SCHOOLS DIVISION OF CANLAON CITY
VOLCANIC ERRUPTION
December 9, 2024
NARRATIVE REPORT
An explosive eruption occurred at the summit vent of Kanlaon
Volcano at 3:03 PM in the afternoon. The eruption produced a
voluminous plume that rapidly rose to about 3km above the
vent and drifted west-southwest. Pyroclastic density currents
descended the slopes on the general southeastern edifice
which caused fear from the residents nearby. Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
immediately raised the alert level status of Mt. Kanlaon
Volcano.
While the eruption was on-going emergency protocols,
previously rehearsed during disaster preparedness drills, were
activated. Teachers and other school personnel took charge of
immediate distribution of facemasks and guiding students to
safe areas, ensuring order and minimizing panic. Parents and
guardians also rushed to fetch their students and instructed to
go home immediately. Schools within the affected radius were
notified, and classes were suspended to ensure the safety of
students and teachers. After securing that no learners were left
at the vicinity of the school the teachers & school personnel
also clear the area. Fortunately, there were no casualties in
Masulog ES and no damages reported in our school as well.
Local government units (LGUs), in coordination with City
Disaster Risk Reduction Management offices and other
barangay responders provided immediate transportation and
facilitated the evacuation of schools in high-risk areas.
Emergency supplies, including masks to protect against
inhaling ash due to ashfall, were distributed. Executive Order
No. 86 was issued also by the Office the City Mayor declaring
the suspension of classes to both public and private and other
series of announcements to ensure the safety of the residents
of Canlaon City.
ADM ACTIVITIES DURING THE SUSPENSION OF CLASSES DUE TO
VOLCANIC ERRUPTION
Ensuring that learning will not be interrupted despite the
suspension of classes, such as in the aftermath of a volcanic
eruption and other natural disasters, learning automatically
shifted to Alternative Delivery Mode of Learning. Details below
is provided as to how this was achieved, with a focus on
monitoring learners’ progress through independent learning
methods.
Distribution of Self Learning Materials, Activity
Worksheets
● Learning modules and activity worksheets was distributed
to students earlier before the start of another quarter
prioritizing students living in areas with limited access to
technology or the internet anticipating that if there are
class suspensions/interruption learning must continue.
Modules contains essential competencies aligned with the
curriculum during a specific quarter and were designed for
independent study.
Monitoring Learners' Progress in Independent
Learning
● Effective monitoring was essential to ensure students
remained engaged and made improvement in their
studies despite the lack of physical classes. Parents or
guardians were instructed on their role in facilitating and
assisting their students independent learning at home.
Regular communication between teachers and parents
thru group chats and other means of communication allow
teachers to gather insights into students’ learning
conditions and challenges on alternative delivery mode of
learning.
