Slavery And The Practice Of Slavery
Virgina has differences and similarities when it comes to slave narratives. To explain further, this
is why the details and experiences that these ex slaves gave in describing the institution of
slavery and the practice of slavery are tremendously important because Virginia became a royal
colony, the first in English history. However, the English kings were occupied with affairs at
home, the Virginia house of burgesses was able to continue its functions and won formal
recognition in the late 1630s. Thus, representative government under royal domain was assured.
By 1641, when Sir William Berkeley became governor, the colony was well established and
extended on both sides of the James up to its falls. Three fourths of the European settlers (about
7,500 in 1641) had come as indentured servants or apprentices, but many of them became freemen
and small farmers. In 1641, there were also about 250 Africans (the first had arrived in 1619 on a
Dutch ship), most of whom were indentured servants rather than slaves. The freeholders, together
with the merchant class (from which were descended most of the first families of Virginia ),
controlled the government. Only white males were enfranchised, and property owning qualifications
for voting continued during and after the colonial period. Most of the white settlers were Anglicans,
and during the civil war in England, many well to do Englishmen (mainly Anglicans and supporters
of Charles I, if not actually Cavaliers) came to Virginia.
Essay about The Missile Defense System of the United States
The Missile Defense System of the United States
Abstract
When Ronald Reagan was in the Presidency, he and his staff came up with the idea for a missile
defense system that would defend the country in the event of a nuclear missile attack. This system
was named Star Wars and the basic principal behind it was that it would be a shield that covered all
fifty states. However, government officials soon realized that Reagan s defense system was
impossible to build, so the program was dropped, but the idea to defend the country against a missile
attack stuck around. Today, the U. S. Government is trying to build a new, more realistic missile
defense system. However, not all the problems have been worked out, and the U. S. Government ...

Another one of its missions is to develop and maintain the option to deploy a cost effective,
operationally effective, and Anti Ballistic Missile Treaty compliant system that could protect the
states against a country that may pose a threat. The most important part of this is definitely the
protection of all the states against a missile attack. In order to make a defense system that would
work, the National Missile Defense would need to have a system that meets the missile threat when
it s released, detect a launch of a missile, track it using radars and destroy the warhead above the
atmosphere of earth (National missile defense, 2000).
History
The new missile defense program started in 1993 after the Department of Defense decided to
conduct a review that would select the strategy, force structure, and modernization programs for
America s defense in the post Cold War era. When the U. S. S. R. broke apart, it was decided that
there was not much of a threat from China or the former Soviet Union. However, it was uncertain
how easy it would be for a third world country to come into possession of long range missiles. In
response to their uncertainty, the Defense Department built the National Missile Defense in order to
develop and keep the ability to launch a missile defense if a threat emerged (National missile
defense, 2000).
In 1994, Congress called for a great acceleration in the development of the missile defense system.

The Benefits Of The Middle Class
The shrinking middle class has the attention of the whole nation. The middle class used to be the
biggest American job market of the three financial lots. This has changed and has been an ongoing
issue at hand for quite some time. Middle income jobs are disappearing while the lower class
suffers and the rich thrive with no worries. As the middle classhas continued to shrink, the lower
and upper class have grown in size. Could this be because many are falling into the lower class?
Are people figuring out ways to make more money to be a part of the upper class? The Dictionary
defines the middle class as a class of people intermediate between the classes of higher and lower
social rank or standing. What many don t realize is that there is more to a class than its income. It
can be difficult to determine what level of education and occupation can be considered average.
It is nearly impossible for a family to survive on a $20,000 yearly salary let alone a $55,775 salary
that the Pew Research Center states was the average in 2016 (Elkins). The consensus is that the
upper class continues to get rich and the lower class is slowly improving, but what used to be
considered the backbone, the middle class, will soon cease to exist. Due to the advancement of
technology, middle class jobs are decreasing. This is leaving the middle class at risk for falling
into poverty. There has been a climb in the low and high skill level occupations. If this continues,
many will be forced to work
The White Male Juries By Tom Robinson
Without question, Tom Robinson would be better off today.
He would be able to vote. He would have access to all public accommodations. He could win a seat
in Congress, be appointed to the Supreme Court, he could even be President.
In fact, Tom Robinson could live a life completely unimaginable and unrecognizable to the
characters in Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird . No lynching s. No all white male juries. No
presumption of guilt based on skin color. No state sanctioned discrimination.
Yet, Tom would realize a sad, but undeniable truth that racism is still alive and all too well in this
country, America. He would know it in the economic injustice that has left twenty five percent of
African Americans living in poverty. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instructive words now.
Like Alabama in the 1930s, Texas in the 1950s was a place where separate never meant equal. It
was a place where colored water fountains did not spout brightly colored water as a child might
expect, but stood as symbols of racism, which meant indignity, shame, and humiliation for some and
indifference, false pride, and hate for others.
At my old school, my teachers carefully avoided any mention of race, class, or gender. Like Scout,
I learned those lessons from my family. When Scout comes to her father with questions about human
behavior, he doesn t give her advice on what to say or do. Instead, he tells her that the trick to
understanding another person is to consider things from his or her point of view. For nearly 15
years, that has been a hard thing to conquer. We trust each other to wrestle with complex choices in
the past and present so that they will better understand the social mores of our time. We encourage
them to think critically and independently in much the way Atticus, Scout s father, engages his
children.
Like some people, Scout s teacher misses an opportunity to trust her students with the complexities
of history and human behavior. Each week at Scout s school, there is a current events period where
each student clips an item from a newspaper and shares the contents with the class. In one lesson, a
child, Cecil, shares his current event: Old Adolf Hitler has been
