Instructions
Make 5 covers of the journal by using different colour paper sheets.
Use the following headings for each page:
1. This is a list of materials we will need
2. This is a picture of my seed
3. I can describe my seed (use your 5 senses)
4. I think or predict my plant will look like this
5. My plant needs the following to grow

Day 1: Planting the Seed (These are the steps I took to plant my seed)
(Give all the steps on one page)
Day 2: Planting the Seed (These are the steps I took to plant my seed & this is what it looked like)
(write each step on a different page)
There are 2 different kinds of the following pages: one to use when the plant is just coming up out of
the dirt and one when the plant really starts to grow:
Day ____ Observation (print as many you need)
You will record the following on each page:
o I can see growth in my plant
o I observe…
o Picture of my plant (when it just starts to grow)
o Weather that day
o I watered my plant today
o Date

IDENTIFY VERTEBRATES AND
INVERTEBRATES

Many different animals share our planet with us. Many are alike, and many are
different. Scientists classify animals based on their similarities. One-way scientists’
group animals is whether or not those animals have a backbone.

Some animals, like dogs, cats, birds, lizards, fish, and even humans have backbones -
Scientists classify backboned animals as vertebrate

Other animals, such as squid, worms, bugs, and clams do not have backbones.
Scientists call these animals invertebrates.

Choose five animals from the list below. Write

the animal’s name, whether it is a vertebrate or
invertebrate, and two important traits in the
spreadsheet. An example has been provided for
you.

Scorpion Fox Spider Octopus Snail Rabbit

Wolf Fish Jellyfish Turtle Beetle Deer Hawk

Animal Vertebrate / Invertebrate Two important traits

1. A rabbit has long ears.

Rabbit Vertebrate
2. A rabbit is a mammal.

Annexure 5.
Which solid can dissolve in water?
• Water (hot and cold)
You Will Need

• Transparent Containers

• Substances to try and dissolve;

sand, sugar, salt, coffee etc

Method

1 Add a teaspoon of whichever solid you are testing to a glass of cold

water and a glass of hot water, stir and observe the difference.
2 Look to see if the solid dissolves in the hot water and cold water and if
one is better than the other.
3
Can you design a chart to record your observation?
The Science Bit

Things like salt, sugar and coffee dissolve in water. They are soluble.
They usually dissolve faster and better in hot water. Pepper and sand
are insoluble, they will not dissolve even in hot water.
Extra information
Everything is made of particles which are always moving. When a solid is
mixed with the right liquid, it forms a solution. This process is called
dissolving.
Two things that affect the speed at which the solid dissolves are temperature
and the size of the grains of the solid. Caster sugar, which is made of fine
particles will dissolve quickly, but bigger sugar particles will take longer. Solids
dissolve faster in hot water as in hot water the water molecules are moving
faster, so bump into the solid more often which increases the rate of
reaction. Annexure no 6.
