Unit IG2: Risk Assessment
Guidelines & Electronic Submission Instructions
Students are asked to use these guidelines along with the latest version of the document ‘Unit
IG2: Risk Assessment Guidance and Information for Learners and Learning Partners’.
Learning Outcome
Do a general risk assessment in your workplace, profiling and prioritising risks, inspecting
the workplace, recognising a range of common hazards, evaluating risks and (taking
account of current controls), recommending further control measures and planning actions.
Assessment Criteria
Produce a risk assessment of a workplace which considers a wide range of identified
hazards (drawn from elements 5-11 of the IG syllabus) and meets best practice standards
‘suitable and sufficient’.
Introduction
The aim of this assessment is for you to practically apply the knowledge and understanding
that you have gained from your studies.
Before you start the assessment, you must have completed your studies of the whole of the
IG syllabus (elements 1 to 11).
You will need to complete a risk assessment of your workplace.
Your risk assessment should be about identifying sensible and proportionate measures to
control the risks in your workplace. Your risk assessment should be realistic and the level of
detail should be proportionate to the level of risk in your organisation.
You can refer to the risk assessment guidance, examples and frequently asked questions
(FAQs) on the HSE website http://www.hse.gov.uk/risk/controlling-risks.htm AND the
completed example provided by NEBOSH (see website or course material from ATC).

Conducting the Risk Assessment
Students can request formal letters from Automation Technology College (ATC), to be
submitted to the respective students’ companies where applicable indicating that the student
is pursuing the course of study with ATC and that they are required to conduct a practical
application as part of their study. ATC will kindly request that assistance be afforded to the
student to meet the course mandates.
For students that are not working, other arrangements can be made by ATC lecturers to
have the student accommodated along with existing employed students where possible.
Where not possible, a formal request can be made to the Principal of ATC, seeking
permission to use the College’s premises for the practical application.
Note: Lecturers will not accompany the student to the company or participate in any way in
the practical application. The practical applications will be undertaken independently by the
students and unaided by the lecturer. When the student has completed the practical, it will
be submitted according to course mandates for marking purposes.
IMPORTANT: pre-marking of assessments prior to submission to NEBOSH is NOT
allowed. Do not submit drafts of your work to your tutor as they are not allowed to pre-
mark or comment on specific details.
