Problem 2:

A flat belt is 6 in wide and 1/3 in thick and transmits 15 hp. The center distance is 8 ft.
The driving pulley has 6 in diameter and rotates at 2000 rpm. The driven pulley has 18 in
diameter. The belt weighs 0.035 lb/in3. If the friction coefficient for this successful
transmission was 0.3,
a) find F1 and F2. What is the required pre-tension? What is the maximum stress if the
system is under moderate shock.
b) What is the belt length?
c) If oil spill between pulley and belt and reduces friction coefficient to 0.2, what is F1
and F2. Does the belt slip? For this part the pre tension is the same as before
obviously.

Problem 3:

A 30 hp electric motor rotating at 2000 rpm derives a machine through a multiple V-belt
derive. The driver pulley (sheave) has 4 inch diameter, the driven pulley has a dimeter 25
inch. The center distance between pulleys is 60 inches. The weight per length of the belt
is 0.015 lb/inch. The friction coefficient between belt and pulley is 0.2. Assume a sheave
angle of 18o. . A sample picture of this design is shown in the Figure. This picture has
nothing to do with your problem. It is for visualization.
a) What are the contact angles in the pulleys
b) Find the length of the belt
c) If maximum force in the belt can not be more than 125 lb, how many V belt should be
used in this design. For this design you assume service factor of Ks=1.2 for bending of V
belt over the pulley.

Problem 4:

A pulley system is designed to rotate the air handler of an Airconditioning system. The
motor is installed in a platform which can pivot around point B, The weight of the motor,
pulley and plate system act as a pretension supplier to the belt. This design guarantees
that the tension in the belts are not lost due to thermal expansion of the belt. The weight
of the motor, pulley and plate is 500 lb and its centroid is located at 15 inch from the
pivot B. as shown. Motor is rotating at 2000 rpm and the friction coefficient between
pulley and belt is 0.3. Belt specific weight is 0.2 lb/in3. Belt width is 2 inch and its
thickness is 0.1 in. The radius of both pullies is 5 inches.
a) Find tight and slack forces in the belt (F1 and F2)
b) How much power can be transmitted?
c) Find maximum and minimum pressure on the pulley surface.
