Despite having fallen several centuries ago, the Roman Empire continues to be one of the most
celebrated ancient civilizations. From the rise and fall of Julius Caesar to the devastating
destruction of Pompeii, Roman history continues to fascinate ( Ancient Rome ). Roman legends
were so captivating that even in the early 17th century, playwrights like William Shakespeare
explored their iconic use of a republic. In the Roman form of government, citizens elected
tribunes into power and therefore had a say in the way the empire was run ( The Roman Republic
). However, despite this perceived empowerment of the common citizen, there was the constant
question of whether or not the tribunes were truly representative of the people s interests. In the
play Coriolanus, the tribunes use rhetorical devices to express their contempt of Coriolanus as
well as to manipulate the Roman citizens for their selfish desires, despite their supposed role as
the voice of the people. First, Brutus uses alliteration in the scenes between the tribunes to
emphasize his disapproval of Coriolanus. When in private, both tribunes complain about
Coriolanus, with Brutus declaring, Being moved, he will not spare to gird the gods (1.1.292).
By describing Coriolanus as a man so proud he would insult the gods (thus belittling the most
revered figures of Rome), Brutus expresses his low opinion of him. In the alliteration gird the
gods , the hard g sound adds a harsher tone to Brutus s observation, which highlights his disdain
for Coriolanus. The tribunes also make use of double entendre in their words to demonstrate their
opinion of Coriolanus. In their conversations, Brutus exclaims, The present wars devour him! He
is grown / Too proud to be so valiant (1.1.294 295), which can be interpreted in two ways. The first
is that he is devoured, or brimming with pride due to the wars he won, making him more proud
than he deserves. The use of the word devour also connotes a sense of power and desire, which
again shows Brutus s attitude to the way Coriolanus accepts the glory he receives for winning wars.
