How to Configure Native MPIO in Microsoft Windows
Server
Objective
This article is provided as a courtesy to assist in configuring native MPIO in Microsoft Windows Server. For official
information, please contact your host OS support vendor.
Environment
Microsoft Windows Server 2019
Microsoft Windows Server 2022
Microsoft Windows Server 2025
Procedure
1. Add LUN paths for your host in the normal method as described in the Provisioning Guide and the Open
Systems Host Attachment Guide.
2. Confirm that you can see the volumes in Disk Management. A server reboot, switch port disable/enble, or
HBA disable/enable might be required for the volumes to appear. Note that you will see a separate disk for
each path, if MPIO is not currently enabled.
3. If you right-click on one of the disks and select properties, you will notice that there is no MPIO tab:
4. Open Server Manager. Select your Server. Click "Manage" and select "Add Roles or Features"
5. Click next until you get to features and select Multipath I/O:
6. Click through until the feature is installed. In some cases a reboot might be required. If not, you may need
to do a refresh from disk management.
7. Open the newly installed MPIO control panel in windows.
8. Click the "Discover Multi-paths" tab.
9. In the "Others" section, select the Hitachi OPEN-V disk and click Add. You should get a success pop-up.
10. Now in Disk Management you should see just one of each LUN no matter the number of paths, instead of
one volume per path.
11. If you right click on the volume and select properties, you should now see an MPIO tab with options and
details about the native MPIO:
