); are a group of blood tests used to assess the health of the
liver. These tests measure the levels of various enzymes, proteins, and other substances
produced or excreted by the liver, providing insights into its function and potential damage
or disease.
 Lipid profile; is a panel of blood tests used to find abnormalities in blood lipid
concentrations. The results of this test can identify certain genetic diseases and can
determine approximate risks for cardiovascular disease, certain forms of pancreatitis, and
other diseases.
 Complete Blood Count(CBC); tests that provide information about the cells in a person's
blood. The CBC indicates the counts of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, the
concentration of hemoglobin, and the hematocrit.

5.PARASITOLOGY;

This is where parasitological tests are done . Major tests perfomed in this laboratory include;

 Blood smear for malaria parasites; The test involves examining a blood sample spread on a
microscope slide, looking for the presence of malaria parasites.
 Stool analysis: a series of tests performed on a stool sample to help diagnose various
conditions affecting the digestive tract

ANALYSIS ABOUT THE MAIN LABORATORY

All the students gained knowledge and a hands on experience on how to perform all the tests done
in the main laboratory

All the students gained knowledge on how to operate and use the following machines in the main
laboratory;

 Microscope; used to view tiny objects and structures that are not visible to the naked
eye.Students were able to learn how to stain ,focus and report their findings after examining
slides.
 Centrifuge; a device that uses centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities
or particle sizes suspended in a fluid.
 Hot air oven;a dry heat sterilisation method used to free laboratory articles from
microorganisms

ANTI-RETROVIRAL THERAPY LABORATORY(ART)
This is the most highly infectious laboratory which deals with highly contagious samples.
Doctors under this laboratory include;
1.Dr. Nseera Lawrence
2.Dr.Birungi sheillah
3.Dr Tamale desire

Tests done in this laboratory include;

 CRP; C-reactive protein test, measures the amount of CRP in your blood. CRP is a protein
produced by the liver in response to inflammation. The test helps detect inflammation in the
body, which can be caused by various conditions like infections, autoimmune diseases
 HIV viral load;test done to measure the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in
people living with HIV.
 Hep B viral load; test done to measure the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in
people living with Hepatitis B.
 TB LAM; a urine-based test used to help diagnose tuberculosis (TB) in certain populations,
particularly in individuals with HIV.
 CD4 test; also known as a CD4 lymphocyte count, is a blood test that measures the number
of CD4 cells in your blood. CD4 cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a vital role in
the immune system. This test is primarily used to assess immune function in individuals with
HIV, as it indicates how well the immune system is functioning and helps monitor the
progression of HIV infection.
 Gene Xpert; a rapid molecular test, specifically the Xpert MTB/RIF assay, used to detect
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and resistance to rifampicin (RIF), a key first-line TB drug.
 TB microscopy; a diagnostic test for tuberculosis (TB) that involves examining a sputum
sample under a microscope to detect acid-fast bacilli (AFB), the bacteria that cause TB.

ANALYSIS ABOUT THE ART LABORATORY

All the students gained knowledge and a hands on experience on how to perform all the tests done
in the main laboratory

All the students gained knowledge on how to operate and use the following machines in the main
laboratory;

 Microscope; used to view tiny objects and structures that are not visible to the naked eye.
Students were able to learn how to stain, focus and report their findings after examining
slides.For example ZN stained smears.
 Safety cabinet; protecting both lab personnel and the environment from potentially
harmful biological agents.

PRIVATE WING LABORATORY
This is the laboratory accessed by individuals at a certain cost of a test.Normally by individuals who
want to observe their privacy and those who don’t want to wait in long queue.

Doctors under this laboratory include;

1. Dr Flavia
2. Dr.Gorret

Tests done in this laboratory are similar to those done in the other laboratories ,the only difference
is at the private wing laboratory subjects to a fee per a certain test .

A wide range of tests are done in this laboratory and these include;
