Solving Word Problems in Work
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
work using constant force, power, gravitational potential
energy, kinetic energy, and elastic potential energy
B. Performance The Learners shall be able to:
Standards
C. Learning The Learners should be able to:
Competencies Identify situations in which work is done and in which no
work is done.
D. Code S8FE-Ic-20
E. Specific Learning The Learners should be able to:
Objectives cite situations where work is being done
solve problems from the situations where work is being
done using the formula for work
show neatness and accuracy in solving problems

IV. PROCEDURES
Routine Prayer, Checking of Attendance
A. Elicit Show pictures of the following:
- a man pushing his car from the street to the sidewalk
- a girl encoding on the computer
- a student reading a book while walking
- a boy lifting a box from the ground to the truck
Ask the learners to identify which of the pictures showed that
there is work done.
Recall the scientific definition of the term work.
B. Engage Choose one picture which shows that work is being done.
Ask” what are the conditions that must be satisfied for a
work to be done on an object?”
C. Explore Using the picture which shows that there is work done, make a
diagram to show the force acting on the body and the
1
displacement by means of arrow.
Let the learners observe the direction of the arrow and the
direction of the force.
Ask the learners to make a mathematical expression for the force
and the displacement.
Work can be expressed mathematically as, W=Fd, or work
is the product of force and displacement or distance.
Work= force x displacement
A man pushes his car from the street to the side by exerting a
force of 500 N. He was able to push his car to 6 meters. How
much work is done by the man in pushing his car? (1st picture)
When force is applied at a certain angle above the
horizontal, still there is work done on the object. The force
and displacement need to be parallel to each other to say
that there is work done on the object. When the applied
force is at an angle above the horizontal, there will be a
component of force that will be parallel to the horizontal
displacement. Thus, work done by the force on the object
can be calculated using the equation, W= Fd cos θ
Harry pulls his luggage with a constant force of 400 N at a
distance of 5 m. If he pulls it at an angle of 300 above the
horizontal, how much work is done on the luggage? (2nd picture)
Look at the picture at the right (3rd picture).
Who/ which do you think is doing work?
Where is the direction of the force? Where is the direction
of the motion of the tire?
Work is also done if you lift an object.
D. Explain Work can be computed by multiplying the mass, acceleration due
to gravity (9.8 m/s2) and the height (distance). W=mgh
If the man can lift the 500-kilogram tire to a 1.5 meter high,
calculate the work done by the man on the tire.
Complete the table below.

E. Elaborate Learners often complain when carrying heavy school bag to
school.
Suggest ways on how to lessen the burden of work for
them.
F. Evaluate Solve the following problems using the formula for work.
2
1. A force of 900 Newton is needed to push a stranded car
along Brooklyn Drive. The mechanic and the driver push
the car 40 meters. How much work is done?
2. A gardener pushes the lawn mower with a force of 10 N at
an angle of 30 θ
3. Below the horizontal. The lawn mower moves 5 m. How
much work is done by the gardener in moving the lawn
mower?
G. Extend DRAW and CHECK
Read the problem below. Draw the situation using force diagram
then show your solution.
______Mr. Bean carries a 200 N suitcase up the three flights of
stairs 10 m high. How much work does Mr. Bean do? ______
_____ How much work is done when a force of 15 N is applied on a
block 3 m vertically at constant speed? ________
INVESTIGATE DAILY WORK WIDGET
___ Observe at least 3 persons going to a gym. Investigate his/ her
amount of work done to run, walk and bike for a given amount of
time at a specified pace.
