The Norman Blumberg Housing Project
On May 3rd when I visited the site where the Norman Blumberg Housing Project once stood, the
air was hauntingly peaceful. I had read about the notoriety of the site during my research, how over
its existence it had become an area of concentrated poverty and crime, but on this day this urban
setting was quiet and calm. On the two square city blocks where a complex of apartmentbuildings
once ruled the landscape, only a single high riseremained among the unchecked wild grass. However,
even in the peacefulness of this day in Sharswood, the looming presence of the infamous Norman
Blumberg Apartments could still be felt. After standing for nearly six decades, the two public
housing high rise buildings that once defined Blumberg Apartments and... Show more content on

As a central part of this analysis, I will be discussing the role Blumberg Apartments played in the
deterioration of Sharswood. I will also be evoking the Pruitt Igoe myth as Blumberg Apartments
shares many similarities with the notorious Pruitt Igoe development. Finally, I will present and
discuss the future transformation of Sharswood as detailed by the Sharswood Blumberg
Neighborhood Transformation Plan. To judge the success or failure of Blumberg Apartments, we
must first analyze the project as it works to provide good housing. Good housing should not just be
regarded as a noun, it should also encompass housing as a verb. The commodity of the house as a
shelter is the noun. This commodity should provide a place for redressing. It should hold the
essential necessities that make for a comfortable and complete home. A place that balances privacy
and social interactions. As a verb, good housing should be a utility that works to enhance one s life
(Turner, 1972). It should be a stepping stone towards opportunity. For Blumberg Apartments in the
grand scheme, both of these facets can be regarded as failures. As the housing projects suffered
through massive deterioration, it failed as a commodity. Residents described how their housing had
stairwells that reeked of urine and dirty diapers, constantly breaking appliances and elevators, and the
frequent sounds of gunshots (Colaneri, 2016). Furthermore, units were found to not meet minimum
size standards and
Essay Mtv And The Madonna Phenomenon

quot; What are the main theories which we have studied so far and how have they affected how you

Looking at videos of fully clothed men , singing about love while bleach blond girls in bikinis
dance around them can be quite confusing at times. Is it possible that these videos are actually
daring to be so blatantly sexist? It is highly doubtful.

The people behind the Music Video industry have quite brilliantly built up an entirely new television
and music empire, complete with it s own stars.
They have managed to use a form much like that of television commercials to glorify their
products which are in this case the singers. There are those stars who are now known more for
their videos than for their music. At times these video stars are not even close to being good
singers but have such strong innovative videos that they manage to become successful without the
possession of talent. These stars must be analyzed not only as people but also as industries. Their
personas have been meticulously constructed and they have been promoted as well as a can of
Coca Cola Classic .

This brings us to the world of Madonna Veronica Louisa Ciconne Penn, or rather Madonna the
most powerful woman in the Music Video world. Madonna is the perfect object of analysis, if one
wishes to look inside the MTV world. She is the subject of numerous discourses. There are both
differing feminist constructions of Madonna as well as Madonna s constructions of herself.
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Speech By Ken Robinson
In this video Ken Robinson touches on three main points. His first point he was talking about the
education system and one s creativity. He gave two anecdotes about kids that showed that they are
willing to take a chance and be creative. If you re not prepared to be wrong, you ll never come up
with anything original. He believes that the educationsystem institutionalizes people, and that people
lose the creativity they had. Ken Robinson s goes onto his second point, How every education
system has the same Hierarchy when it comes to subjects. At the top is math and language arts,
followed by the humantanties, and at the bottom is Arts. He explains how there is a lack of focus
on art and creativity. The reason being is because schoolis to meet the needs of industrialism in the
19th century that needed high math and language arts skills. Art based classes werent view as

