Iloilo City, coupled with the rising interest in automated solutions for pet care, understanding the
perceptions and attitudes of dog owners towards these technological advancements becomes
crucial.

Automatic pet feeders with sensors offer benefits such as portion control, scheduling
flexibility, and remote monitoring, addressing common concerns related to pet nutrition and
feeding routines, particularly when owners are away from home. Despite the potential
advantages, there is a notable research gap regarding the specific perspective of dog owners in
Iloilo City on this matter.

Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by exploring factors such as awareness,
perceptions, and attitudes among dog owners in the region. By shedding light on the viewpoint
of this demographic, the research aims to contribute both theoretically, by adding to the body of
knowledge on pet care and technology adoption, and practically, by informing product

pet dogs?

3. What is the purpose of Automatic pet food feeder with sensor to the convenience of Dogs and
Dog pet owners?

4. What are the benefits of Automatic pet food feeder with sensor to the Dog pet owners and Pet
dogs?

1.3 THEORETICAL

This research is in association with the theory of Rachel Escott that Automated Pet
Feeder can lessen the worries of the pet owners and aid them in feeding their pets without their
actual presence. In the prototype used by Koley and his companions for their study, they utilize it
with the ATmega32 microcontroller, crafted by Atmel Corporation and now part of Microchip
Technology. Provided with power-saving modes and supporting various communication
protocols, the ATmega32 finds applications across a broad range, from industrial automation to
IoT devices, solidifying its position as a cornerstone in the area of embedded systems
development. Its purpose is to solve the issue of providing water and food to all pet species when
their owners are away from home, such as in a lockdown scenario. Prof Dr Hemanth Kumar B M
and associates suggests a prerecorded voice via speaker to signify the pet feeding. Armed with an
ultrasonic sensor for pet detection, that activates the camera connected to the PC in order to
collect and analyze the pet's image.
The DC motor will then dispense appropriate amount of food according to the pet’s
requirements. It also features a low battery indicator, vibrant color options, and sensory alerts,
with dog training features, facial recognition, and personalized components. Furthermore, it
offers playful interaction for pets by shooting food in the air. On the other hand, Encik A with his
comrades utilize a proximity sensor connected to an Arduino for the pet feeder to dispense
prearranged amount of food at a scheduled time. It can be controlled by the proximity sensor in
the Arduino. It dispenses the right amount of food when a pet’s proximity or motion is detected
by the sensor. This technology ensures balanced meals on times, without owner’s presence.
According to M.K. Razali with his companions in their study, the desktop feeder program
is a software installed in computer to manage automated animal feeding systems, which can
facilitate the feeding schedule, remote access, and monitoring. They also suggests a large and
sturdy container to ensure stability and food security, to lessen the risk of food wastage.
However, a shared meal may lead to the pets taking over one another’s meal, as the feeder don’t
offer a way to monitor which pet is eating which meal. Addressing the issue of the food feeders’
dependency on power sources, M. K. Razali’s team also propose a backup power option with the
ability to connect to an external power source, or use reusable batteries, to ensure that the feeder
can function even in power outages, or when the primary source is unavailable. Moreover, Ekta
Jain and associates, states that an automatic salt dispenser and a desktop program is the two main
components of the pet feeder. They also incorporated the RFID recognition, that involves
identifying and tracking objects using radio frequency identification technology. It used RFID
tags that contains electronically stored information that can be read by RFID readers. With the
real-time clock that keeps track of current time with high accuracy, and a light sensor that
recognizes different times of day, you can ensure that your pet will be fed on scheduled time.
To add, Kaitlyn Mclnnis and Kaitlyn Wells, focuses their study in securing a consistent
feeding amount and establishing specific feeding times for the pets to prevent and aid pets from
overfeeding and underfeeding. In this research, the main goal is to help the pet owners in taking
care of their pets using automatic pet food feeder. To feed the animals with the right amount of
food they need without the presence of the owners to would bring convenience to both the pets
and the owner especially to those with busy schedule at work. Overall, this pet feeder design not
only enhances the well-being of pets by ensuring proper nutrition but also simplifies the feeding
routine for owners, making it a valuable addition to any pet owner's household.

2.1.5. Sensor-lacking feeders dispense programmed meals regardless of

leftovers.

