INSTRUCTIONS:
 The paper contains four items.
 Attempt all the items.
Section A
Part I: Soil science and value addition
Item 1
Mr. Omoding is a farmer in Kachumbala, he has two acres of land that he is using for farming.
The land has been fertile and he has been harvesting highly from this land, he has always had
enough food for his family consumption and enough food for sale. Of recent, his crop yields
have drastically reduced, the crops have started to develop yellow leaves, stunted growth,
shallow roots, chlorosis, leaves falling off the plants prematurely. Mr. Omoding is confused of
what is happening to his garden.

Task
1. As a student of agriculture, write a message to Omoding explaining what is happening.
2. Write a message advising Omoding on what to do.

Section B
Part II: Animal production
Item 2
Poultry raring is gaining popularity in Uganda. Poultry provides white meat and eggs highly
demanded on the local and international market making it a profitable venture worthy investing
in. farmers that invest in poultry usually find challenges with chicks with in the first four weeks
after hatching (before chicks developing furthers) at this stage mortality is high leading to losses
by the farmers. Extension workers say this stage is not difficult as long as the famers know what
to do right.
Task
As an extension worker in Uganda, write a guide line you will use to train farmers on how to
manage chicks at the stage mentioned in the scenario above.
Crop production
Item 3
The s.2 has been actively involved in garden work at the school farm where each student owns a
plot measuring two meters wide and six meters long for corm growing. After the fast seasons
rains began, many students planted their crops except for Panda who had not prepared her plot in
time. Masavu planted maize with a spacing of 30 cm X 90 cm on time, but most of the seeds did
not germinate, so he took care of the few that did. Kabaga’s plot of groundnuts initially did well
but was soon invaded by weeds for she couldn’t remove due to a busy class schedule. After a
month of rain, drought set in and scotched many of the plants. Upon close observations, the
remaining plants in many plots had turned yellow even though their plots were weed free.
The maize stems and leaves had holes bored by some organisms, the carrots had tubers exposed
to sunlight, and the tomatoes had developed more branches than necessary.
Task
Evaluate the gardening efforts of the students and provide them with guidance on measures to
ensure successful crop production.

Item 4
Mr. Moses is a maize farmer in Hoima, he joined this business in 2010 with crop farming having
his life changed for the better from the income he will be farming from maize growing. This has
not been realised due to inadequate knowledge in the way he handles planting materials from the
previous season which is usually local variety. He does not consider the size, color, parent plant,
pest damage and many other physical damages.
At planting, very few of them germinate leading to heavy losses. Moses has thought of leaving
the business.
Task
Based on the above scenario, write a massage to Mr. Moses advising him on what to do.
