Answer all questions

Part-A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Find the induced emf in a conductor of length 150cm moving at an angle of 30ᵒ to the direction
of a uniform magnetic field of flux density 1.3 Wb/m2 with a velocity of 60m/s.
[2] [CO01] [BTL3]
2. Calculate the induced EMF in the armature winding of a 4 pole, lap wound DC machine having
728 active conductors and running at 1800 rpm. The flux per pole is 30 mWb.[2] [CO01] [BTL3]
3. A shunt generator has an induced voltage of 254V. When the machine is loaded, the terminal
voltage drops down to 240V. Neglecting armature reaction, determine the load current if the

armature resistance is 0.04Ω and the field resistance is 24Ω. [2] [CO02] [BTL3]

4. A DC machine runs at 1500rpm and develops a voltage of 250V on an open circuit. Find the
mechanical power and torque developed by the machine for an armature current of 50A.
[2] [CO02] [BTL3]
5. Why is the shunt generator characteristic of load dropping and turning back as it is overloaded?
[2] [CO02] [BTL2]
6. Compare the features of a three-point and four-point starter in DC motors. [2] [CO01] [BTL2]

7. A DC shunt motor runs at 250rpm on a 220V supply and takes a current 200A. Calculate the
speed of the machine when taking an armature current of 100A and adding additional resistance
to the field to bring the flux to 80% of its previous value. Take armature resistance as 0.12Ω.
[2] [CO03] [BTL3]
8. A 4 pole, 220V, shunt motor has 540 lap wound conductors. It takes 32A from the supply mains
and develops output power of 5.595kW. The field winding takes 1A. The armature resistance is
0.9Ω and the flux per pole is 30mWb. Calculate (i) speed (ii) torque developed.
[2] [CO02] [BTL4]
9. A 250V compound motor is subjected to Swinburne’s test. The machine takes 9A from lines and
the field current of 5A. The resistances of series field and armature windings are 0.07Ω and
0.1Ω, respectively. Also, the brush drop is 2V. Find the constant losses of the machine.
[2] [CO02] [BTL4]
10. Draw the operating characteristics of cumulative compound DC motors. Bring out their
significance. [2] [CO02] [BTL2]

Part-B (6 x 5 = 30 Marks)

11. A magnetic circuit of a single coil stator and an oval-shaped rotor . The inductance varies with
the angular position due to unequal airgap as L(θ) = L0+ L2Cos2θ. If L0= 10mH and L2= 2.5mH,
find the torque experienced by the rotor. [5] [CO01] [BTL2]
12. With the required diagrams and explanations, the expression for the cross-magnetizing and
demagnetizing ampere-turns per pole in the DC generator is derived. Also illustrates the need
for compensating windings. [5] [CO02][BTL2]
13. A 500V, 250kW, long shunt compound generator induces an emf of 480V when run at 1000 rpm
on no-load. On full load, the speed of the machine drops to 975 rpm, the flux increases by 15%,
and the terminal voltage rises to 500V. If the series and shunt field resistance are 0.02Ω and
100Ω, respectively, calculate the armature resistance. Assume a voltage drop of 1 V per brush.
[5] [CO02] [BTL4]
14. State the need for the starter in a DC motor. With a neat sketch, explain the starter used for a DC
series motor. [5] [CO01] [BTL2]
15. A 4 pole, 230V DC shunt motor takes 36A for delivering 10HP power output. Find the motor
current when the machine delivers 5HP. Take Rsh=300Ω and Ra=0.1Ω. [5] [CO03] [BTL3]