Walker Percy The Loss Of The Creature Summary
Walker Percy s essay The Loss of the Creature through relatable hypotheticals points out a problem
in many people s lives. He enlightens readers that people have lost their ability to evaluate
something s worth by themselves, what Percy refers to as their sovereignty. Percy delivers his
message through his essay without most of the technical jargon one would expect. In doing so
the problem he points out seems less of a concept far from our understanding but one that the
regular person can solve. To begin his inquiry of life and sovereignty Percy argues why a person
can t see the Grand Canyon for what it is. Percy tells the story of the famous explorer Garcia
Lopez de Cardenas who discovered the Grand Canyon and was astonished by it. He paints a
beautiful scene of a newly discovered land and then shortly after asks a question that would
confuse readers of its relevance before his essay developed. He asks, Does not one see the same
sight from the Bright Angel Lodge that Cárdenas saw (1)? The obvious answer that most readers
would say is yes but as one reads on Percy argues otherwise. Following up on his question he
attempts to make his point clear by setting the experience of Cardenas discovering the Canyon to
have a value that he labeled P. (1) He argues that when the value of P is shared with millions of
sightseers each of them doesn t receive the same experience of Cardenas but a millionth of it s
worth. By using values to demonstrate worth, Percy says that
John Stuart Mill s Utilitarianism
John Stuart Mill begins the explanation of his version of Utilitarianism by replying to common
misconceptions that people hold regarding the theory, and as a result describes his own theory more
clearly. The main issue that Mill raises is that people misinterpret the word utility as in opposition to
pleasure . However, utility is actually defined as pleasure itself and also the absence of pain. Those
who know anything about the matter, from Epicurus to Bentham, who maintained the theory of
utility meant by it, not something contradistinguished from pleasure, but pleasure itself and the
exemption of pain. (Mill, Utilitarianism, Chapter 2)
Mill continues by explaining that once this misunderstanding is corrected, those that comprehend
utility, or the greatest happiness principle , appreciate that actions are right in proportion as they
tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness (Mill, Chapter
2). By this account, pleasure and the absence of pain are the only things desirable as ends in
themselves; the only inherently good things. Consequently, all other experiences and situations are
merely desirable to the extent that they provide a basis or springboard for such pleasures. However,
it is still important to understand that utilitarianism doesn t simply require people to follow what
makes them happy in a personal sense. Instead, in Mill s theory morality is determined by the
greatest happiness principle: a moral act is that

As mentioned prior, in 1907, Le Châtelier was elected to the French Academy of Sciences, where
most of his work was dedicated to directing his students research work at the Sorbonne and the

his position, and respect given from his colleagues and achievements, he was chosen as a scientific

manufacture of explosive materials and military equipment (his experience within the Franco
Prussian War was a great advantage). This position in the French government allowed him to

School Bullying and the Attempts to Prevent it.
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more
intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others
occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools.
Olwesus (2013) states the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems,
disagreements, and unresolved issues (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of
bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter
before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set
in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When
intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the
gained understanding of the effects.

What effects does bullying have on the bully and the victim?
The Philosophy of Teaching Essay
My Philosophy of Teaching

Philisophical teaching stratigies include the following disciplines, essentialism, existentialism, and
many others. Of these stratigies the philisophicla approaches each include a distinct direction in the
style and type of learning taking place. Lessons should include these philisophical teaching stratigies
within there designed properties. Although all of the stratigies may be able to incorporate all
learning disciplines and learning styles a lesson does not need to contain the entire array of
philisophical stratigies. Informitive lessons may take place without all stratigies invovled.

Progressivivsm also allows for a more dramatic personal hands provacative lessons. lessons taught
in this style offen invoke a curiostiy which benefits the nature of children and their natural thirst
for knowledge. A progressive mindes philosphy allows the child to learn at an accelarated rate
where the child can not only read or hear the information, but experiance it as well. This is evident
in lessons that may relate to specific areas or objects which can be seen on an off campus trip.
Although the idea of learning away from a text is part of the progressive strategy, it is also a part of
perrinialsim.

Perrinialsim uses strategies that critisize other forms and previous methods held by past teachers.
Textbooks often provide information that perrinialist view inconsiquential or soon to be obsolete.
This thought process allows for students to learn a basic fundamental of what should soon to be the
most used part of their knowledge. This style often neglects the large factual data which can be
viewed as unneccesary or unneeded. This definitive use of certain teaching subjects seems to be a
hinderance toa childs overall learning curve. The intentional abbreviation of a broad band of
information can severely limit a students knowladge and capabilities.

Perrinialism is not the only philosiphy to desensitize the basics and the concrete curriculum.

Tao of Pooh Essay
In the Tao of Pooh the author, Benjamin Hoff, uses the from world famous children s book/TV
show character, Winnie the Pooh in order to explain the basics of Taoism. He observed many of the
other various characters before coming to the conclusion that Winnie the Pooh, through his actions,
was the character that he felt would be able to best explain the principles of Taoism. One of the
most important principles of Taoism is the Uncarved Block . The main principle behind the
Uncarved Block is that things in their original state contain their own natural power, a power that is
easily corrupted and lost when simplicity is changed.
Hoff uses the characters of Winnie the Pooh to show how things can be spoiled and lost but he also

