DETAILED LESSON PLAN
Grade Level: Grade 9
Subject: Science
Topic: Electromagnetism – Turning Effect of a Current-Carrying Coil
Date: June 30, 2025
Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Learning Competency: Explain how a current-carrying coil in a magnetic
field experiences a turning effect and that the effect is increased by
increasing (a) the number of turns on the coil, (b) the current.
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Describe the interaction between a current-carrying coil and a magnetic
field.
2. Explain how the turning effect on the coil is produced.
3. Analyze how increasing the number of turns or the current affects the
turning effect.
4. Actively participate in a demonstration and group activity.
5. Relate the concept of the turning effect to real-life applications such as
electric motors.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Turning Effect of a Current-Carrying Coil
B. Concepts: Motor effect, electromagnetic force, Lorentz force
(conceptually)
C. Materials:
- AA battery (1.5V)
- Copper wire (insulated, single strand)
- Magnets
- Safety pins or paper clips
- Electrical tape
- PowerPoint presentation

V. ASSIGNMENT
1. Draw and label a diagram showing how a current-carrying coil
experiences a turning effect in a magnetic field.
2. Research: Write a short paragraph on how electric motors are used in
at least three household appliances.
VI. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL (PowerPoint Presentation Outline)
1. Slide 1: Real-World Hook
o Image: Electric fan, toy car, washing machine
o Key idea: Introduce real-world devices using motors
o Prompt: "What do these have in common?"
2. Slide 2: Magnetic Field
o Image: Bar magnet with field lines / iron filings
o Concept: Magnetic fields are invisible forces around magnets
3. Slide 3: Electric Current
o Image: Simple battery and wire circuit diagram
o Concept: Flow of charges, electric current produces magnetic
fields
4. Slide 4: Predict
o Image: Wire placed in magnetic field
o Prompt: Ask students to predict motion of wire
5. Slide 5: Observe
o Animation or video of current-carrying wire moving in field
o Idea: Interaction produces force
6. Slide 6: Turning Effect on a Coil
o Image: Coil in magnetic field with force arrows
o Concept: Opposite forces → turning motion (torque)
7. Slide 7: What Affects the Turning Effect
o Comparison images: More turns vs. fewer, higher vs. lower
current
o Concept: More turns and more current → stronger turning effect
8. Slide 8: Summary Slide
