Neither was the big facelift of 1975. The
grumbles about raised suspension to suit US
safety regulations and the iffy effects it had on
handling were justified, but many owners have
found a way to eliminate the pitfalls. As for the
styling, I happen to think British Leyland did
a decent job of tweaking it. The revised Midget’s
rubber lips looked a tad gormless to my eyes,
but Abingdon managed to do a more cohesive
job with the MGB’s neat polyurethane bumpers.
Regardless, half a million MGBs rolled off the line

Then there came the problem of sticking
calipers. When pad materials run low and the
caliper pistons have therefore been at the
end of their travel for a long period, it can be
difficult to compress the pistons back into their
cylinders, particularly if corrosion has occurred.
The nearside one was a tough squeeze for my

THE EXPLAINER
When it comes to cleaning and restoring metal surfaces, one technique does not, unfortunately,
rule them all. All metals are different in hardness, chemistry and reactivity to certain chemicals, and
the contamination they carry may require further alternate solutions to break down and remove
from the surface safely.
Chrome, for example is extraordinarily hard – a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale – so it can potentially
take some pretty aggressive cleaning, as opposed to aluminium (2.5), which will scratch if abraded
with something like steel wool (4.5).
Then there’s reactivity. Aluminium turns milky when exposed to strong alkaline chemicals.
One of these is ammonia, and whilst a famous metal polish advertises itself as suitable for
Brass aluminium cleaning, it also contains ammonium hydroxide - so you are taking a risk using it on such
