Universal Human Value and Professional Ethics
Q1. Do you think that human beings are a sum-total of sentiments and
physical aspects – the ‘self’ and the ‘body’? Explain using examples.
Answer:
Yes, human beings are a combination of two parts – the self and the body. The self refers to
our inner part that thinks, feels, decides, and desires. The body is the physical part that interacts
with the outside world.
For example:
1. When we feel hungry, it is a signal from the body. But deciding what, when, and how to
eat is done by the self.
2. If we see a poor person, our eyes (body) see him, but the feeling of compassion or
sympathy arises in the self.
Q2. Distinguish between the activities going on in the self, going on in the
body, and involving both the self and the body. Give two examples of each.
Answer:
There are three types of activities:
1. Activities in the self include thinking, understanding, and feeling. These are mental
activities and happen within us.
Examples: Thinking about a problem, feeling happy or sad.
2. Activities in the body include biological functions like breathing and digestion. These
happen in the physical body.
Examples: Breathing, walking.
3. Activities involving both the self and the body happen when the self decides and the
body performs the action.
Examples: Speaking (self decides what to say, body speaks), writing (self thinks, hand
writes).
Q3. How do we go into conflicts when our activities are not guided by our
natural acceptance?
Answer:
When our actions are not based on our natural acceptance (our inner understanding of what is
right), we feel internal conflict. Natural acceptance includes values like honesty, love, and
peace. If we act against these, we feel uneasy and disturbed inside.
Example:
If we believe that telling the truth is right but we lie to gain something, we feel guilty or
uncomfortable. This is inner conflict – we are doing something different from what we truly
accept as right.
Q4. How does the self enjoy the activities of the body?
Answer:
The self uses the body as an instrument to experience things. When the body performs an
activity, the self enjoys or suffers from it.
Examples:
● When we listen to music, the ears (body) hear the sound, but the enjoyment is felt by the
self.
● When we eat food, the tongue (body) tastes it, but the satisfaction is experienced by the
self.
Q5. How is harmony in an individual possible?
Answer:
Harmony in an individual is possible when there is alignment between what we think, what we
want, and what we do. When our desires, thoughts, and actions are in agreement, we feel
peaceful and happy.
This can be achieved through:
● Right understanding of our needs and behavior.
● Clarity between the needs of the self (like trust, respect) and the needs of the body (like
food, rest).
● Acting in a way that matches our values and beliefs.
Q6. How does the feeling of sanyam ensure health of the body? List two
programs of sanyam.
Answer:
Sanyam means self-control or self-regulation. When a person has sanyam, they manage their
desires and habits properly. This leads to a healthy lifestyle and good health of the body.
How sanyam helps:
● A person with sanyam avoids overeating, harmful habits, and laziness.
● They maintain a proper routine, eat balanced food, and get enough rest.
Two programs of sanyam are:
1. Practicing yoga and physical exercise.
2. Maintaining a balanced diet and regular daily routine.
