Instructions to the Students:
1. All the questions are compulsory.
2. The level of question/expected answer as per OBE or the CourseOutcome (CO) on
which the question is based is mentioned in front ofthe question.

Q. 1 Solve Any Two of the following.
A) Suppose a class contains 60% girls and 40% boys. Suppose that 30% of the CO1 6
girls have long hair, and 20% of the boys have long hair. A student is chosen
uniformly at random from the class. What is the probability that the chosen
student will have long hair?
B) A pair of dice consisting of a six-sided die and a four-sided die is rolled and CO1 6
the sum is determined. Let the random variable X denote this sum. Find the
sample space, the space of the random variable, and probability density func-
tion of X.
C) You roll two dice. What is the probability of the events: CO1 6
(a) They show the same?
(b) Their sum is seven or eleven?
(c) They have no common factor greater than unity?
Q.2 Solve Any Two of the following.
A) Explain with example the conditions under which the binomial distribution can CO2 6
be used.
B) The University decides to form a committee of 5 members from a list of 20 CO2 6
candidates out of whom 12 are teachers and 8 are students. If the members of
the committee are selected at random, what is the probability that the majority
of the committee members are students?
C) Two cards are drawn from a well shuffled deck of 52 cards. Find the probabili- CO2 6
ty distribution of the number of aces in each of the following case.
a. Successively with replacement
b. Successively without replacement
Q. 3 Solve Any Two of the following.
A) From the following table calculate the coefficient of correlation by Karl CO4 6
Pearson’s method
X 6 2 10 4 8
Y 9 11 ? 8 7
Arithmetic mean of X and Y series are 6 and 8 respectively.
B) The ranks of the same 15 students in two subjects A and 𝐵 are given below; CO4 6
the two numbers within the brackets denoting the ranks of the same student in
A and 𝐵 respectively
(1,10),(2,7),(3,2),(4,6),(5,4),(6,8),(7,3),(8,1),(9,11),(10,15),(11,9),
(12,5),(13,14),(14,12),(15,13).
Use Spearman's formula to find the rank correlation coefficient.
C) Obtain regression equation of Y on X and estimate Y when X=55 from the fol- CO4 6
lowing
X 40 50 38 60 65 50 35
Y 38 60 55 70 60 48 30
Q.4 Solve Any Two of the following.
A) In sample of 400 parts manufactured by a factory, the number of defective CO3 6
parts was found to be 30. The company, however, claimed that almost 5% of
their product is defective. Is the claim tenable?
B) The theory predicts that the proportion of beans in the four groups A, B, C, D CO3 6
should be 9:3:3:1. In an experiment among 1600 beans, the numbers in the
four groups were 882, 313, 287, and 118. Does the experimental result support
the theory? (The table value of chi-square for 3 d.f. at 5% level of significance
is 7.81)
C) Explain with two example why type I error is called as producer’s risk and CO3 6
type II error is called as consumer’s risk.
Q. 5 Solve Any Two of the following.
A) Consider the Markov chain with three states, S={1,2,3}, that has the following CO5 6
transition matrix
1/2 1/4 1/4
P= 1/3 0 2/3
1/2 1/2 0
a. Draw the state transition diagram for this chain.
b. If we know P(X1=1)=P(X1=2)=1/4, find P(X1=3,X2=2,X3=1)
B) A city is served by two cable TV companies, BestTV and CableCast. Due to CO5 6
their aggressive sales tactics, each year 40% of BestTV customers switch to
CableCast; the other 60% of BestTV customers stay with BestTV. On the oth-
er hand, 30% of the CableCast customers switch to Best TV.
1. Draw the state transition diagram and matrix for this markov chain.
2. Suppose that today 1/4 of customers subscribe to BestTV and 3/4 of
customers subscribe to CableCast. After 1 year, what percent subscribe
to each company?
3. Suppose instead that today of 80% of customers subscribe to BestTV
and 20% subscribe to CableCast. After 1 year, what percent subscribe
to each company?
C) By the method of least squares, find a straight line that best fits the following CO5 6
data points.
x 5 4 3 2 1
y 1 2 3 4 5
*** End ***
