THE HOLY SPIRIT

How to use this curriculum

LOOK UP these verses in your Bible.

KEY VERSES to the lesson.

Book 02 - The Holy Spirit.indd 3 10/3/13 2:26 PM

Yielding to the Holy Spirit and His purpose in our lives will em-
power change within us. Christians who understand His role
in their lives will thrive themselves and become a fountain of
spiritual power for others. The first step to enjoying the benefits
of the Holy Spirit is learning about Him.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

1. He is a person.

He is the third part of the Godhead.

John 14:17 refers to the Holy Spirit as “Him.”
John 15:26 and John 16:8 refer to the Holy Spirit as “He.”
It is important to view the Holy Spirit as a person instead of
a “force” or an “it.” When we view Him as a person, we can
develop a close relationship with Him.

2. He lives within us.

John 14:16-17

3. The Holy Spirit has emotions.

We can grieve the Holy Spirit.

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are

sealed unto the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30)

Grieve means “to make sorrowful.”

“But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore
he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against
them.” (Isaiah 63:10)

In this verse vexed means that the Holy Spirit was displeased.

How does the Holy Spirit help me?

1. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter.

John 14:16, 26; 15:26

He is summoned, or called, to our side to aid and help us. The

Holy Spirit is an aide, an assistant, a counselor, and someone
we can talk to in our time of need.

2. The Holy Spirit reproves us of our sins.

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin,

and of righteousness, and of judgment:” (John 16:8)

Reprove means “to convict, to bring light, or expose”; the Holy

Spirit is the One Who reveals our sins to us. Without His con-
viction we would be controlled by sin.

3. The Holy Spirit empowers us.

Ephesians 3:13-21

Book 02 - The Holy Spirit.indd 5 10/3/13 2:26 PM

Here, Paul asks the Holy Spirit to provide inner strength for the
believers. The challenges we face can seem overwhelming.
The Holy Spirit gives us the power and ability to do what we
cannot humanly do.

4. The Holy Spirit will guide us to truth.

“. . . he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to

your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
(John 14:26)

John 16:13

We need help to understand God’s Word. The Holy Spir-

it teaches us God’s Word by revealing truth. As a light bulb
illuminates a dark room, so the Holy Spirit brings light to the
Word of God.

Luke 12:12

5. The Holy Spirit is our Intercessor.

The Holy Spirit knows our weaknesses. He knows there are

times we are so overcome by circumstances that we don’t
know what we should pray. It is during these times that the
Holy Spirit goes to the Father on our behalf to plead our case.
The Holy Spirit knows how our needs match God’s will before
we do.

I Corinthians 2:10-11; Romans 8:26-27

6. The Holy Spirit is the giver of spiritual gifts.

I Corinthians 12:7-11

At salvation the Holy Spirit gives each of us unique gifts to help

us serve the Lord through the church. As a Christian matures
and serves, he will discover the different gifts the Holy Spirit
has already given him.

What are the evidences of the Holy

Spirit’s influence in my life?

1. The fruit of the Spirit is displayed.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffer-

ing, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance:
against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

The fruit of the Spirit is seen in three ways:

a. INTERNALLY, I experience love, joy, and peace.

b. TOWARD OTHERS, my relationships are filled

with longsuffering, gentleness, and goodness.

c. TOWARD GOD, I respond in faith, meekness,

and temperance.

2. There is a change in my behavior.

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be

filled with the Spirit;” (Ephesians 5:18)

The connection between drunkenness and Spirit-fullness is

that they both affect behavior. Drunkenness will cause uncon-
trolled behavior, while fullness of the Spirit will influence us to
behave in a way that honors God.

Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:5

How can I be filled with the Spirit

of God?
1. Have a desire to be filled.

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul

thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and
thirsty land, where no water is;” (Psalm 63:1)

Before I can be filled with the Spirit, I must become

empty of self.

Luke 11:13

2. Be Word-filled.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all

wisdom . . . .” (Colossians 3:16)

John 15:7

THE HOLY SPIRIT • 6

Book 02 - The Holy Spirit.indd 8 10/3/13 2:26 PM

3. Be patient and consistent.

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done

the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”
(Hebrews 10:36)

II Peter 1:2-10

Being continually filled with the Spirit of God is a process of a

lifetime, not a miracle of a moment.

4. Do not quench or grieve the Holy Spirit.

“Quench not the Spirit.” (I Thessalonians 5:19)

Quench means “to extinguish or put out a fire.” When we ig-

nore or disobey the Holy Spirit, we prevent the Holy Spirit from
working in our lives.

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are

sealed unto the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30)

When we allow anger, bitterness, or any sin to control us, we

grieve the Holy Spirit, thus limiting His work in our lives.
