Neighborhood Features Project Each student submits one typed assessment based on neighborhood
features, using the grid on the following page to document data collected. The neighborhood or
community should be focused on the town/city where the clinical rotation is taking place. Data is based
on the student’s own observations, and info gathered by interviews and possibly secondary data sources
online, in documents, etc. .
Note: Students may use up to 3 hours of clinical time to conduct a windshield survey and to contact
pertinent community informants/stakeholders to gather data for this project. While each student
conducts their own assessment, students should not drive or walk alone when gathering data to ensure
safe driving and practices.
The two-column grid provides a way to document features observed within the
neighborhood/community that can impact health in either positive or negative ways (Column 1).
Column 2 includes the possible impacts that can occur as a result of that feature. For example: Feature:
Living near a freeway, or road with lots of traffic; Potential Health Impact: Negative: Asthma from diesel
pollution; noise disturbs sleep; accidents, etc; Positive: access to employment opportunities, stores, etc.
Remember that Features can include a large variety of factors from what you have learned about social
determinants of health. Please use the grid to list and describe 10 examples of features and their
resulting potential impacts. Give rich details and examples, and most importantly tell me how the
feature can lead to not only immediate but also longer term health consequences (positive and/or
negative). See example on grid- the more depth, the better the score.
In addition, please answer one of the questions below. Please include the question and answer, and
attach it as one document to the community Assessment grid. The question is worth 25 points so please
ensure that your answer is rich and thorough, composed of at least several meaningful paragraphs. Brief
yes/no answers with a line or two would not be considered sufficient. Answers should all be in full
sentences, using proper grammar.
1. In general, are resources and/or established coalitions readily available and accessible to populations
living within the neighborhood/community? Why or why not? Give examples and validate your reasons
for answering the way you did, and then please use a reference/citation to validate how certain
resources can impact long term health in general (ie: does having a dept of health impact outcomes? -
do not use this example).
2. What do you consider the three most serious features potentially impacting health in the
neighborhood or community that you worked in? Please validate your reasons for selecting these three
choices, and expand upon each of the three features, and their possible health (or other social) impacts,
and use at least one reference/citation to validate your opinion (ie: similar trends seen elsewhere in the
state/country/world).
3. Of the features listed on the grid, select one feature and its impact on health, and compare your
finding to findings at the state, national and global level. Be sure to include all three levels. (an example
may be air pollution; or crime rates- please do not use these examples). Include at least one
references/citation.
Grading: One Assessment is handed in per student and is graded based on 100 points as follows:

Column 1 (Features) and Column 2 (Impacts): 35 points each
Columns 1 and 2 are awarded points based on how rich, relevant, appropriate, and meaningful the items
are in each column; Also, how well the feature matches the potential impact. Pictures are a plus.
