Disaster Management Project: Myanmar Earthquake (March 2025)
Introduction
Myanmar experienced a severe earthquake in March 2025 that reached a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter
scale. The epicenter
was located near Naypyidaw. Thousands of families were affected, highlighting the urgent need for effective
disaster management
systems in the region. This project explores the disaster's causes, effects, and response mechanisms.

Causes & Geography
Myanmar lies along the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, particularly the Sagaing
Fault Zone.
The pressure buildup due to tectonic movement eventually released energy in the form of a high-magnitude
earthquake. This region
is seismically active, making preparedness vital for safety and survival.

Impact of the Earthquake
The quake caused significant destruction:
- Over 200 people were killed.
- Thousands were displaced.
- Public infrastructure collapsed.
- Roads, power lines, and hospitals were damaged.
- Education and economic activities were disrupted.
The total estimated financial loss was approximately $1.5 billion, affecting regional development for months.

Response & Mitigation
Emergency response teams acted quickly. Rescue operations were supported by helicopters and military
units.
Relief camps were set up, and essential supplies were distributed. Organizations used drones and GIS
mapping for damage assessment.
Authorities also educated citizens about earthquake drills and the importance of structural safety in buildings.
