Major Indian Bank PO/Clerk Exams (2023–2025):
Syllabus, Stages, Frequency, Cut-offs
Below is a comprehensive guide to key Indian banking exams (SBI and IBPS), covering each exam’s subjects/
syllabus, stages, exam frequency, and recent cut-off trends. Each section details the Prelims and Mains
syllabus breakdown, exam phases, how often the exam is held, and category-wise cut-off scores (as per
2023–2025 data).
SBI PO (State Bank of India – Probationary Officer)
     • Syllabus (Subjects):
     • Prelims: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, English Language 1 . Quant topics include
arithmetic (percentages, profit/loss, ratio-proportion, time & work, simple/compound interest, etc.)
and number/series problems 2 . Reasoning topics include puzzles, seating arrangements,
syllogisms, coding-decoding, inequalities, blood relations, etc. English covers reading
comprehension, cloze tests, error-spotting, grammar and vocabulary.
     • Mains: Objective sections in Data Analysis & Interpretation, Reasoning & Computer Aptitude,
General/Banking Awareness, English Language 3 . Descriptive English (essay & letter) is also
tested (50 marks). Computer knowledge (basic hardware/software, internet, MS Office, networking)
is integrated into reasoning/GA. GA includes current banking/finance news and static GK (banking
       terms, RBI, budget).
     • Exam Stages: Preliminary exam (online objective test), Main exam (online objective + descriptive),
followed by a Group Discussion (20 marks) and Interview (30 marks) 3 . Final selection also requires
passing a Language Proficiency Test in the official language of the State (if not already known).
     • Frequency: Held annually (once a year). The SBI careers website notes an “annual recruitment
exercise” for PO, usually advertised around April/September 4 .
     • Cut-off Trends: Cutoffs are published stage-wise by category. For example, SBI PO Prelims 2024 (out
       of 100) had general-category cutoffs ~61.75 (UR) 5 ; in 2023 it was ~59.25 6 . SBI PO Mains cutoffs
       (out of 250) in 2024 were very high (UR ~87.50 7 ), vs. ~70 in 2023 8 . Final (combined mains+GD/
       interview) cutoffs (out of 100) for UR were ~46.24 (2024) and ~44.60 (2023) 9 10 . Lower-category
cutoffs are proportionally less. (Interview “qualifying” cutoffs were typically ~17–20 out of 50 11 .)
SBI Clerk (State Bank of India – Clerk/Junior Associate)
     • Syllabus (Subjects):
     • Prelims: English Language, Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability 12 (100 questions total, 1 hour).
English includes comprehension, grammar, cloze tests, etc. Numerical covers arithmetic,
simplification, data sufficiency. Reasoning includes puzzles, seating, inequality, syllogism, etc.
     • Mains: General/Financial Awareness (static GK and current affairs focused on banking/economy),
General English, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning & Computer Aptitude 13 (190 Q, 200 marks,
160 min). Computer Aptitude (basics of computers, MS Office, internet) is combined with Reasoning.
                                                     1
Quantitative Aptitude includes data interpretation (charts, graphs) and higher arithmetic. English
similar to Prelims plus vocabulary and descriptive.
   • Exam Stages: Prelims (objective) → Mains (objective) → Language Proficiency Test (local language,
if required). There is no interview. The Prelims qualifying marks are not counted in final merit 13 ,
only Mains marks determine selection. Final merit lists are prepared State-wise.
   • Frequency: Conducted annually by SBI (typically one recruitment cycle per year).
   • Cut-off Trends: SBI Clerk cutoffs vary by state. For Prelims 2024 (state-wise, general category)
cutoffs ranged roughly 51–73. For example, AP ~68.75, Karnataka ~72.5, UP ~61.75, Telangana ~60,
     West Bengal ~61.25 14 15 . Mains 2024 general cutoffs were higher, around 70–89 (e.g. Tamil Nadu
     ~89, Kerala ~80, Uttarakhand ~64.75) 16 17 . In 2023 Prelims, general cutoffs spanned ~41
(Arunachal) to ~77 (Odisha) 18 . Mains 2023 general cutoffs were ~80+ in many states. Cut-offs
depend heavily on difficulty and vacancies; candidates must clear sectional and overall cutoffs each
     stage.
IBPS PO (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection – Probationary
Officer/Management Trainee)
   • Syllabus (Subjects):
   • Prelims: Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language 19 (100 Q total). Quant
covers simplification, profit/loss, ratios, work & time, speed & distance, basic algebra/geometry/
number systems. Reasoning covers puzzles, seating, coding-decoding, inequalities, blood relations,
syllogism, logical reasoning. English covers reading comprehensions, cloze test, para jumbles, error-

