1. SCOPE:
This specification is applicable to certain grades of low alloy steel forgings, bar, or
mechanical tubing required to meet NACE Standards for Hydrogen Sulfide (H 2S).
Service and to comply with API-6A.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS:
API Specification 6A 21st Ed.

3. MATERIAL GRADES:
AISI 4130/4140/4145
AISI 8630/8640
Modified low alloy steel versions with a maximum carbon content of 0.45 %.

4. HEAT TREATMENT SEQUENCES:

Heat treat sequences for AISI 4130, AISI 8630 and modified low alloy steel grades with
a maximum carbon content of 0.35 % as follows:
1. Heat to normalizing temperature of 1625 - 1700F. Hold at temperature for a
minimum of 30 minutes per inch of thickness, as measured by the Equivalent
Round (ER) of the part.
2. Cool in air or protective atmosphere as required.
3. Heat to austenitizing temperature of 1525 - 1600F. Hold at temperature for a
minimum of 30 minutes per inch of thickness, as measured by the ER of the part.
4. Quench in one of the following media (depending on part geometry and section
size):
a. If quenched in water, the temperature of the quenching shall not exceed 100F
(38C) at the start of the quench, nor exceed 120F (49C) at the completion
b. If quenched in polymer (acts as a synthetic oil) the operating temperature range
recommended by the manufacturer shall be followed.
5. Temper at 1025F minimum. Time at temperature shall be a minimum of one hour
per inch of thickness. Thickness is as measured by ER of the part.

Heat treat sequences for AISI 4140, 4142, 8640 and modified low alloy steel grades
with carbon content of 0.36 % through 0.45 % as follows:
1. Heat to normalizing temperature of 1575 - 1675F. Hold at temperature for a
minimum of 30 minutes per inch of thickness, as measured by the ER of the part.
2. Cool in air or protective atmosphere as required

3. Heat to austenizing temperature of 1500- 1600F. Hold at temperature for a

minimum of 30 minutes per inch of thickness, as measured by ER of the part.
4. Quench in one of the following media (depending on part geometry and section
size):
a. If quenched in oil, the temperature of the oil-quenching medium shall not
exceed 100o F at the start of the quench.
b. If quenched in polymer (acts as a synthetic oil), the operating temperature range
recommended by the manufacturer shall be followed.
c. Water quenching of these materials is not permitted.
5. Temper at 1025F minimum. Time at temperature shall be a minimum of one hour
per inch of thickness. Thickness is as measured by ER of the part.

5. HEAT SINK FOR API-6A PSL 4 PARTS:

Time at temperature and temperature level for PSL 4 parts shall be determined by
using a heat sink made of the same alloy type as the parts. The ER of the heat sink
shall be greater than or equal to the largest ER of any single body, bonnet, or flange in
a heat treatment load.
As an alternative, a production body, bonnet or flange may serve as a heat sink. The
temperature-sensing tip of the thermocouple shall be embedded in the part or heat
sinks and no closer than one inch to any external or internal surface.

6. HEAT TREATING EQUIPMENT CALIBRATION:

Heat-treating operations shall be performed in batch or continuous type furnaces that
has been calibrated and surveyed.

7. FURNACE LOADING:
Material shall be loaded in the furnace such that the presence of one or part does not
adversely affect the heat-treating response of any other within the same heat
treatment load.
There shall be no bundling or stacking of material.

8. END PROPERTIES REQUIRED:

Surface hardness to be 274 - 331 HB (29 - 35 HRC) for sections with an ER less than or
equal to 6" and 269 - 331 HB (28 - 35 HRC) for an ER greater than 6".

NOTE: Some material specifications may allow surface hardness as high as 341 HB (36
HRC).

9. REMARKS:
All forgings must be normalized, quenched and tempered to obtain the specified
hardness range. Bar stock or tubular items, which are purchased as annealed or
normalized, do not require re-normalization. In addition, bar stock 4” (101.6mm) or
under in diameter need not be normalized. The purchase order must identify material
not requiring normalization.

10. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS FOR HEAT TREATMENT TRACEABILITY :

All material heat treated to this specification shall adhere to the following
requirements:
1. Chemistry of material must be available to heat treated prior to heat treatment.
2. Any prior heat treatment must be stated to heat treated.
3. Material to be heat-treated must be traceable to an identifier (e.g. heat number).
This Identifier must be referenced on all heat treat certifications. A system must be
established to identify individual furnace loads.
4. All pertinent information including furnace times, temperatures and quenching
must be included in the certified record of heat treatment.
5. Where applicable, and when so stated, unique identifiers shall be referenced.
6. Failure to adhere to any of the above requirements shall be cause for rejection of
the effected part.
7. Furnace charts must be furnished for PSL 4 material.
