ii. Chloroplast: site for photosynthesis.
iii. Ribosome: site for protein synthesis.
Any other corresponding ones. ( 1 mark each)
b. Three differences between diffusion and osmosis
Diffusion Osmosis
Diffusion occurs in solid, gasses Osmosis occurs in liquids medium only.
and liquids.
Differential permeable Permeable membrane required.
membrane not required.
It occurs in living and non living organisms It occurs naturally in living organisms.
Rate of movements of molecules is Rate of movements of molecules is slower.
faster.
(Answers must correspond to score, 1mk each = 3mks.)
2 (i)Diffusion can be defined as the process by which molecules of substances, such
as liquid and gases move randomly from a region of higher concentration to a region of
lower concentration until they are evenly distributed.
(ii)Growth is defined as an irreversible increase in size and mass due to formation of
new protoplasm in the cell.
(iii)Plasmolysis is defined as the outward movement or flow of water from living cells
when the cells are placed in a hypertonic solution.
(iv)Reproduction is the ability of living organisms to produce offspring i.e. new
individuals of their type.
(v)Respiration is the enzymatic breakdown of organic food substances, like glucose,
through a series of chemical reactions in the cell to release energy and produce carbon
(IV) oxide and water as by-products.1mk each = 5mks.