As mentioned in M.K Razali et.al, (2021), automatic pet feeders generally

lack sensors and will continue dispensing preprogrammed meals even if there is
leftover, uneaten food. This is because most basic automatic pet feeders operate
on a redetermined schedule and portion size, without the capability to sense or
detect whether the pet has consumed all the food from the previous meal.

2.1.6. No ability to monitor may result in usurping each other’s meal.

It is also stated in M.K Razali et.al, (2021),when multiple pets are sharing
the feeding area and may usurp one another's meals, automatic pet feeders
typically do not offer a way to monitor which pet is eating which meal. This lack
of individualized monitoring can pose challenges in ensuring that each pet
receives the appropriate amount of food and prevents one pet from consuming
another's portion. By carefully considering

these cost factors, pet owners can make informed decisions when selecting an
automatic pet feeder that offers the best value for their budget while meeting their
pet's dietary requirements and lifestyle.

2.1.7. Feeder stops if batteries die or power is lost, causing missed meals.

Based in M.K Razali et.al, (2021) study , this highlights a significant

drawback of automatic pet feeders, which is their dependency on power sources
such as batteries or electricity. If the batteries wear down there is a power outage,
the feeder will be unable to dispense food as scheduled. This or can lead to missed
meals for pets and disrupt their feeding routine, potentially causing discomfort or
anxiety. To mitigate this issue, some automatic pet feeders may include backup
power options, such as the ability to connect to an external power source or use
rechargeable batteries. This ensures that the feeder can continue operating even
during power outages or when the primary power source is unavailable.

As stated in Encik A.et.al (2022), there are various types of pet feeders
available on the market today, designed to ensure that pets have access to a
healthy amount of food throughout the day, even when their owners are not at
home. One common type of pet feeder is the gravity feeder . It consists of a
hopper filled with food, which falls into a bowl as the pet empties the bowl. While
they do not control portion sizes or access to food, they allow pets to have
continuous access to food and prevent it from going stale.

2.2.2. Automated pet feeder controlled by wireless device with ultrasonic

sensor.

In accordance with the study Encik A.et.al (2022), of In the context of an

automated pet feeder, the wireless device acts as a control panel that allows the

2.8. Synthesis

The development and use of automated pet feeders to streamline and enhance the process
of feeding pets, particularly in scenarios where owners are away from home for extended
periods. These feeders utilize various technologies such as microcontrollers (e.g., ATmega32),
servo motors, sensors (e.g., ultrasonic sensors), and Arduino platforms to automate the feeding
process based on preset schedules and portion sizes.

Key features and objectives of automated pet feeders include:

Convenience for pet owners: Automated feeders eliminate the need for manual feeding,
allowing pet owners to set schedules for their pets' meals, even when they are not at home.

Proper diet management: By controlling portion sizes and establishing feeding schedules,
automated feeders assist in managing pets' weight and ensuring they receive appropriate
nutrition.

Reliable feeding schedule: Automated feeders ensure that pets receive meals at consistent
intervals, even in the absence of their owners, promoting healthy eating habits.

Hygiene maintenance: Some automated feeders incorporate features such as salt

dispensers and sensors to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the feeding process.

However, there are limitations and considerations associated with automated pet feeders,
including:

Lack of individualized monitoring: Basic automated feeders may not have sensors to
detect uneaten food or monitor which pet is consuming the meal, potentially leading to
overfeeding or underfeeding in multi-pet households.

Dependency on power sources: Automated feeders rely on batteries or electricity for

operation, which can lead to missed meals and disruptions in feeding routines during power
outages or battery depletion.

Research and development in this field aim to address these limitations and improve the
functionality and reliability of automated pet feeders. Studies explore advanced features such as
digital image processing to identify pets and dispense appropriate food types, as well as
communication systems to provide real-time updates to pet owners regarding feeding activities.

Automated pet feeders offer a convenient and effective solution for pet owners to ensure
their pets are fed properly, even when they are not physically present, while ongoing research
aims to enhance their capabilities and address existing limitations. Overall, the purpose of this
paper is to evaluate the viewpoint of the owners with the Automatic feeding system, to what
convenience, effect, and changes it will bring to them and to their pets.
