LESSON 7: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Nature of Quantitative Research Problem
Sparked by your curiosity or interest, you get to ponder on a problem needing answers. You
resort to thinking of what to solve, whom to ask, where to go and how to do all the things you want to
happen to find answer to the problem. Behaving this way, you are then confronted with a research
problem. A research problem is something that nurtures in your mind a difficulty or uncertainty,
enough to push you to do an empirical investigation whereby you search for answers to a problem by
collecting and analysing data or information through which you can find the right answer or solution.
Requiring you to adopt an empirical attitude toward your problem in a way that you depend
on your sensory experience, conduct experimentation, or perform a scientific method in arriving at the
truth about something makes your problem a RESEARCHABLE PROBLEM. Being
RESEARCHABLE, your research problem becomes a QUANTITATIVE PROBLEM, not a
qualitative research problem that people consider not researchable because it is more inclined to
explaining or describing people’s views, values, attitudes, opinions and other subjective traits.
Sources of Quantitative Research Problem
1. Agencies of the government, or any non-governmental institutions
2. Your own experience or genuine interest in something
3. Previous research findings which you want to validate or consider as studies suffereing
from some inconsistencies or discrepancies
4. Present political social or economic issues in society
5. Review of related literature
Types of Quantitative Research Questions
1. Descriptive-ask questions on the kind, qualifications and categories of the subjects or
participants
2. Relation- are questions about the nature and manner of connection between or among
variables
3. Causal-reasons behind the effects of the independent variable on the dependent variable
Approaches to Quantitative Research Questions
1. Deductive-goes from bigger ideas such as theories or concepts to smaller ideas
2. Inductive- starts from smaller and simpler ideas to bigger or more complex ideas
Research Questions / Statement of the Problem:
There are two problems to be stated:
(1) the major (general or main) problem, and (2) the minor (specific) problems or sub-problems.
The general problem consists of the general purpose of the study which is usually patterned from
the research title. The general problem is then broken down to specific problems or sub-problems
in order to be researchable units. Usually, the general problem starts with the phrase: “This
study” while the sub-problems start with: “Specifically, this study”.
The following are the guidelines in using the sub-problems of the study:
1. It is arranged in a logical order from factual to analytical order following the flow in the research
paradigm.
2. It should be specifically, correctly, and grammatically worded in the language of research.
3. It should not duplicate or overlap the other sub-problems (mutually exclusive dimensions).
4. It is not answerable by yes or no.
5. Each specific problem has a corresponding statistical tool.
Characteristics of Good Research Questions:
1. Feasible – Consider the amount of time, energy, money, respondents and even your
current situation as a student-researcher. Is the research problem possible?
Considering the resources, it is more possible to gather data needed to answer
question.
2. Clear- The clarity of how the questions are stated lead to agreement of meaning of the
readers of your study.
3. Significant- Ask if your research questions are relevant or important to ask.
4. Ethical- Always consider the welfare of people, animals or whosoever are involved in
your study. Look into ways of answering the research questions without inflicting
physical and psychological harm to persons involved.
EXAMPLE:
This study attempts to evaluate the status and extent of implementation of the Computer Education
Program in the Division of Zamboanga del Norte SY 2019-2020 as perceived by teacher and student
respondents. Specifically, this seeks to answer to the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:
1.1 Teacher-respondents
1.1.1 sex
1.1.2 field of specialization
1.1.3 length of service; and
1.1.4 computer education seminar/training attended?
1.2 Student-respondents
1.2.1 sex
1.2.2 monthly family income
1.2.3 accessibility to computer; and
1.2.4 performance in English and Mathematics?
2. What is the extent of the Computer Education Program implementation as perceived by the teacher-
respondents with respect to:
1.1 objectives and content of instruction;
1.2 teaching competencies;
1.3 learning competencies;
3. What is the extent of the Computer Education Program implementation as perceived by the student-
respondents with respect to:
a. objectives and content of instruction;
b. teaching competencies;
c. learning competencies
Learning Competencies/MELCs:
States research questions CS_RS12-Id-e-4
Presents written statement of the problem CS_RS12-Id-E-7
ACTIVITY 1: Check the column that speaks of the quality of the given quantitative research
problem. Accomplish the last column, too. (15 Items -2 Points Each)
Quantitative Research Problem Researchable Non- Comments, reasons, reactions
Researchable
1. What are the viewers’ thoughts
and feelings about the ending
of the movie?
2. What percentage of the movie
viewers find the ending tragic?
3. How many find the movie
unrealistic?
4. Does the movie reflect
Philippine culture?
5. What fractional number
represents the extent of the
movie’s projection of Filipino
culture?
6. In the director’s attempt to
explain the cultural impact of
the movie, what reasons did he
give?
7. What kind of reasons or causes
did he give to clarify the
viewers’ questions on
Philippine culture in relation to
the movie?
ACTIVITY 2: Write one general research question and two specific research questions for the
given research problem below: (15 points)
