As you may already know, French nouns fall into 3 categories, masculine,
feminine and plural. If we want to say ‘my’ in French, we have 3 options,
‘mon’ (m), ‘ma’ (f) and ‘mes’ (pl.). When we work out which one we need we
have to think about which category the noun that follows fits into.
Look at the following examples:

Because ‘cousin’ is a masculine noun,

we need the word ‘mon’

Mon cousin s’appelle Hugo.

Ma cousine s’appelle Marie

Mes cousins s’appellent Alex et Pierre.

Mon, ma ou mes?
Voici ______ grand-père Voici ______ cousins.

Voici ______ tante

Voici _____ oncle.

Voici _______ sœurs.

Voici ______ grand-mère
Main Task
Draw your family tree. Make is as detailed as possible including as many
extended family members as you can, such as cousins and step parents.

Challenge – Write some sentences about your family to tell us their

names. Pay close attention to mon, ma and mes which mean my, and
show if the relative is masculine, feminine or plural (more than one).

If I were Lisa, I might say:

Ma mère s’appelle Marge.

Mon grand-père s’appelle Abraham.