Budget). Quantitative includes charts/graphs (data interpretation), number problems, higher math.
English includes comprehension and grammar, vocabulary, with 2 descriptive tasks.
   • Exam Stages: Three phases – Prelims (online objective, qualifying), Mains (online
objective+descriptive, scoring), and Interview 20 . Local language proficiency (if any) may be a post-
     selection criterion for some banks.
   • Frequency: Annually. IBPS conducts the PO exam once a year (e.g. CRP PO/MT XIV in 2024 and XV in
2025). The 2025 exam was the 15th edition, and IBPS explicitly notes it occurs yearly 21 .
   • Cut-off Trends: IBPS releases stage-wise category cutoffs. In 2024 Prelims, Gen/OBC/EWS cut-offs
     were ~48.50 22 (all similar), SC ~48, ST ~41. In 2023 Prelims, Gen/OBC/EWS ~54.25, SC ~49.50, ST
     ~43 23 . Mains 2023 (out of 225) had Gen ~63, OBC ~62.25, EWS ~61, SC ~50.25, ST ~41 24 . Mains
2024 data not listed above, but likely slightly lower due to easier papers. The final (combined
mains+interview) IBPS PO cutoffs (out of 100) in 2023 for General was ~43.47 (minimum) 25 .
Sectional cutoffs also apply (e.g. Prelims sectional cutoffs around 6–11 marks 26 27 ).
IBPS Clerk (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection – Clerk/Office
Assistant)
   • Syllabus (Subjects):
                                                   2

are similar to IBPS PO Prelims (reading comp, grammar; puzzles, seating; arithmetic fundamentals).
   • Mains: Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, General/Financial Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude,
English Language 29 (190 Q, 200 marks). Computer aptitude covers the same basics as above. GA
is banking/current events. English and Reasoning topics as usual. Descriptive writing is generally not
     part of IBPS Clerk.
   • Exam Stages: Two phases – Prelims and Mains. (There is no interview for clerks.) A Language
Proficiency Test in the local language may be required after selection if not already studied 30 .
Final merit is based on Mains scores alone.
   • Frequency: Annually (IBPS conducts one Clerk recruitment cycle per year).
   • Cut-off Trends: IBPS publishes state-wise cutoffs. In 2024 Prelims (score out of 100), general-
category cutoffs varied widely by state 31 32 . For example, Andhra Pradesh ~77.5, Assam ~83.75,
UP ~79, West Bengal ~87.75 33 34 . (Some regions like Goa and Sikkim were much lower.) In 2023,
many state cutoffs were similarly in the 70s–80s. Mains cutoffs (out of 100) in 2024 ranged roughly
~55–70; for instance, West Bengal ~69.13 (highest) and Mizoram ~48 (lowest, Gen category) 35 .
(Exact state-wise scores were released in results; IBPS Clerk 2024 final cutoffs are high but slightly
     eased due to larger vacancies.)
IBPS RRB Officer (Scale I) – PO Exam (Institute of Banking Personnel
Selection – RRB)

   • Prelims: Reasoning Ability and Numerical Ability 36 (40 Q each, total 80 Q). Reasoning topics
include puzzles, seating, blood relations, inequalities, coding-decoding, etc. Numerical covers
arithmetic topics (speed/time, work, ratios, number systems). (Unlike IBPS PO, there is no English
     section in RRB PO prelims.)
   • Mains: Reasoning (with Computer Awareness sub-section), General Awareness (Banking/
     Financial), Numerical Ability/Data Interpretation, English/Hindi Language 37 . Each is 40 Q.
Computer (fundamentals, MS Office, Internet) is a separate 40-Q section. GA includes banking terms
and current events. English covers reading and grammar. Descriptive writing is not required.
   • Exam Stages: Prelims → Mains → Interview. (Mains + Interview final merit 80:20 ratio.) No separate
language test is mentioned. All exams are online, bilingual (except English section).
   • Frequency: Annually (IBPS RRB recruitment is once a year for Officer Scale I).
   • Cut-off Trends: IBPS releases state-wise cutoffs (prelims out of 80, mains out of 200). For example,
IBPS RRB PO Prelims 2024 cutoffs (Gen) ranged roughly 38.50 to 61.75: e.g. Haryana ~61.75,
Telangana ~20.50 38 . (Very low cutoffs in some states reflect fewer applicants.) Mains 2024 cutoffs
     (Gen, out of 200) were around ~58–69 in examples: e.g. Assam ~68.63, Andhra ~58.06 39 . (These
     vary widely by state/region.) The final combined cutoff scores are released but were not listed above;
generally, clearing mains and interview cutoffs yields final selection.
IBPS RRB Office Assistant – Clerk Exam (Institute of Banking
Personnel Selection – RRB)
   • Syllabus (Subjects): (Essentially the same subjects as RRB PO and IBPS Clerk.)
   • Prelims: Reasoning and Numerical Ability 40 (40 Q each). Reasoning and numerical topics similar

                                                   3
          • Mains: Reasoning, General Awareness, Numerical Ability, English/Hindi Language, Computer
Knowledge 41 . Each 40 Q. GA focuses on banking and general news; Computer includes basics of

RBI Assistant (Reserve Bank of India – Assistant)
          • Syllabus (Subjects):
          • Prelims: English Language (30 Q), Reasoning Ability (35 Q), Numerical Ability (35 Q) 45 (100 Q, 1

arithmetic like speed, distance, ages, simplification).
          • Mains: English Language (40 Q), Reasoning Ability (40 Q), Quantitative Aptitude (40 Q), General
            Awareness (40 Q), Computer Knowledge (40 Q) 46 (200 Q, 135 min). Computer Aptitude here is a

current affairs (national/international), banking awareness (RBI and financial systems) 48 . English
            and Reasoning topics as usual.
          • Exam Stages: Prelims → Mains → Language Proficiency Test (LPT) (local language). RBIspecifically
conducts a medium-language test; failure to pass LPT disqualifies the candidate 49 . There is no
interview. Final merit is based on Mains (plus local language fluency).
          • Frequency: Annually (RBI Assistant is typically held once per year).
          • Cut-off Trends: RBI Assistant has extremely high cut-offs. Based on past data (2019), General-
