     1.How do the rivers make the northern plains fertile?
 Ans: The Northern Plains are made fertile by the rivers flowing through them. The rivers carry
 soil, small pieces of rocks and silt, and deposit them in the plains. This fine soil/silt is called
 alluvium, which makes the plains very fertile for growing different crops.
    2. What are oases?
Ans: Oases are the areas in deserts where water is found and plants and trees grow.
 3. Name any two states that are located in the desert region of India.
Ans: Two states located in the desert region of India are Rajasthan and Gujarat.
4. What do you know about the Eastern Coastal plains of India?
Ans: a. The Eastern Coastal Plains of India stretch from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu.
     b. Important rivers of southern India, such as Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri, flow
         into the Bay of Bengal through the Eastern Coastal Plains.
 5. Briefly write about the islands of India.
Ans: a. India has two islands, namely, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands.
     b. These are located in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, respectively.
     c. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have thick forests and sparse population.
     d. The Lakshadweep Islands are made up of a hard substance formed from the skeletons of
         small sea creatures called corals. Hence, these islands are also called coral islands.
     e. Fishing is the main occupation in these islands. Coconut and rice are the main crops
          cultivated in these islands.
      f. The capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is Port Blair and the capital of Lakshadweep
         Islands is Kavaratti. Tourism is a major industry in these islands.

Ans: Solar power can be easily tapped in the desert areas using solar panels because of a
      combination of the following factors—
      a. The deserts have very scanty rainfall,
      b. There is very little cloud formation .
      c. The Sun usually shines bright throughout the year. So, solar energy is available all the
        year round.
