Week 1-FUNCTIONS

The document explains the concepts of relations and functions, defining a relation as a set of ordered pairs with a domain and range. It emphasizes that a function is a specific type of relation where each element in the domain corresponds to exactly one element in the range, and it provides examples to illustrate functions and non-functions. Additionally, the document discusses evaluating functions with various examples and highlights the application of functions in modeling real-life situations.

RELATIONS

A relation is any set of ordered

pairs.

Domain of the relation

• the set of all first elements of
the ordered pairs
Range
• the set of all second elements
A function is a relationship
between two (2) sets of
variable, X and Y.

The first set of independent

variables is Domain.

The second set of dependent

variables is Range.
FUNCTIONS
A function is used to describe
how one variable depends on
another.

Independent Variable
• causes or determine;
independent happens first
Dependent Variable
• depends on or relies on
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
• A function is a relation or
rule of correspondence
between two elements
(domain and range) such
that each element in the
domain corresponds to
exactly one element in the
range.
• (Note: All functions are
relation but not all relations
are functions.)

Functions as representation of
real-life situations

Functions can be often be

used to model real-life
situations. Identifying an
appropriate functional
model will lead to a
better understanding of
various phenomena
