What do you know about these three

Mika, Toddy, and Polo – three happy dogs from Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
Each of them has a different personality. Mika is adventurous,
while Toddy (or Toddynho) is the baby in the family. Toddy has
learned new things with Mika. Polo (or Polinho) has passed
away last year. He was Mika’s father. Polo was calm and sweet.
Their guardian Ciça always posts on Instagram her daily
routine with her pets. For sure, the expression ‘a dog’s life’ will
have another meaning for you after watching their videos on

Lady Astrid Bowie, known as Astrid, is a Pembroke Welsh
Corgi! She was born on December 29, 2020 and was the
last puppy from the litter. Unfortunately, she was the
smallest and weakest, as she was born with "swimming
puppy syndrome", an underdevelopment in her legs. With
a lot of care and love, she is now able to run and destroy

The pet that inspired the book series and film A Street Cat Named Bob has died
aged 14. James Bowen met Bob in 2007 during his battle with drug addiction
when he found the cat abandoned and injured and decided to look after him.
According to Bowen : “It’s as simple as that. He gave me so much more than
companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that I’d
been missing.”
He said the success they found together was “miraculous”, adding: “He’s met
thousands of people, touched millions of lives.
“There’s never been a cat like him. And never will again. I feel like the light has
8 gone out in my life. I will never forget him.”

THE PROS AND CONS OF
OWNING A PET
1. Con: More Living Expenses
When getting a pet, there are the initial costs like a
bed, a crate, grooming items, a collar, a leash, a
litter box, a scratching post, and other
miscellaneous things needed immediately upon
adoption.
Then there are recurring expenses, such as the cost
11
of food, treats, and toys.

THE PROS AND CONS OF
OWNING A PET
2. Con: Care When You’re Away
If you are gone for an extended period, you may
need to find a sitter, boarder, or doggie daycare—all
of which are an added expense.
Having a dog or cat can also put time constraints on
your outings—you will need to return home to
make sure your pal is fed, let outside (if you have a
12
dog), and checked on regularly.

THE PROS AND CONS OF
OWNING A PET
3. Con: Time Consumption
Some cats and dogs might be independent, but they
still require your time for feeding, training,
exercising, and grooming. A more dependent breed
or a strongly attached pet could require even more
of your attention.
Bringing an animal into your family is almost like
13
19 bringing a child into the equation.
THE PROS AND CONS OF
OWNING A PET
4. Con: Health Care Costs
There is always the chance that your pet could get
hurt or sick, and veterinary treatment can be
expensive. You also need to plan for annual exam
fees and the cost of preventive care, like vaccines
[…].
Besides routine veterinarian care, there’s also the
chance that you will have to pay for emergency care

at some point in your pet’s life.

THE PROS AND CONS OF
OWNING A PET
1. Pro: Unconditional Love and
Companionship
Pets love us unconditionally, and that’s priceless.
There’s nothing like coming home every day to a
four-legged family member who’s thrilled to see
you.
It’s also difficult to put a price tag on their constant
companionship. […] Not to mention, the

health and overall well-being.

OWNING A PET
2. Pro: Home Safety
Vocal pets can alert you to strangers or possible
suspicious activity outside your home, providing
some added security. If you live alone, having the
company of a four-legged friend is also an added

3. Pro: Built-In Icebreaker
Pets are usually not afraid to be the first to say
hello. [ …] Being out and about with your pet
could make it easier to meet your neighbors and
other new people.
Even when your pet isn’t around, they can still
make for a wonderful conversation starter or
topic in general. The topic of “pets” is fairly
18
19
universal, and it’s something that many people
can relate to. It’s a subject matter that people
feel comfortable discussing with others.

4. Pro: Someone to Nurture
[…]
If you don’t have any human children but are
considering them one day, making a four-legged
addition to your family could even provide some
practice in caring for a dependent.
Not to mention, pet parenting can be rewarding
and enjoyable for those who don’t want any
children of their own.
