GIVE REASONS - (India - Physical Divisions)

The rivers of the Southern plateau are smaller than those in the Northern plains due to a lack of glaciers for year-round water supply. The Northern Plains are densely populated because their fertile alluvial soil supports agriculture. The Ganga basin is termed the food bowl of India due to its high production of staple crops, while the Shivalik region faces landslides from deforestation and soil erosion.

GIVE REASONS : - (India - Physical Divisions)

1) The rivers of the Southern plateau are not as big as those flowing through the

Northern plains. Why ?

There are no glaciers or snow covered mountains to provide these rivers with water

throughout the year. These rivers depend solely on the monsoon rains.

2) The Northern Plains are densely populated. Why ?

The alluvium brought by the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and their tributaries

over millions of years has deposited in this plain and has made it very fertile. That is

why they are densely populated.

3) Ganga basin is called the food bowl of India. Why ?

Since the Ganga basin produces a large quantity of food crops like rice, wheat,

sugarcane and jute, it is called the food bowl of India.

4) The Shivalik region is prone to landslides. Why ?

Large - scale cutting down of trees for construction and fuel has led to heavy soil

erosion. Because of this, landslides occur frequently in this region.
