PROJECT - Proposed Construction of NIC Building at Pallikaranai
Marshland, Velachery, Chennai
1 INTRODUCTION
Pallikaranai Marshland under the Department of Forests, Chennai proposes to construct a
G+1 RC Block-A and Block-B building, Pergola, Curved wall, Terrace garden, Landscape
sections, Elevated Trail at its premises. This document describes the structural design to be
adopted for the detailed design of WATER TANK, RCC WALL & SLAB and are erected
from the basement level. All the components of the structure are in RCC and STEEL.
STAAD pro software is used for modeling and analysis in this project. Limit State Method of
design is used.
The design will aim to achieve
Structural & functional integrity.
Desirable Structural performance under characteristic service design loads.
Resistance to loads due to natural phenomena as well as service requirement. i.e., soil
pressure and water pressure.
Structural durability & maintainability.
1.1 Design Methodology:
The structure will be analyzed and designed using software STAAD.Pro for the loads and
their combinations. The design of some elements will be carried out by either manually or
standardized in house excel sheets.
Limit State Design (LSD) as per IS 800: 2007 is the prevalent method. Design for both
ultimate limit states (strength, stability) and serviceability limit states (deflection, vibration if
any).
Analyse the pergola frame to determine forces (axial, shear, bending moments) in all
members under the design loads. Consider the structural system as a frame or a series of
interconnected member

3 DESIGN PARAMETERS
3.1 Materials of Construction
The Structure is predominantly RCC frame structure with Columns, Steel Beams, used as a
frame or a series of interconnected members.
Concrete:
• Concrete of Grade ranging around M:30 have been used in RCC structural
members.
• Concrete Mix M-15 has been used in filling, plum concrete, leveling courses and
other non- structural items.
• Density of reinforced concrete is assumed as 25.00 KN/cu.m
• Minimum cement content, water cement ratio etc. shall confirm to IS 456:2000
code provisions for durability and strength criteria.
Cement:
Ordinary Portland Cement of grade 43 or higher confirming to IS 8112 and IS 12269 is
specified.
Aggregates:
The sizes of coarse aggregates confirm to IS 383.Nominal maximum size of coarse aggregate
be 20 mm, suitably graded as per the requirement of mix design.
The fine aggregates conform to the specifications of IS 383.
Water:
Water used for construction shall comply with IS 456:2000.
Reinforcement
TMT bars conforming to IS 1786 with fy = 500 N/ sq.mm has been used.
Structural Steel
Structural steel work, if any, shall conform to IS 226 and IS 2062 for Indian steel sections.
Unit of measurement

All units used in analysis and design are SI system.
3.2 Load Combinations
The individual members of the framed structure shall be designed for the worst combination
of loads such as bending moment, axial force, shear force and torsion etc. resulting from the
most critical combinations of loads as specified below. Permissible stresses for different load
combinations shall be taken as per relevant IS codes.
Following load combinations shall be used for analysing the framed structures in STAAD Pro
software:
Factored load Combinations
