Forest coverage in the country
Forest Survey of India (FSI), Dehradun, an organiza on under the MoEF&CC carries
out the assessment of forest cover biennially, since 1987 and the findings are
published in India State of Forest Report (ISFR).
As per latest ISFR 2021, the total forest cover of the country is 7,13,789 square km
which is 21.71% of the geographical area of the country.
The forest cover has increased by 1,540 square km between ISFR 2019 and ISFR 2021
assessment.
To protect and improve the forest cover in the country, afforesta on and tree
planta on ac vi es are undertaken by States/UTs. During the last five years, the
amount of Rs. 755.68 Crores has been released for taking up the afforesta on
ac vi es.
The Ministry has also implemented Na onal Afforesta on programme for
regenera on of degraded forest and adjoining areas in the country. Under the
scheme, an amount of Rs. 108.57 crore has been released during the years 2019-20
to 2021-22.
Na onal Afforesta on Programme is now stands merged with Green India Mission.
Afforesta on ac vi es are also taken up under various programmes and schemes of
line Ministry such as Mahatma Gandhi Na onal Rural Employment Guarantee
Scheme, Na onal Bamboo Mission, Sub-Mission on Agroforestry etc.
The Ministry takes various steps to combat forest fires.

the same.

Forest Fire
Highest number of forest fire incidents was reported in Valmiki Tiger Reserve
(VTR-2) forest division.
Tree Cover
Tree Cover: 2,341 sq km i.e. 2.49% of GA
Tree cover of Bihar has increased by 338 sq km i.e 16.87% increase as compared to
the previous assessment reported in ISFR 2019.
Total Forest + Tree Cover = 9721.79 sq km i.e. 10.3% of GA