Hoff s purpose of writing the Tao of Pooh is to ultimately inform people of Taoism. He aimed to
teach the ways and beliefs of Taoism and he wanted to teach in such a way that would be easy for
everyone to understand and relate to and this goal is why he ultimately choose to use Winnie the
Pooh. Pooh s attitude and simple approach concerning life exemplifies the Taoist lifestyle. Each
individual chapter of the book is used to teach a new principle of the Uncarved Block of Taoism.
Each chapter begins with Winnie the Pooh being told a story and being given an explanation of
how it relates back to Taoism. Hoff used many various Winnie the Pooh stories in his teaching of
the ways of the Taoist, using the arguments that cleverness and knowledge are not really
important. It is also important to note that in each argument he presented it always ended out
working in Pooh s favor in the end. Overall the book is very simple and very easy to understand
and again I belief that Hoff successfully accomplished his main purposes for writing such a book,
however I feel that this text also has many flaws and because of this it should be taken very lightly.
The first and most obvious flaw is that the author, Hoff, is trying to prove that in just about any
situation the principles of Taoism will always guide you along the right path. However the stories he

Immigrants In Australia Essay
Considering the needs of new immigrant students is now a familiar issue for teachers and schools in
Western Australia. As the numbers of immigrants settling in Western Australia continues to grow, so
too do the numbers of immigrant students entering Western Australian high schools. The growing
number of immigrant students in the classroom presents teachers with new and sometimes difficult
challenges. The level to which all immigrant students succeed in high schoolwill obviously influence
their educational and occupational success leading to an economic impact on the host country.

As the numbers of immigrants increase globally, so too do the number of research studies that
discuss the adaptation of immigrants. The majority of these studies focus on adult immigrants and ...

Firstly, there are no published studies that specifically focus on the experiences of this group
adolescent immigrant in Western Australia. Secondly and from my own experience working with
Afrikaans adolescents in a high school in Perth, I have observed that in comparison to other
immigrant students, integration for this particular group of students is apparently more complex.
Finally, following conversations that I have had with Afrikaans immigrants living in Perth, it has
been suggested that the majority of Afrikaans parents are primarily focused on economic integration
and employ a separation strategy as they endeavour to maintain their own cultural identity with little
assimilation into the host society. Their main focus is not on their ability to integrate. Their children,
however, are spending at least seven hours of every day immersed in an Australian education
system and surrounded by peers who are already part of the host society. Immigrant adolescents are
more focused on social integration because of their need to fit in and make friends and this becomes

Louis Xiv s Influence On The World War II
Karl Johnson A Block, History Lisa Feirtag The Sun God Louis XIV is known for his powerful
approach to rule. For example, within foreign policy, pressing the invasion of the Spanish
Netherlands in 1667, boldly deeming it his wife s rightful inheritance. The conflict was named,
The War of Devolution, and lasted a year. France lost, although Louis XIV did not give up, and
engaged in the great Franco Dutch War from 1672 to 1678. During the war, France managed to
acquire more land and the victory promoted France to the status of a dominant power. After all,
Louis XIV was known to France as the Sun King, the most powerful and god like being on earth,
he couldn t stand for defeat. This new dominant status, coupled with Louis XIV s audacious
campaigns to constantly expand territory through the use of military force, positioned France as
an immediate threat to other European nations, and positioned Louis XIV as a looming figure
over all of Europe. Louis XIV thought of war as the sport of Kings, and he put a lot into his
favorite pastime. Louis XIV was born September 5, 1638 in Saint Germaine en Laye, France. He
became king and official leader of 19 million French in 1643 at the age of four years old. Rather
than a scholarly education, Louis XIV was educated in practicality and logic. Louis s first goal as
king was to centralize and rein in total control of France. He did this by establishing reforms that cut
France s deficit, promoted industrial growth, created an organized
The National Labor Relations Act ( Nlra )
North Carolina is an at will state, and this by no means gives any employer the right to act as they
wish in the work place. Certain laws govern the workplace that have to be honored with each and
every employee. One such law is the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). This law was
endorsed in July of 1935 and was modified by both the Taft Hartley amendment in 1947, and
Landrum Griffin amendments in 1959 (George Pozgar, 2012, p, 474). This law is responsible for
stopping and relieving unfair labor practices by employers, their agents, and or organizations. The
NLRA is independent of the Department of Labor, but entrusted to the National Relations Labor
Board (NLB) (Pozgar, 2012, p. 474). To illustrate, in the setting of a hospital, there are two
violations that would certainly grab the focus of the NRLA; discrimination against an employee who
engages in union activity, and retaliation against an employees who file unfair labor practicecharges.
Furthermore, in the face of a strike certain rights of patients come into play to protect the patient and
ensure they continue to receive quality care.
Violation of the National Labor Relations Act The NLRA is entrusted by the NLB, which protects
collective bargaining in the private sector. Some of the activities of the NLRB is to primarily
conduct elections to determine whether or not employees want union representation, and to
investigate and relieve practices that are unfair by employers and unions (Joe Twarog, 2005). When a
